With its 22 kg weight and high-capacity toroidal transformer, the AT-3000 stands out from entry-level and mid-range integrated amplifiers. Tonewinner, a Chinese manufacturer that has been active for over thirty years in both professional and consumer audio markets, offers here a device that combines multichannel amplification and audio-video processing in a single chassis. The unit supports Dolby Atmos, Dolby TrueHD, DTS:X and their earlier variants, as well as 4K HDR video.

A generous amplification section for the three front channels

The power distribution chosen by Tonewinner favors the left, center, and right channels, which each receive 240 W RMS into 8 ohms. The eight other channels (surrounds and heights) provide 120 W each. This distribution reaches a total power of 1680 W into 8 ohms. This choice is no accident: in an Atmos setup, the three front speakers carry most of the dramatic content and dialogue, while the surround and height channels work more as reinforcement.

The toroidal transformer used occupies a significant portion of the internal volume. Tonewinner highlights its output stability and resistance to interference. The amplification runs in Class A/B, a typical compromise for multichannel devices where thermal efficiency matters as much as sound quality.

Signal processing: proven components

The audio processing is based on two Cirrus Logic CS42528 chips, which act as DAC, ADC, and S/PDIF receiver. These 24-bit / 192 kHz converters offer a dynamic range of 114 dB and a THD+N distortion rate of -100 dB according to the component manufacturer’s specifications. For surround format decoding, the unit uses an Analog Devices ADSP-21573 SHARC floating-point DSP. This processor handles Dolby Atmos and DTS:X decoding with careful channel separation.

The video section relies on a Panasonic MN864788 controller, compatible with 4K/60 Hz and RGB 4:4:4 / YUV 4:4:4 color spaces. The AT-3000 supports HDR10, HDR10+, Dolby Vision, Dolby Vision IQ, and HLG, covering virtually all current broadcast formats.

Configurations up to 9.3.4 or 7.3.6

The AT-3000 offers 14 independent decoding channels and three subwoofer outputs, allowing 9.3.4 or 7.3.6 configurations. Each subwoofer has its own volume control. This ability to manage three subwoofers separately will interest those who work on their room’s low-frequency response, as each subwoofer can be placed and adjusted to smooth room modes.

The eleven amplified channels cover 7.1.4 or 5.1.6 configurations without an external amplifier. To go further, the unit provides 14 RCA pre-amplified outputs that allow it to be paired with one or more power amps. The three subwoofer outputs are on XLR, an uncommon choice in this category that makes connections easier to professional or semi-professional subwoofers.

The Easy Test EQ calibration system

The EasyTest EQ (ETQ) system is developed in-house by Tonewinner engineers. The ETM-2 measurement microphone, sold separately, captures sound information from each speaker and applies automatic channel-by-channel equalization based on the listening position.

The interface offers two modes: “Automatic Acoustic Test” and “Professional Acoustic Test.” The first follows a standard guided procedure. The second allows channel-by-channel intervention, with multi-band adjustments and graphical display of curves before and after correction. Five equalization modes are available: Cinema, Music, Karaoke, Auto EQ, and Direct (no processing).

The absence of third-party systems such as Dirac or Audyssey means relying on in-house algorithms. The ability to manually adjust each frequency band partially offsets this limitation for those willing to devote time to it.

Connectivity and additional features

The front panel includes a microphone input with volume knob, designed for karaoke use. An integrated DSP processor manages reverb, echo, and feedback suppression over nine levels. This dual-purpose orientation (cinema and karaoke) reflects habits in the Asian market, where Tonewinner makes most of its sales.

On the rear, six HDMI 2.0 inputs (HDCP 2.2) and two HDMI outputs with eARC cover the needs of a complete setup. The screw speaker terminals accommodate eleven pairs of cables. The unit also offers four RCA analog inputs, two optical inputs, two coaxial inputs, a USB-A port, and a micro SD card reader for local audio file playback (FLAC, APE, WAV, MP3).

Bluetooth connectivity enables streaming from a smartphone, and a mobile app (iOS/Android) offers remote control. Spotify, Apple Music, and Pandora services are supported via the app. The RS232 port and trigger output allow integration into a home automation system.

HDMI 2.0: a limitation to be aware of

The AT-3000 is equipped with HDMI 2.0 inputs and outputs, not 2.1. For watching movies and series in 4K/60 Hz with HDR, this version is more than sufficient. However, next-generation console gamers (PS5, Xbox Series X) who want 4K/120 Hz or VRR functions will need to connect their console directly to the TV and use the eARC audio return. This is not a design flaw but a positioning choice: HDMI 2.1 devices remain significantly more expensive.

Use as a preamplifier

The 14 pre-amplified outputs allow the AT-3000 to be used as a processor only, with amplification handled by external power amps. This configuration will appeal to those who already own power amplifiers or who want to gradually evolve towards a system with greater power reserves. The stated signal-to-noise ratio (≥ 95 dB) remains below high-end processors, but is suitable for most home setups.
