The Ortofon 2M Red cartridge is a moving magnet (MM) model equipped with an elliptical stylus. It incorporates the Split Pole Pins technology developed by Ortofon. Its output level is 5.5 mV and its frequency response is engineered to be linear. This model is the entry point of the 2M series.
The 2M Red cartridge integrates the proprietary “Split Pole Pins” technology, an exclusive Ortofon innovation that has distinguished this series since its launch. This specific architecture, inherited from the earlier 500 and OM series, consists of four independent pole pins, each with its own copper winding. This configuration significantly minimizes eddy currents, a parasitic phenomenon that typically affects moving magnet cartridges at high frequencies.
The magnetic generator uses a split magnet, a technical approach with measurable advantages. On the one hand, this design ensures a remarkably flat frequency response between 20 Hz and 22 kHz, with variation contained between +3 and -1 dB over the 20 Hz – 20 kHz range. On the other hand, this optimized magnetic architecture generates a high output voltage of 5.5 mV at 1 kHz for 5 cm/sec, greatly simplifying pairing with any RIAA phono preamplifier without requiring an additional gain stage.
The aluminum cantilever supports an elliptical diamond whose precise dimensions (r/R radius of 8/18 μm) have been calculated to optimize contact with the groove walls. This elliptical geometry, slimmer at the edges than a spherical diamond, increases the effective contact area with the record groove, enabling better tracking of high-frequency modulations while reducing the local pressure exerted on the vinyl.
The 2M Red’s body stands out with its bright red finish that sharply contrasts with the sector’s aesthetic conventions. This distinctive color not only allows immediate identification within the 2M range—where each model sports its own hue—but also facilitates precise alignment of the cartridge on the headshell.
This singular aesthetic results from a collaboration with the Danish design firm Møller Jensen Innovation & Design, led by Jens Møller-Jensen, a historic figure in Scandinavian industrial design since 1965. The same studio designed Ortofon’s MC Kontrapunkt and MC Jubilee cartridges, establishing visual continuity across the manufacturer’s different ranges. The faceted, raw-diamond-inspired body shape is not merely ornamental: it contributes to overall rigidity while dispersing unwanted resonances.
At 7.2 grams, the 2M Red fits the majority of tonearms on the market without requiring additional counterweights. Integrated captive nuts greatly simplify installation, turning an often delicate operation into a procedure accessible even to beginners. The standard 12.5 mm screw spacing ensures universal compatibility with 1/2 inch headshells.
The 2M Red offers carefully balanced operating parameters. The recommended tracking force of 1.8 grams (with an operating range of 1.6 to 2.0 g) represents an optimal compromise between tracking quality and record preservation. This relatively low value for an MM cartridge attests to the quality of the suspension and the balance of the moving mass.
The lateral dynamic compliance of 20 μm/mN places the 2M Red in the medium-to-high compliance category, making it particularly suitable for low to medium mass tonearms. This characteristic ensures excellent tracking ability, with a 70 μm trackability at 315 Hz under nominal tracking force, guaranteeing stable playback even on highly modulated passages.
The 20° vertical tracking angle corresponds to the modern standard, ensuring optimal compatibility with the majority of contemporary pressings. Channel separation, measured at 22 dB at 1 kHz and maintained at 15 dB at 15 kHz, is respectable for a cartridge in this price range, delivering a well-defined stereophonic image without being exceptional.
The electrical characteristics reflect a careful design: the internal impedance of 1.3 kΩ and the inductance of 700 mH remain within standard values for an MM cartridge, while the recommended load of 47 kΩ with a capacitance of 150 to 300 pF matches the input values of most phono preamplifiers.
One of the 2M Red’s key strengths is its upgrade potential within the 2M range. Since the cartridge body is identical for the Red and Blue models, the user can simply replace the stylus with that of a 2M Blue to benefit from a nude elliptical diamond offering better definition and an optimized suspension. This modularity allows for a gradual upgrade without requiring a complete cartridge replacement.
Compatibility also extends to the stylus of the 2M Silver, an OEM model developed specifically for certain manufacturers, which combines the Red’s elliptical diamond with silver-plated copper coils similar to those of the Bronze and Black models, but with a reduced number of turns. This unique flexibility in the segment makes it possible to precisely tailor the cartridge’s performance to system upgrades or listening preferences.
It should be noted that stylus interchangeability follows a precise logic: the Red, Blue, and Silver models share the same generator configuration with copper coils, while the Bronze and Black use silver-plated coils in a Lexan DMX body. This modular architecture reflects a coherent industrial approach that streamlines production while offering true progression in the upgrade path.
Ortofon states a lifespan of up to 1000 listening hours without notable performance degradation, provided proper maintenance is carried out. The diamond continues to function beyond that but begins to show signs of wear. Regular cleaning with a fine antistatic brush, always from back to front, and using a fiber record brush before each listening session significantly extends this lifespan.
The cartridge fits all standard 1/2 inch headshells with a 12.5 mm screw spacing. For Rega turntables and other low-profile models without VTA adjustment, Ortofon offers the 2MR Red variant with a body 3 mm lower. The 2M Red Verso version exists for bottom-mount installations, and the 2M Red PNP comes pre-mounted on a universal headshell for S-shaped tonearms.
Upgrading from the Red to the Blue is done by simply swapping the stylus, without touching the cartridge body or the setup. This operation takes a few seconds and immediately delivers the benefits of the Blue’s nude elliptical diamond: better definition, superior tracking (80 μm versus 70 μm), and an extended frequency response up to 25 kHz.
Beyond the 1.8 g tracking force, the phono preamp’s capacitive load influences the sound. A value between 150 and 300 pF is recommended, with 200 pF often being the best compromise. Baerwald alignment works perfectly, though Löfgren or Stevenson can be used according to preference. The azimuth angle should be checked to ensure symmetrical reading of both groove walls.
In its price range, the 2M Red stands out for its high output voltage, unique modularity, and Danish build quality. Its sonic signature prioritizes transparency and precision over warmth, with a bright top end that can seem analytical on some systems. This characteristic makes it a relevant choice for turntables with a naturally warm presentation.

Alexandros
Very good cartridge with sweet and clean sound.
And the company itself is very proper in execution and fast shipping, combined with the good price.
I will definitely buy again.

Easy to install. Improved sound compared to the original cartridge, also an Ortofon, from the Pro-ject turntable. Depth and volume gain in amplitude. The cartridge gets the job done.
Pros: Very good cartridge. Deep and ample sound.
Cons: None.
