SSC Liftpoint 1.6: adjustable solid aluminium isolation foot

A turntable that tilts by a few millimetres on a shelf, an amplifier sitting on a cabinet that resonates with the bass: these issues can be corrected at the feet. This aluminium cylinder machined by German manufacturer SSC combines two functions: levelling through height adjustment and vibration isolation through the woven suspension that established the brand’s reputation.

A woven suspension beneath the aluminium

SSC stands for String Suspension Concept, a suspension principle based on a network of tensioned threads. Beneath each Liftpoint is a woven element, the same as on the Netpoint series feet, sandwiched between the aluminium body and the supporting surface. This weave works in both directions. It reduces vibrations from the cabinet or floor that would travel up to the equipment, and dampens those generated by the equipment itself, such as the hum of a transformer or a turntable motor. The aim is to achieve a more composed sound, more precise stereo imaging and a deeper soundstage, free from coloration introduced by the support.

The body is machined from a solid block of aluminium, measuring 51 mm in diameter and weighing 143 g. This mass and the rigidity of the metal prevent the foot from adding its own resonances to those it is intended to eliminate. The Liftpoint 1.6 is available only in a silver finish.

Stepless height adjustment over approximately 7 mm

The Liftpoint 1.6 measures 16 mm in height at its lowest setting. Its threaded body unscrews smoothly to add up to approximately 7 mm, with no notches or steps, allowing each foot to be adjusted to within a tenth of a millimetre. A slightly warped shelf, a cabinet top that is not perfectly flat or an uneven floor can be compensated for foot by foot, without shims or washers.

This adjustment matters a great deal for a turntable: a platter that is not horizontal causes the stylus to bear more heavily on one side of the groove than the other, unbalancing the two channels and wearing the record unevenly. On a bookshelf speaker placed on a shelf, it eliminates the slight rocking that causes the enclosure to vibrate. The low height of the 1.6 also allows equipment to fit into hi-fi cabinets where space between shelves is limited.

Placed beneath the equipment or screwed in place of the original feet

Two threaded adapters, M6 and M8, are supplied with the Liftpoint. If the equipment has threaded inserts, the foot screws directly into them in place of the original feet and stays firmly in place. Otherwise, it simply slips beneath the chassis.

Each foot supports 15 kg, and the Liftpoint is sold individually: three feet support up to 45 kg, four up to 60 kg. The choice between three and four support points is yours. Three points always define a plane, so equipment on three feet never rocks, even on an imperfect surface. Four feet distribute the load more evenly beneath wide or heavy equipment, provided each is carefully adjusted so that none is left off the surface.

Liftpoint 1.6 or 3.5: cabinet or floor

SSC offers the Liftpoint in two heights, with the same diameter and load capacity per foot. The 1.6 is the model intended for equipment installed in a hi-fi cabinet or on a shelf: turntables, CD players and transports, amplifiers, bookshelf speakers. The Liftpoint 3.5, 35 mm high and adjustable over approximately ten millimetres, takes over on the floor, beneath a subwoofer, a floorstanding speaker or a power amplifier placed on the floor, where differences in level are greater.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should the device's original feet be removed?

Not necessarily. The Liftpoint must be positioned under a flat part of the chassis, and the original feet must no longer touch the supporting surface once the device is in place. If these feet exceed the Liftpoint’s 16 to 23 mm height, they must be removed if they are screwed in, then the M6 or M8 adapter used in the freed insert.

How should the feet be positioned under a device whose weight is not centered?

In an amplifier, the transformer often concentrates most of the weight on one side. It is best to position one or two feet closer to this area and check that the actual load supported by each remains below 15 kg. With three feet, placing the single foot on the lighter side generally balances the unit.

How do you level a turntable on Liftpoint?

A small spirit level placed in the centre of the platter is sufficient. First adjust the front-to-back axis, then the left-to-right axis, turning just one foot at a time in small fractions of a turn. Checking the platter in two positions, a quarter-turn apart, confirms the result.

Can Liftpoint 1.6 be placed under a floorstanding speaker?

It’s possible if the speaker’s weight remains within the load limits, but SSC reserves the Liftpoint 3.5 for this use. Taller and with a longer adjustment range, it better compensates for unevenness in a floor, which is more pronounced than on a shelf.

How do I know if my device accepts M6 or M8 threads?

The diameter of the threaded insert gives it directly: 6 mm for M6, 8 mm for M8. The device or speaker manual often provides this information. If there is no insert, the Liftpoint is simply placed underneath, without an adapter.

How do I maintain the Liftpoint?

A dry microfibre cloth is sufficient for the aluminium. Abrasive products or solvents should be avoided, and the woven element beneath the foot must not be wetted or greased, as this could alter its flexibility.
