The closed-back, circumaural design (fully surrounding the ear) ensures good sound isolation, ideal for listening in noisy environments. The ear pads and headband are covered with protein-based synthetic leather, which is lighter than genuine leather and offers remarkable comfort even during long listening sessions.

Weighing approximately 375 grams (without the cable), the TH-610 remains relatively lightweight for headphones in this category. The build quality is exemplary, with minimal use of plastic in its construction, showcasing Fostex’s Japanese craftsmanship.

At the heart of the Fostex TH-610 are 50 mm dynamic drivers with bio-dynamic diaphragms, paired with neodymium magnets generating a 1 Tesla magnetic field. This technical configuration enables highly precise sound reproduction.

The TH-610 is characterized by a slightly warm sound signature, with powerful and well-defined bass, particularly impressive in the sub-bass range, offering what some audiophiles describe as a “royal rumble.” The mids are clear though slightly recessed, while the highs are detailed and precise.

The soundstage is particularly remarkable for closed-back headphones, with excellent depth and width that allow for precise instrumental separation. This quality is rare in closed-back designs. The gold-plated 6.35 mm jack is standard for this type of audiophile equipment but will require an adapter for use with sources equipped with 3.5 mm jacks.

The TH-610 brings several notable improvements over its predecessor, the TH-600. The most obvious difference lies in the ear cups, which transition from magnesium to matte black walnut. This change is not merely aesthetic: the wood contributes to a more natural and realistic sound reproduction.

Compared to the high-end TH-900 mk2 model, the TH-610 represents a more affordable alternative. The TH-900 mk2 stands out with its Japanese cherry wood ear cups lacquered using the traditional “Urushi” technique, while the TH-610 uses matte black walnut. In terms of sound, the TH-900 mk2 offers slightly higher sensitivity (100 dB vs. 98 dB) and even more refined sound performance, but at a significantly higher price.
