Optimized design

To achieve such quality while delivering the best power in its class, each section of the amplifier had to be optimized for its task, just as it would have been with a separate preamplifier and monoblock amplifiers.

Generally, amplifiers use a single transformer, with distinct power supply regulation for the preamplification and amplification sections; the PM-10 goes much further.

Purely analog

Another important element in noise reduction is the fact that the PM-10 is a purely analog amplifier: many competing designs nowadays include digital-to-analog conversion or adopt digital amplification and volume control, but Marantz keeps things as clean and simple as possible with its highly refined all-analog design.

Why? Well, although it may seem convenient to have a DAC in the amplifier, digital circuits are inherently very noisy (in the electrical sense) and can therefore interfere with the delicate analog signals passing through the amplifier. That’s why Marantz has chosen to design the Premium Series without any digital/analog conversion in its SA-CD/CD players or network players so that its amplifiers remain as pure and clean as possible.

Better still, to make the most of this purity of design, the PM-10 has been designed with the option of operating in “Maximum Purity Mode”: when activated, it disables all superfluous circuits so that the signal benefits from the cleanest path through the amplifier. There is also a Direct Amplifier input that allows the signal to pass directly from the input section to the amplification stage to allow the unit to function as a pure amplifier.
