Second model in the 500 series, the VM520EB embodies Audio-Technica’s Japanese expertise in phono cartridge design. This moving magnet model uses VM (Vector Aligned Dual Magnet) technology, developed by the manufacturer since its beginnings, and combines it with an elliptical diamond stylus to deliver precise groove tracking. A cartridge designed as part of a range intended to evolve thanks to interchangeable styli.
The VM520EB is based on a dual moving magnet generator, a configuration specific to Audio-Technica. The two magnets are arranged in a V shape at 90°, mirroring the geometry of the cutting heads used to create vinyl masters. This arrangement allows each magnet to independently capture the information of the left and right channels engraved in the groove walls.
The generator coils use a paratoroidal architecture: two coils per channel, stacked one behind the other. This construction improves electromagnetic efficiency and contributes to better channel separation. Audio-Technica specifies 27 dB of separation at 1 kHz, a figure that translates into a well-defined stereophonic image. Between the two generators, a central shielding plate reduces electrical crosstalk between the left and right channels.
The winding uses 6N OFC copper (99.9999% purity), a choice that promotes signal transmission with minimal losses. Coil impedance is 2,700 Ω, a classic value that ensures compatibility with the vast majority of MM phono preamplifiers.
The VM520EB is fitted with an elliptical diamond stylus with dimensions of 0.3 × 0.7 mil (i.e. 7.6 × 17.8 µm. This geometry offers a larger contact area with the groove than a conical stylus, enabling more refined reading of the modulations cut into the vinyl. High-frequency tracking becomes more precise and harmonic distortion is reduced, especially at the inner grooves where geometric constraints are strongest.
The diamond is of the bonded type: the diamond tip is attached to a metal shank, which is itself inserted into the cantilever. This construction, less expensive than a nude diamond, adds a slightly higher mass at the end of the stylus arm. The cantilever itself is an aluminum tube, a rigid and lightweight material that transmits mechanical vibrations to the generator.
The recommended tracking force is between 1.8 and 2.2 grams, with a nominal value of 2 grams. The vertical tracking angle (VTA) is set at 23°, corresponding to the cutting standard for modern records.
The cartridge body is molded from a low-resonance polymer. This material choice limits unwanted vibrations that could color the sound reproduction. The cartridge weighs 6.4 grams, making it compatible with most tonearms on the market.
Mounting is via the standard half-inch (12.7 mm spacing), the most common on turntables equipped with a removable headshell. The VM520EB comes with the necessary mounting hardware: four screws of different lengths (5 and 10 mm), two washers, and two hex nuts. A non-magnetic screwdriver and a set of lead wires complete the kit. The only drawback: the threaded inserts found on the newer VMx versions are not included on this model, so mounting requires the use of nuts.
A flip-down stylus guard is integrated into the cartridge, providing protection during handling. It can be easily raised with a finger before playback.
One of the strengths of the VM system lies in stylus compatibility across the range. The VM520EB body can accommodate all styli in the 500 series: the VMN10CB (conical), VMN30EN (nude elliptical), or VMN40ML (MicroLine). It is even possible to fit styli from the 700 series, VMN50SH (Shibata) or VMN60SLC (Special Line Contact), for those who want to push performance further without changing the cartridge body.
This modularity means the VM520EB can be considered an upgradeable foundation. A user can start with the original elliptical diamond, then experiment with more advanced stylus profiles according to listening preferences and budget. Switching to a MicroLine stylus, for example, provides even finer groove tracking and less record wear over the long term.
The original replacement stylus has the reference VMN20EB.
The VM520EB delivers an output voltage of 4 mV (measured at 1 kHz for a velocity of 5 cm/s), a level sufficient to feed a MM phono input directly without additional amplification. The recommended load impedance is 47 kΩ, the standard value for phono preamplifiers.
The recommended load capacitance is between 100 and 200 pF. This range includes the capacitance of the interconnect cable between turntable and preamp, as well as the input capacitance of the preamp itself. Excessive capacitance can cause treble emphasis and tonal coloration. It is therefore advisable to check your phono preamp specifications and choose a cable of reasonable length.
The dynamic compliance of 8 × 10⁻⁶ cm/dyne at 100 Hz places the VM520EB in the high-compliance category by Japanese standards. In practice, it matches well with tonearms of low to medium effective mass, i.e. the vast majority of arms fitted to contemporary hi-fi turntables.
The VM520EB offers a balanced sound, with a stated frequency response of 20 Hz to 23 kHz. The elliptical diamond provides detailed reproduction of mid and high frequencies, while the bass remains articulated without excessive roundness. The clearly defined stereo separation helps to create an open, airy soundstage.
This cartridge is suitable for a wide range of music, from jazz to rock and chamber classical music. It does, however, show its limits on the most complex orchestral tuttis or very fast transients, where a more advanced stylus profile (MicroLine, Shibata) would provide additional definition.
If your turntable has a standard half-inch (1/2”) headshell or a tonearm with a removable SME-type headshell, the VM520EB can be mounted without difficulty. It is not suitable, however, for turntables with a non-removable integrated cartridge, such as entry-level AT-LP60 models.
Audio-Technica does not specify an exact lifespan, but a bonded elliptical stylus generally offers between 300 and 500 hours of playback under good conditions. Regular maintenance (cleaning the stylus and records) will extend this lifespan.
Yes. All styli in the 500 and 700 series are compatible with the VM520EB body. Installing a VMN40ML effectively turns the cartridge into the equivalent of a VM540ML, with a MicroLine profile.
No. With an output of 4 mV and a standard 47 kΩ impedance, it works with any MM phono preamp on the market. Just make sure that the total capacitance of the chain (cable + preamp) stays close to the 100–200 pF range.
The recommended tracking force is 2 grams, with a tolerance between 1.8 and 2.2 grams. Use your tonearm’s counterweight dial to reach this value. A precision stylus gauge allows for more accurate adjustment.
Yes. The VM520EB/H reference includes the cartridge already installed on the universal AT-HS10BK headshell, compatible with S-shaped or J-shaped tonearms. This option simplifies installation.
The VM530EN uses a nude elliptical diamond instead of the bonded diamond on the VM520EB. The nude diamond, cut from a single piece, has a lower mass at the end of the cantilever, which improves transient tracking. The VM530EN also offers a slightly extended frequency response (20 Hz – 25 kHz) and superior channel separation (28 dB).

Excellent rendering of bass and treble from this cartridge, replacing the Audio Technica AT 3600 cartridge on my recently purchased Thorens TD 201 turntable from this same store.
