Technics marks the final chapter in the G series story with this SL-1210GMEEK Master Edition, a limited-edition turntable that concentrates a decade of innovations on the chassis that redefined direct drive in 2016. With its coreless motor driven by ΔΣ-Drive technology, its four-layer chassis and αGEL-based isolators, this numbered black version takes its bow in gold finish, combining mechanical precision and artisanal construction inherited from over fifty years of Japanese expertise.
Conventional direct-drive turntables suffer from cogging: a rotational irregularity caused by the interaction between the rotor magnets and the iron core of the stator. In 2016, Technics developed an iron-coreless twin-rotor motor, where the magnets are positioned on both sides of the stator. This architecture reduces the load on the bearings while maintaining a starting torque of 0.32 N·m, reaching 33⅓ rpm in 0.7 seconds.
The SL-1210GMEEK adds the ΔΣ-Drive (Delta Sigma Drive) system, transposing to the motor a technology derived from Technics’ digital amplifiers. This device generates a pure sinusoidal signal via delta-sigma modulation controlled by PWM signal. The modulation frequency, raised beyond 20 kHz, eliminates any audible noise and suppresses micro-irregularities in rotation. Sinusoidal waveforms stored in ROM memory replace the simple generation by external coil of previous generations, offering smoother rotation and a lower noise floor.
The platter combines a 2 mm brass top plate, a die-cast aluminum body, and a damping rubber coating covering the entire rear surface. At 3.6 kg, it surpasses the reference SP-10MK2 in inertia and achieves more than double the inertial mass of the SL-1200MK5.
Each platter is individually balanced at the factory on high-precision equipment after assembly. A “Balanced” label certifies that the adjustment has been performed, guaranteeing the absence of excessive vibrations due to uneven weight distribution.
The chassis adopts a four-layer structure: heavy rubber base for damping, two internal layers combining die-cast aluminum and BMC (glass fiber-reinforced thermosetting resin), and a 10 mm brushed aluminum top plate. This BMC offers rigidity, dimensional stability, electrical insulation and corrosion resistance.
The assembly rests on four zinc isolators incorporating αGEL, a proprietary silicone material developed by Taica Corporation. αGEL combines softness and durability with damping performance superior to rubber across a wide frequency range, excelling particularly in low-frequency vibration filtering. This material, also used on the reference SL-1000R turntable, resists weather, ozone, UV and chemicals.
The 230 mm S-shaped tonearm is made of ultra-lightweight cold-drawn magnesium, a material with excellent damping effect. The Technics gimbal suspension is characterized by the intersection of the horizontal rotation axis and the vertical rotation axis at a single central point. The machined housing accommodates high-precision bearings assembled and adjusted manually by Japanese craftsmen, achieving an initial movement sensitivity of 5 mg or less.
The exclusive gold finish of the tonearm, logos and headshell constitutes the visual signature of this Master Edition, reflecting a decade of expertise since the launch of the SL-1200G series in 2016.
The power supply adopts the principles developed for the SL-1000R. The switching circuit operates at a frequency above 100 kHz, eliminating the need for a bulky transformer and its mechanical vibrations. An active noise cancellation device combines a residual noise detector and an error amplifier, injecting an inverted-phase current to suppress parasitic components, particularly in low frequencies.
The tonearm allows height adjustment from 0 to 6 mm and tracking force adjustment from 0 to 4 g. Thanks to the supplied auxiliary counterweights, the turntable accepts cartridges from 5.6 to 19.8 g (headshell included). It plays 33⅓, 45 and 78 rpm records with wow and flutter of 0.025% weighted RMS value.
The SL-1210GMEEK is produced in 1210 numbered units starting from K0000, in black finish. Its silver version, the SL-1200GME, is limited to 1200 numbered units starting from S0000. At 18 kg and dimensions of 453 × 173 × 372 mm, this manual turntable comes with a dust cover, 45 rpm adapter, counterweights with auxiliary weights, headshell with hardware, overhang gauge, phono cable, ground cable and power cord.
The SL-1210GME features a black finish and bears numbering from K0000 to K1209 for 1210 units. The SL-1200GME is distinguished by its silver finish and numbers from S0000 to S1199, limited to 1200 units. Technically and mechanically, both models are strictly identical: same twin-rotor coreless motor, same ΔΣ-Drive technology, same four-layer chassis, same αGEL isolators and same gold magnesium tonearm.
No, the original SL-1200G and SL-1210G models did not feature the ΔΣ-Drive system. This technology was developed later and first applied to the SL-1200GR2 and SL-1300G models. The Master Edition represents the first and only integration of ΔΣ-Drive on the G chassis, thus combining the best of Technics expertise: the twin-rotor coreless motor of the 1200G with the advanced motor control of subsequent generations.
The SL-1210GMEEK accepts a wide range of cartridges thanks to the supplied auxiliary counterweights. The compatible mass range extends from 5.6 g to 19.8 g (headshell included), covering virtually all cartridges on the market. The standard 12.7 mm (1/2 inch) mounting spacing ensures universal compatibility. The tracking force adjustment from 0 to 4 g allows fine-tuning of pressure according to the cartridge manufacturer’s recommendations.
The gold magnesium tonearm of the Master Edition is integrated into the chassis and constitutes a central element of this limited edition. Technics designed the assembly as a coherent system where each component contributes to overall performance. Any modification would fall outside the scope of this numbered edition and would potentially affect the mechanical and acoustic balance sought by the engineers. For those wishing to experiment with different tonearms, other Technics models or other manufacturers offer this modularity.
