Overview
An MDF base with walnut veneer, a carbon fiber tonearm, an elliptical diamond cartridge: this belt-drive turntable focuses its budget on the elements that really matter for sound quality. Audio Technica, founded in Tokyo in 1962 to manufacture phono cartridges, here applies over sixty years of analog expertise to a stripped-down manual turntable, with no frills or superfluous functions.
A chassis designed for silence
The AT-LPW40WN’s plinth is built on an MDF (medium-density fiberboard) panel covered with a varnished walnut veneer. This material wasn’t chosen solely for its elegance: MDF efficiently absorbs low-frequency vibrations that could travel back up to the cartridge and cause acoustic feedback. Anti-vibration feet complete this isolation work, while the die-cast aluminum platter, topped with a grooved rubber mat, helps damp mechanical resonances.
The power supply is external. The AC/DC transformer, moved outside the chassis, prevents electromagnetic interference from being introduced close to the audio signal. This separation, common on more expensive turntables, contributes to a cleaner sound.
A rigid, well-damped carbon tonearm
The straight tonearm, made of carbon fiber, has an effective length of 223.6 mm. The rigidity of carbon limits unwanted vibrations that could impair the reading of the grooves. Its suspension element uses a lightweight C-shaped profile, and the whole assembly benefits from proper damping that prevents unwanted oscillations.
The hydraulic cueing lever lets you lower and raise the stylus gently, without jerks. Tracking force can be set between 0 and 3 grams via the graduated counterweight, and the adjustable anti-skating control compensates for the centripetal force that naturally pulls the arm toward the center of the record. These settings require a bit of patience during the initial setup, but the procedure remains straightforward with a minimum of care.
The AT-VM95E cartridge and its upgrade potential
Audio Technica equips this turntable with an MM (moving magnet) cartridge from its VM95 series, mounted on a standard AT-HS4 headshell (½-inch mount). The VM95E model features an elliptical diamond stylus (0.3 × 0.7 mil) mounted on an aluminum cantilever. This stylus geometry offers better contact with the groove walls than a conical stylus, resulting in better treble definition and reduced distortion.
The real advantage of this cartridge lies in its modularity: the body accepts any stylus from the VM95 range via simple clip-on mounting. You can later upgrade to a microlinear or Shibata stylus without changing the cartridge body itself, depending on your budget and upgrade ambitions. The 4 mV output level ensures hassle-free compatibility with most MM phono preamps.
A built-in preamp for easier setup
A PHONO/LINE switch on the back lets you toggle between two output modes. In LINE position, the built-in preamp amplifies the signal (35 dB gain) and applies the RIAA equalization curve, delivering 200 mV at the output. The turntable can then be connected directly to the auxiliary input of an amplifier, a soundbar, or active speakers, with no additional equipment needed.
In PHONO position, the internal preamp is bypassed: the raw signal (4 mV) is sent directly to an external preamp or a dedicated phono input. This bypass option preserves the system’s upgradeability. The built-in preamp does its job properly, but a quality external preamp will reveal more nuance in the sound, with better dynamics and a more open soundstage in particular.
Rotational stability and motorization
The DC servo motor includes a speed sensor that corrects rotational variations in real time. Wow and flutter remain below 0.15% at 3 kHz, an honorable value in this price range. Speed selection (33⅓ or 45 rpm) is handled by a single rotary knob that also serves as the power on/off switch. The belt drive mechanically isolates the platter from the motor, reducing the transmission of vibrations.
As a fully manual turntable, the AT-LPW40WN has no automatic start or end-of-record stop: the platter keeps spinning until you turn it off. This is a deliberate choice, shared by most sound-quality-focused turntables, as the absence of automatic mechanisms simplifies construction and avoids adding potential sources of noise or failure.
Setup and integration
The turntable arrives partially disassembled: platter, counterweight, headshell, and cover need to be fitted during setup. The operation takes about fifteen minutes, with the trickiest part being the insertion of the hinges for the rigid plastic dust cover. The quick-start guide, which is mostly visual, may leave those who prefer written instructions a bit puzzled.
The dual RCA output cable is detachable, making it easy to replace with a higher-quality cable if needed. The compact dimensions (420 × 340 × 117 mm, 5 kg without cover) allow easy integration into a standard hi-fi cabinet. The removable cover provides effective protection from dust when the turntable is not in use.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can this turntable be used with Bluetooth speakers or a multiroom system?
Does the cartridge need to be aligned on delivery?
The cartridge is pre-mounted on the headshell, but it may be worth checking the alignment with a suitable protractor. Some users have noticed a slight factory misalignment. A precision scale also lets you check the actual tracking force against the counterweight’s markings.
Which replacement styli are compatible?
All styli from the VM95 series can be clipped onto the cartridge body: VM95C (conical), VM95E (elliptical), VM95EN, VM95ML (microlinear), VM95SH (Shibata). The upgrade takes just a few seconds and requires no tools.
Can the turntable play 78 rpm records?
No, only 33⅓ and 45 rpm speeds are available. The supplied elliptical stylus is in any case not suitable for the wider grooves of 78 rpm records, which require a specific stylus tip.
Is it possible to digitize records with this turntable?
The AT-LPW40WN has no USB output or built-in analog-to-digital converter. To digitize your records, you’ll need to use an external audio interface connected to a computer.
Is the turntable sensitive to external vibrations?
Like any belt-drive turntable, it benefits from being placed on a stable support, away from the speakers and protected from shocks. The MDF chassis attenuates vibrations, but an unstable piece of furniture or heavy footsteps nearby can still cause skipping.
