Overview

A 165 mm woofer, a metal grille that disappears once painted, and a sensitivity of 90 dB: that’s what this round speaker from the Basic series has to offer. Designed by Belgian manufacturer ArtSound, the MDC620 fully embraces its pragmatic positioning. No overblown promises or superfluous technologies, but a two-way coaxial architecture that gets the job done honestly in rooms of up to 50 m².

A generous format for medium-sized rooms

With its 6.5-inch driver made of polypropylene reinforced with carbon fibers, the MDC620 is the largest model in the Basic range. It stands out from its smaller siblings — the MDC401 (4 inches) and the MDC501 (5.25 inches) — with a deeper low-frequency extension, reaching 70 Hz compared with 90 Hz for the most compact model. This extended bass response allows it to deliver more body and warmth, especially on voices and acoustic instruments.

The 12.7 mm polycarbonate tweeter, mounted in the center of the woofer in a coaxial configuration, ensures even sound dispersion throughout the room. This setup avoids time delays between low and high frequencies, a significant advantage when listening while moving around the space.

Installation and ceiling integration

Installation requires a circular cutout of 205 mm in diameter, for a total diameter of 240 mm once the speaker is in place. The mounting depth is 70 mm, which means sufficient space is needed behind the suspended ceiling. This dimension remains reasonable for most residential or professional setups.

The ABS frame holds a metal grille supplied in white. ArtSound suggests painting it in the color of your choice so that it blends into the ceiling. A welcome detail in interiors where discretion is key. The low weight — 1.2 kg per unit — makes handling easier during installation.

Amplification and setup

The MDC620 has a nominal impedance of 8 ohms and accepts amplification between 20 and 120 watts. Its high sensitivity of 90 dB means it will deliver a comfortable sound level without drawing on the full power of the amplifier. An entry-level model with 30 to 50 watts per channel will be sufficient in most cases.

To optimize acoustic performance, ArtSound recommends adding a waterproof MDF back box (reference KITRO3, sold separately). This installation kit creates a sealed volume behind the speaker, eliminating unwanted resonances that can occur when the driver radiates directly into the void of a suspended ceiling. The benefit is most noticeable in the low end, with bass that is tighter and less boomy.

Suitable uses and environments

This speaker fits into a wide range of contexts: background sound reinforcement in a living room or kitchen, music distribution in an office or waiting room, or even installation in a shop or restaurant. It is not waterproof and is therefore unsuitable for damp areas such as bathrooms or poolside locations — ArtSound offers other models specifically designed for those environments.

The Basic series is all about simplicity. No pivoting tweeter, no 100 V transformer for long cable runs, no moisture protection: these features are available in other product lines. Here, the focus is on cost-effective efficiency.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many speakers are needed to properly cover a room?

As a general rule, one pair of speakers is recommended for areas up to 25 m², and two pairs (i.e. four speakers) for larger rooms. In a 40 m² living room, four MDC620s distributed symmetrically will provide even coverage with no dead zones. The spacing between each point depends on the ceiling height and the room’s acoustics.

Can several MDC620s be connected to the same amplifier channel?

Yes, but you need to keep an eye on the resulting impedance. Two 8-ohm speakers wired in parallel present an impedance of 4 ohms. Check that your amplifier can handle this load. In series, the impedance rises to 16 ohms, which reduces the output power but is generally compatible.

Is the grille easy to remove for painting?

The metal grille can be unclipped by hand. Before painting, light sanding and the application of a primer will improve adhesion. Use thin coats of acrylic paint to avoid clogging the perforations and affecting sound transmission.

What is the difference compared with the MDC501 model?

The MDC501 features a 5.25-inch woofer and extends down to 85 Hz. Its 175 mm cutout makes it better suited to smaller spaces or ceilings with limited depth. The larger MDC620 is a better fit for living areas where you want a fuller, more spacious sound.
