Overview

Weighing in at 18 grams, this anodized aluminum headshell sits at the top of the LH range in terms of mass. This is no trivial detail: it allows you to increase the effective mass of the tonearm to obtain an optimal resonance frequency with moving-coil (MC) cartridges or certain low-compliance MM cartridges. Here, Audio-Technica draws on more than fifty years of experience in manufacturing cartridges and accessories for vinyl turntables.

Calibrated weight for demanding cartridges

Choosing a headshell is not just a matter of build quality: it is above all a matter of mechanical compatibility. The combined mass of the headshell and cartridge, together with the effective mass of the tonearm, determines the system’s resonance frequency. Ideally, this frequency should fall between 8 and 12 Hz to guarantee stable tracking, free from interference caused by warped records and without loss of low-frequency information.

MC cartridges, which generally have lower compliance than their MM counterparts, require a higher effective mass to reach this resonance range. The AT-LH18H meets this need by adding 18 grams to the system, which makes it primarily suitable for medium- to high-mass tonearms fitted with cartridges such as the AT-OC9X or ART9X.

Construction and anodized finish

The body of the AT-LH18H is machined from aluminum treated with hard anodizing. This process strengthens the surface and helps dissipate unwanted vibrations that could impair playback. The resulting rigidity allows the cartridge to operate in a mechanically stable environment, a necessary condition for getting the most out of high-end cartridges.

The internal wiring uses OFC copper (oxygen-free copper), a standard in analog hi-fi to limit micro dropouts in the signal caused by conductor oxidation. These leads come pre-installed and are ready to connect to the four pins of the cartridge.

Built-in alignment adjustments

The AT-LH18H incorporates an adjustable cylinder that allows for two essential adjustments. The first concerns the overhang, that is, the longitudinal position of the cartridge relative to the tonearm. The through, non-threaded mounting holes let you slide the cartridge back and forth to set this distance according to the turntable manufacturer’s recommendations.

The second adjustment is azimuth, meaning the cartridge’s lateral tilt. Poor azimuth adjustment throws off the balance between left and right channels; the AT-LH18H’s adjustable cylinder lets you correct this parameter precisely. These adjustment options make this headshell a suitable tool for demanding setups where every parameter matters.

Compatibility and mounting

The ½” bayonet mount (SME type) is used on the vast majority of tonearms with removable headshells. The AT-LH18H connects directly to them without an adapter. The through, non-threaded holes are designed for cartridges with threaded bodies, such as the VM95 or AT-OC9X series. For cartridges without threads, the supplied nuts allow for a conventional mounting.

The kit includes two mounting screws, two plastic washers to prevent metal-on-metal contact, and a hex key for tightening. Note: the OCC variants in the LH range (AT-LH13/OCC, AT-LH15/OCC, AT-LH18/OCC) feature fixed, integrated threads and are not suitable for cartridges with fully threaded bodies.

Positioning within the LH range

Audio-Technica offers its LH series in four weights: 11 g (AT-LH11H), 13 g (AT-LH13H), 15 g (AT-LH15H), and 18 g (AT-LH18H). The lightest model, at 11 grams, is the only one compatible with the straight tonearms of Audio-Technica turntables. The other three use a standard angled shape.

The choice between these models depends on the target tonearm/cartridge combination. A resonance calculator (available on specialist sites such as VinylEngine) can be used to determine the optimal weight based on the arm’s effective mass and the cartridge’s compliance. The AT-LH18H is particularly well suited to configurations where the effective mass needs to be increased to reach the recommended resonance range.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which Audio-Technica cartridges are compatible with the AT-LH18H?

This headshell accepts all standard ½” mount cartridges. Audio-Technica’s VM95, AT-OC9X, and ART9X series, which feature threaded bodies, are especially easy to mount thanks to the through holes. Cartridges from other brands in the ½” format are also compatible.

How can I tell if the 18 g model is suitable for my tonearm?

Check your tonearm’s effective mass (indicated in its documentation) and your cartridge’s compliance. Use a resonance calculator to estimate the resulting frequency. With a medium-mass arm (12–18 g effective mass) and a low-compliance MC cartridge (8–15 µm/mN), the AT-LH18H is generally an appropriate choice.

Can the OFC leads be replaced?

The leads are soldered to the headshell and are not designed to be user-replaceable. In case of wear or damage, replacing the entire headshell is recommended.

Can I use this headshell with an Audio-Technica turntable that has a straight tonearm?

No. The AT-LH18H has an angled shape that is incompatible with straight arms. For these setups, Audio-Technica offers the AT-LH11H, the only model in the LH series designed for this type of arm.

What is the difference between the AT-LH18H and the AT-LH18/OCC?

The AT-LH18H has through mounting holes, suitable for cartridges with integrated threads. The AT-LH18/OCC has fixed, integrated threads and uses PCOCC copper conductors (monocrystalline copper). The latter is not suitable for cartridges with threaded bodies.

Does azimuth adjustment require special tools?

The adjustable cylinder allows you to change the azimuth manually or with the supplied hex key. An azimuth alignment mirror or a dedicated tool makes visual verification easier but is not essential for routine adjustments.
