XGIMI Elfin Flip Laser HD
Overview
For years, XGIMI’s portable projectors shared the same limitation: brightness too low for anything other than a room plunged into darkness. In 2026, the Elfin Flip range swaps its LED light source for an RGB laser, multiplying brightness by four. The image becomes more readable when daylight enters the room, while the casing retains its notebook-like slimness.
A laser light source for projection in broad daylight
The most visible change in this generation is the light engine. Where the original Elfin Flip relied on an LED diode capped at 400 ISO lumens, the laser version reaches 1,600 ISO lumens thanks to a three-beam RGB source (red, green, blue) supplied by Japan’s Nichia. In concrete terms, the image remains readable when a lamp is on or when a little natural light filters through the curtains, an area where older Elfin Flip models quickly fell short.
The laser also brings a wider color palette. The projector covers 110% of the BT.2020 space, the color reference for high dynamic range content, which results in stronger greens and reds than with a conventional LED source. An eye-protection sensor dims the beam as soon as someone passes in front of the lens, useful when children are playing in the room.
A book-like format with integrated handle
Placed on a shelf, the casing looks like a large hardcover book: 254 × 245 × 75 mm for 1.38 kg. The stand tilts through 150°, which serves two purposes. It angles the image upward for ceiling projection, handy for watching a movie in bed, and it folds into a handle for carrying the projector with one hand. Once closed, that same stand covers the lens and protects it from dust and scratches.
The word “portable” deserves some nuance: the projector is easy to move, but it does not have a battery. A power outlet is still required every time it is used, which makes it better suited to moving between the living room, bedroom, and office than following a picnic into the garden. For placement, the 1.2:1 throw ratio requires a few meters of distance as soon as you aim for a large diagonal; the image ranges from 40 to 200 inches depending on the available distance.
Full HD image and motion compensation
The resolution remains Full HD 1080p (1920 × 1080 pixels), produced by a 0.23-inch DMD chip, the micro-mirror matrix specific to DLP technology. On a moderate diagonal and at a normal viewing distance, the gap versus 4K is barely noticeable; it becomes more apparent on very large images, where the 4K version of the range retains the advantage in fine detail. The announced dynamic contrast reaches 10,000:1, and HDR10 and HLG compatibility help preserve detail in dark areas as well as highlights.
For fast-moving content, sports or video games, MEMC motion compensation inserts calculated frames to smooth movement and reduce blur. The projector makes do with digital zoom, without optical zoom: enlarging or reducing the image without moving the projector comes at the cost of a slight loss in definition, one more reason to get the installation distance right from the start.
Automatic adjustments from startup
The ISA (Intelligent Screen Adaptation) suite handles focus and geometry without intervention. Keystone correction straightens the image when the projector is not perfectly facing the wall, autofocus adjusts sharpness, and automatic alignment fits the image to the edges of a projection screen if you are using one. Everything works continuously: move the projector during a session, and the image reframes itself without displaying a menu. Two more advanced automated features, obstacle avoidance and wall color adaptation, remain reserved for the 4K version.
Built-in Google TV and connectivity options
The Google TV system comes preinstalled, with Chromecast built in. Netflix, Prime Video, YouTube, and other services run through the Play Store, with no external box to connect. Wireless connectivity relies on dual-band WiFi 5 and Bluetooth 5.1, the latter also used to connect headphones or a speaker. On the wired side, the projector has one HDMI eARC input and one USB 2.0 port: enough to connect a console or a stick, but a single HDMI port means you have to choose your source or use a switch when several devices are in use.
Sound comes from a 7 W Harman Kardon speaker. For a bedroom or occasional viewing, the audio performance is sufficient and remains restrained; the stated operating noise does not exceed 28 dB, meaning discreet fan noise. For more impact, the HDMI eARC output allows connection to a soundbar or compatible amplifier.
What the press says
The XGIMI Elfin Flip Laser is mediocre for a home theater. It has good contrast with fairly deep blacks in dark scenes, and it maintains that contrast well in brighter scenes, so the image has consistent depth throughout. The projector's biggest downside is its inability to remove judder from most sources, so motion looks choppy in movies and shows. Fortunately, it has exceptional color volume, so colors are rich and vibrant. [...] Unfortunately, there are rainbow flashes that may bother viewers who are sensitive to them, and there's no setting to reduce the effect.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference compared with the Elfin Flip 4K from the same range?
Both models share the 1,600-lumen RGB laser light source and the compact format. The Elfin Flip 4K offers 4K resolution (larger DMD chip), adds optical zoom, a 20,000:1 contrast ratio, and advanced gaming features (120 Hz, VRR, ALLM). The Laser HD version remains Full HD with digital zoom and a 10,000:1 contrast ratio, for a lighter and slightly slimmer device.
Can the XGIMI Elfin Flip Laser HD run on battery power outdoors?
No, no battery is built in, and a mains outlet is required for each use. For truly autonomous outdoor use, XGIMI’s MoGo range, equipped with a battery, is better suited to this need.
Can you play video games comfortably on it?
Yes, keeping in mind latency of around 20 ms in 1080p at 60 Hz, which is acceptable for the majority of solo and family games. Players seeking very high responsiveness or 120 Hz will turn to the 4K version, which is better equipped in this regard.
Does the projector receive live TV channels?
It does not include a DTT tuner. Watching live TV requires a channel streaming app or an external device connected via HDMI (operator box, decoder). Without that, use is limited to Google TV on-demand services.
Do you need a projection screen, or is a white wall enough?
A light, smooth wall already gives good results. A dedicated screen improves contrast and color uniformity; in this case, automatic alignment fits the image to its edges.
Can it be used as a simple display for a computer or a console?
Yes, by connecting the source to the HDMI input. The projector then displays the signal just like a monitor would, which is suitable for both big-screen work and gaming.
What image size do you get in a room?
With a 1.2:1 ratio, allow about 2.1 meters of throw distance for 80 inches and 2.7 meters for 100 inches. A diagonal of 80 to 100 inches remains realistic in a bedroom; the maximum 200 inches assumes a large room and significant throw distance.
