The Hifiman Edition XV is part of the Edition series and features a sound signature different from the brand’s previous models. It uses a Neo Supernano Gen.2 diaphragm and permanent magnets without rare earths. This open-back headphone weighs 452 grams, has a sensitivity of 92 dB, and remains compatible with a wide range of amplifiers.
A revolutionary diaphragm for instant response
The technological heart of the Edition XV lies in its second-generation Neo Supernano diaphragm, whose thickness has been reduced by 60% compared to the previous generation used in the Edition XS. This ultra-thin, nanometer-scale membrane features optimized conductive plating that allows oscillation up to 20,000 times per second with minimal inertia. This engineering feat results in exceptionally swift transient reproduction, delivering micro-detail definition without dynamic compression, even at high listening levels around 100 dB.
The planar driver construction follows the characteristic oval shape of Hifiman’s high-end headphones, with effective dimensions of 80 x 50 mm for the active diaphragm area. The protective metal grilles adopt the patented “window shade” design, allowing optimal airflow while protecting the delicate membrane from dust and particles. This open design helps create an expansive soundstage with naturally deep projection, particularly appreciable on complex orchestral recordings.
The major innovation lies in the completely redesigned magnetic system. The Edition XV’s permanent magnets without rare earths represent a notable technical and ecological advancement. Thanks to optimized geometry and next-generation magnetic materials, these magnets achieve sensitivity comparable to designs using rare earths while reducing turbulence and sound diffraction. This technology, derived from research conducted for the brand’s flagship models, allows the Edition XV to maintain a sensitivity of 92 dB despite the absence of neodymium or other costly elements.
Reworked ergonomics and everyday comfort
The second-generation composite headband system is a substantial improvement over previous generations. Made from next-generation composite materials, it is 20 to 30 grams lighter than the Edition XS headband. Rotating hinges allow lateral adjustment of 10 to 15 degrees, ensuring a more precise morphological fit for different head shapes. High-density memory foam inside the headband distributes pressure evenly across the skull, avoiding hot spots even during extended listening sessions.
The hybrid earpads employ a sophisticated construction with a contact surface in leatherette and variable-density foam. This design provides optimal acoustic sealing without exerting excessive pressure on the temples. The generous internal volume of the earcups comfortably accommodates ears of all sizes, creating a natural acoustic space that contributes to the three-dimensional spaciousness characteristic of high-end open-back headphones.
The height adjustment system uses metal sliders with positive detents, offering a reassuring tactile feel during adjustments. Each click corresponds to a precise increment, making it easy to remember your preferred position. The clamping force, precisely calibrated, keeps the headphone stable without causing fatigue during long listening sessions— a delicate balance Hifiman has refined over successive generations.
An atypical sound signature for the brand
Contrary to Hifiman’s usual tendency toward an analytical, crystalline presentation, the Edition XV takes a warmer, more forgiving approach. The bass range is exemplary in linearity with a slight overall lift that adds body and substance without compromising definition. This presentation is more reminiscent of Audeze’s approach than the typically tighter Hifiman planar signature, delivering particularly alluring density and texture with electronic genres and modern jazz.
The midrange exhibits remarkable coherence with a slight recession between 1 and 2 kHz that smooths vocal presentation without compromising intelligibility. This subtle coloration lends vocals a liquid smoothness that flatters recordings of varying quality. Acoustic instruments retain their natural timbre, with particularly convincing reproduction of the piano’s complex harmonics and bowed strings.
The treble represents the most radical departure from Hifiman’s usual sonic philosophy. Rather than the brilliance and extreme extension characteristic of models like the Ananda Stealth or the Arya Organic, the Edition XV favors a gentler, more forgiving presentation. This approach significantly broadens its potential audience, appealing to treble-sensitive listeners while retaining enough detail to satisfy precision enthusiasts. The frequency response nonetheless extends from 8 Hz to 50 kHz, ensuring complete reproduction of the audible spectrum and beyond.
Amplification and system synergy
With an impedance of 12 ohms and a sensitivity of 92 dB, the Edition XV has moderate yet specific amplification requirements. While a modern smartphone can technically drive it to acceptable listening levels, the experience is suboptimal, with noticeable dynamic compression and a reduced soundstage. A quality USB DAC such as the iFi Hip DAC or the FiiO KA5 represents the minimum required to properly leverage its capabilities, delivering the 250 mW necessary for satisfying dynamic performance.
For optimal results, a dedicated amplifier providing at least 500 mW at 12 ohms fully reveals the Edition XV’s potential. Tube amplifiers bring particularly happy synergy, their natural warmth complementing the headphone’s already velvety signature. Class A solid-state amplifiers, like the Schiit Mjolnir or the Burson Conductor, offer the control and power required to maintain precision in complex passages while preserving the headphone’s inherent musicality.
The supplied 150 cm detachable cable uses angled 3.5 mm jacks at each earcup, a now-standard configuration at Hifiman that eases replacement and upgrades. The stock cable quality—single-crystal copper with TPU insulation—is perfectly adequate for daily use, though perfectionists will appreciate the option to upgrade to silver or alloy cables to further refine the sound.
Positioning and evolution within the lineup
The Edition XV continues a prestigious lineage that began in 2015 with the original Edition X, followed in 2021 by the much-praised Edition XS. Rather than a simple incremental evolution, the XV represents a philosophical shift toward a more universally accessible signature. Paradoxically, this brings it closer to the Edition X V2, a cult model appreciated for its atypical smoothness within Hifiman’s catalog.
Compared to the still-available Edition XS, the XV stands out with its 60% thinner diaphragm, eco-friendly magnets without rare earths, and, above all, a radically different sound signature. Where the XS favors liveliness and surgical precision, the XV prioritizes fluidity and naturalness. This divergence allows Hifiman to cover a broader spectrum of audiophile preferences without cannibalizing its own sales.
In the broader market context, the Edition XV positions itself as an enticing alternative to established references. Its smoother signature brings it closer to the Meze 109 Pro or the SennheiserHD660S2, while retaining the technical advantages inherent to planar magnetic technology. Robust construction and exemplary comfort make it a rational choice for long listening sessions in the studio or at home.

This is an amazing headphone for the price, very well build, lightweight and comfortable,
For those who like that typical Hifiman sound signature be aware that this is not the usual bright sounding headphone, it has a darker tuning which is immediately noticeable when comparing to other headphones from the brand and i guess that was what they hand in mind when the designing the Edition XV to attract new customers. After getting used the sound profile i kind a like them especially when i do not want to dissect every single detail in the music and i simply want to have a relaxing listening experience after a long day in the office.
Thanks to the HS Team for a quick and flawless transaction as usual!

I finally received my Edition XV and listened to it at length. Well, I have to admit I’m quite surprised, even though I somewhat expected it based on the few reviews available: to sum up, forget the Hifiman sound!
The tuning is hard to fault; I don’t even hear the famous Hifiman dip in the 1–2 kHz range (even though it shows up on the graphs). No issues with treble peaks or any harshness—you put the headphones on and let the songs roll. In fact, if Sennheiser had made a planar HD600, it would be called the Edition XV.
You might be left wanting in terms of technicalities: the soundstage is very decent, but it doesn’t have the height that, for example, the Edition XS could achieve. The bass is also less impactful than on the Edition XS; it seems to extend less deep, even if that’s not what the graphs suggest. Likewise, imaging is less sharply defined than on the Edition XS. And yet everything sounds much more accurate than any Hifiman I’ve owned (including the Sundara).
In short, I’m not sure how to interpret this XV. I have to admit I enjoyed what I heard (note that I’m a die-hard HD600 fan), but I was perhaps expecting a bit more of the technical prowess typical of Hifiman headphones. To be fair, as mentioned above, I only listened for about an hour.
In any case, this Edition XV is quite a turnaround from Hifiman!
