Fifteen years of acoustic research condensed into a pocket-sized format. With this second generation of wireless earbuds, the French manufacturer refines its offering: redesigned and more compact design, new patented technologies for noise reduction, reimagined transducer. The Gemini II take up the torch from the first Gemini while correcting several of their teething problems, notably the bulkiness of the case and the absence of multipoint connection.
The Gemini II retain the visual DNA of the Phantom speakers, with their rounded silhouette and circular logo serving as a touch-sensitive surface. The size reduction is noticeable: the earbuds lose 22% of volume compared to their predecessors, and the charging case is 40% more compact. The latter abandons its sliding mechanism in favor of a more conventional hinged lid, but gains in ease of handling.
Each earbud weighs 6 grams and comes in matte black or iconic white. Two additional finishes, Deep Forest and Light Pearl, enrich the catalog in line with the Devialet Ultimate. An Opéra de Paris edition, the result of the partnership between Devialet and the Parisian institution, adds 24-carat gold plating on the metal elements of the case and earbuds, accompanied by an exclusive carrying pouch. The set remains IPX4 certified to resist water splashes and perspiration.
At the heart of each earbud, a custom-developed 10 mm dynamic transducer. The diaphragm benefits from a titanium coating that gives it rigidity and responsiveness, enabling deep bass from 5 Hz and clear treble up to 20 kHz. The harmonic distortion rate remains below 0.1% at 100 dB SPL, a level of fidelity typically found on bulkier equipment.
The sound signature favors low frequencies with a certain generosity, while preserving vocal clarity and treble openness. The Devialet Gemini app, available on iOS and Android, offers a six-band graphic equalizer to adjust the rendering according to your preferences. The aptX, AAC and SBC codecs ensure quality audio transmission with compatible sources.
Active noise reduction is one of these earbuds’ strong points. The hybrid system combines two microphones per earbud (one external and one internal) with the proprietary IDC (Internal Delay Compensation) algorithm. This patented technology compensates for the latency inherent in noise reduction loops, improving attenuation in high frequencies, where many competitors show their limits. Isolation can reach 40 dB according to Devialet.
Another innovation of this generation: AWR (Active Wind Reduction). Each microphone is protected by a cavity and a material filtering turbulence, while an algorithm dynamically adjusts the intensity of noise reduction and transparency mode based on detected wind. This dual hardware and software approach preserves call quality and music listening outdoors.
A bone conduction voice sensor completes the system for phone communications, capturing the voice directly through jaw vibrations rather than through the air. Results in noisy or windy environments are improved, even if microphone quality during calls remains behind compared to the excellence of musical rendering.
Bluetooth 5.2 brings the long-awaited multipoint connection: the Gemini II can remain paired with two devices simultaneously (smartphone and computer, for example) and automatically switch from one to the other depending on activity. An incoming call on the phone thus pauses music playing from the computer. The signal remains stable within a 20-meter radius. Google Fast Pair simplifies initial pairing on Android.
The touch controls, located on the logo of each earbud, are configured via the app: play/pause, track navigation, switching between noise reduction and transparency mode, volume control. The latter requires a double press followed by a hold, a slightly less intuitive gesture that nevertheless avoids accidental triggers. The infrared sensor detects earbud removal and automatically pauses playback.
With noise reduction activated, each earbud charge offers approximately 5 hours of listening time, a figure in the segment average. The case allows three to four full recharges, bringing total battery life to 22 hours. Charging is done via USB-C or on a compatible Qi surface, with a full charge time of 1h40 for the earbuds and 1h30 for the case.
The in-ear shape has been reworked to fit more morphologies. Four silicone tip sizes (XS, S, M, L) allow adjustment of insertion and passive isolation. The nozzle remains quite short, which limits intrusion into the ear canal. The fit proves stable, including during movement, thanks to an optimized curvature that rests on the hollow of the ear.
The thickness of the earbuds, greater than the average of in-ear models, can create slight pressure during extended sessions. This sensation diminishes with habit, but the most sensitive ears may feel it. Also note: pressing on the touch surface generates a pressure effect in the ear canal, a common drawback of this type of control.
Can I use one earbud at a time?
Yes, each earbud works independently. However, certain features such as volume control are only accessible with both earbuds worn.
Is the app essential to use the Gemini II?
No, the earbuds work as soon as Bluetooth pairing is complete. The app does however provide access to the equalizer, customize touch controls, update firmware and check the battery level of each element.
Are the Gemini II compatible with voice assistants?
Yes, Siri and Google Assistant are accessible. Invoking the assistant can be assigned to one of the touch controls via the Devialet Gemini app.
Can you adjust the intensity of noise reduction?
Unlike the first Gemini which offered several levels, this generation only offers a single active noise reduction mode, in addition to transparency mode. Adjustment is done adaptively and automatically according to the environment.
A beautiful iteration of the brand's first true wireless earbuds, the Devialet Gemini II once again demonstrate the impressive technological mastery of the French manufacturer, even when compared to major international players. Premium, equipped with superb ANC and excellent sound quality, these new earbuds have little to envy from their most high-end competitors.
