Overview
Two large floorstanding speakers at the front, a center speaker under the screen and two small bookshelf speakers at the rear: this package brings together the five speakers of a 5.0 home theater system from a single family, Triangle’s Borea range. The three models share the same tweeter and the same type of driver cone, so a voice or effect moving from one speaker to another retains the same tonal character. The subwoofer can be chosen to suit the room.
The same tweeter and cone material across all five speakers
In a home theater, sound constantly moves from one speaker to another: a character leaving the frame, a car crossing the room, music enveloping the space. If the speakers do not share the same sound signature, these movements become audible as changes in timbre. Triangle addresses this by fitting the BR09, BRC1 and BR02 with the same 25 mm EFS (Efficient Flow System) tweeter. Its silk dome sits behind a phase plug and within a shallow horn that limits edge effects. The aim is to distribute high frequencies more evenly around the speaker: someone sitting at the end of the sofa hears treble similar to what a person in the middle hears, which matters more in home theater than in stereo listening from a single position.
The same principle applies to the frequencies that reproduce voices. All three models use natural cellulose pulp cones for the midrange, a material Triangle developed for its Esprit Ez range before bringing it to Borea, with a revised cone profile for greater rigidity. Cellulose damps its own resonances well, resulting in a midrange without pronounced coloration, where dialogue intelligibility and the natural sound of singing voices matter most.
BR09: 1.10-meter, three-way floorstanding speakers
The BR09 speakers do most of the work. Each divides the frequency range among three types of driver: the tweeter above 3900 Hz, a 16 cm cellulose midrange driver between 310 and 3900 Hz, and three 16 cm fiberglass bass drivers below 310 Hz. This three-way design frees the midrange driver from the large excursions demanded by low frequencies, leaving it to reproduce voices without also having to follow a double bass line or an explosion. Rigid and resistant to deformation, fiberglass keeps the bass under control at high volumes. The three bass drivers work in a large bass-reflex enclosure with a front-facing port, reaching down to 35 Hz: enough to give music and films substance even before a subwoofer is added.
With a sensitivity of 92.5 dB, the BR09 speakers are among those that are easy to play loud: each watt supplied by the amplifier produces more sound output than it would with a less sensitive speaker. Triangle recommends 60 to 300 W of amplification per channel into 8 Ω, and impedance does not fall below 3.3 Ω in the bass, a load most home theater amplifiers can handle without difficulty. The brand recommends them for rooms larger than 30 m².
Each floorstanding speaker weighs nearly 22 kg and rests on a base wider than the cabinet for improved stability. The base takes steel spikes for rugs and carpets, or rubber feet for hard floors. The fabric grille attaches magnetically, leaving no visible fasteners on the front when removed.
BRC1: a center speaker to place under the screen
The BRC1 handles most of a film’s dialogue, and its horizontal shape (48.5 cm wide, 17.6 cm high and 27.4 cm deep) lets it fit on a TV stand or under a projection screen. Its two 13 cm cellulose drivers flank the EFS tweeter, with a crossover at 2750 Hz. The bass-reflex ports open at the front, allowing it to be placed in a cabinet recess or near a wall without the bass becoming boomy or the furniture starting to vibrate.
Its frequency response extends down to 57 Hz and its sensitivity reaches 90 dB, slightly lower than the floorstanding speakers. With a minimum impedance of 5.3 Ω, it is the easiest load in the package for the amplifier to drive.
BR02: compact bookshelf speakers for surround channels
For the rear, Triangle has chosen the smallest speaker in the range. The BR02 stands 31 cm tall and pairs the EFS tweeter with a 13 cm cellulose driver covering the midrange and bass, with a crossover at 2500 Hz. It reaches down to 51 Hz, more than enough for surround channels, whose bass is generally redirected to the subwoofer or floorstanding speakers by the amplifier. Its 89 dB sensitivity and 80 W power handling put it in the same ballpark as its two partners.
Its bass-reflex port opens at the rear. On a shelf or stand, it benefits from some space behind it to keep the bass clear. The EFS tweeter’s wide dispersion is an advantage here: placed to the sides or slightly behind the listeners, the BR02 speakers spread effects across the full width of the sofa rather than toward one specific spot.
Connecting the package and expanding it later
All five speakers have a nominal impedance of 8 Ω and high sensitivity, making them compatible with almost all home theater amplifiers on the market. An amplifier with at least five channels is required, plus a subwoofer output if you plan to add one. All three models have single sets of terminals, with no bi-wiring option.
The package forms a complete 5.0 system, but the Borea range offers room to grow: Triangle also offers other floorstanding and bookshelf speakers, a second center speaker and effects speakers, for setups up to 9.2.4 with height channels. All Borea speakers are available in light oak, black ash, walnut and white, with a Scandinavian look, so the system can be expanded without disrupting the living room’s visual harmony.

Frequently Asked Questions
Should I add a subwoofer to this package?
It isn’t essential to start with one. The BR09 speakers reach down to 35 Hz, and without a subwoofer, the amplifier can send them the low-frequency effects channel (the “.1” in a soundtrack). A subwoofer does, however, deliver the very lowest bass in action movies and take some of the load off the floorstanding speakers at high volume. Once it’s installed, the speakers are generally set to “small” on the amplifier, with a crossover frequency of around 80 Hz, so the subwoofer handles the entire low end.
Speakers don’t all have the same sensitivity: should you be concerned?
No. The difference between the BR09’s 92.5 dB, the BRC1’s 90 dB and the BR02’s 89 dB can be corrected by adjusting the level of each channel. The automatic calibration procedure offered by most home theater receivers, using the included microphone, takes care of this in a few minutes and also adjusts the distance settings.
Can I listen to music in stereo with this bundle?
Yes. In stereo or direct mode, the amplifier powers only the two BR09s, which then work as a full-fledged pair of hi-fi floorstanding speakers. Their dedicated midrange drivers and extended bass make them well suited to music listening, provided you position them away from the walls and form a roughly equilateral triangle with the listening position.
Are the BR09 suitable for a room smaller than 30 m²?
Triangle recommends them for rooms larger than 30 m². In a smaller room, three woofers per speaker can produce too much bass, especially if the speakers are close to walls or in corners. Moving them away from the walls and letting the amplifier’s calibration correct the room’s resonances helps limit this effect.
At what height should the BRC1 center speaker be placed?
As close to ear level as possible, just above or below the screen. If it’s placed low on a TV stand, moving it forward to the edge of the shelf prevents the stand’s surface from reflecting some of the high frequencies. You can also tilt it slightly upward so the tweeter points toward the viewers.
Where should the BR02 speakers be placed at the rear?
On either side of the sofa or slightly behind it, just above ear level. Dolby recommends an angle of around 110 to 120° relative to the screen’s axis for the surround channels in a 5.1 system. Since the port is at the back, it’s best to leave a few centimeters between the speaker and the wall.
What accessories are included with the speakers?
The BR09 speakers come with their bases, magnetic grilles, steel spikes and rubber pads. The BRC1 comes with its magnetic grille and rubber pads. Speaker cables are not included in the package.
