The Sennheiser HDV 820 is a headphone preamplifier and amplifier designed for discerning audio enthusiasts. Made in Germany, it reflects Sennheiser’s expertise in crafting high-end audio equipment.
At the heart of the HDV 820 lies a state-of-the-art ESS SABRE32 digital-to-analog converter (DAC). This premium DAC delivers an impressive 32-bit resolution and supports sampling rates up to 384 kHz for PCM signals. It also processes DSD256 files up to 12.3 MHz, ensuring compatibility with the most advanced high-resolution audio formats.
This advanced conversion technology enables the HDV 820 to deliver exceptionally clear sound, with an extended dynamic range and extremely low distortion. The result is a remarkably pure audio reproduction, capable of revealing the finest details in your favorite recordings.
The HDV 820 excels in connectivity versatility. On the input side, it offers three digital options: a USB Type B port for computer connection, an optical input, and a coaxial input. These multiple inputs make it easy to connect a wide variety of audio sources, whether it’s a CD player, a network audio player, or a computer.
For analog sources, the HDV 820 features a balanced XLR input and an unbalanced RCA input, the latter with adjustable gain. This flexibility allows seamless integration of the HDV 820 into any existing audio setup.
On the output side, the device is equally well-equipped. It includes a combined XLR3/6.3 mm headphone output with a NEUTRIK adapter, a balanced XLR4 output, and two balanced Pentaconn 4.4 mm outputs. The latter, compliant with the new JEITA standard, ensures excellent signal transmission quality for compatible headphones. A balanced XLR line output completes the package, enabling the HDV 820 to function as a preamplifier in a hi-fi system.
The HDV 820 doesn’t just offer high-quality digital-to-analog conversion; it also delivers exceptional amplification. The amplification circuit, inherited from the HDVD 800 model and optimized for this new version, provides generous power while maintaining an extremely low harmonic distortion level, below 0.001%.
With a minimum output power of 480 mW at 600 ohms, the HDV 820 can efficiently drive even the most demanding headphones. Its impressive dynamic range of over 115 dB at 600 Ω faithfully reproduces the subtlest musical nuances, from the softest passages to the most powerful crescendos.
The HDV 820 boasts a sleek and elegant design that pairs perfectly with Sennheiser’s high-end headphones, such as the HD 800 S. Its black anodized aluminum casing exudes a premium feel while providing excellent protection against electromagnetic interference.
The minimalist front panel is dominated by a large volume knob, offering precise and tactile control. Discreet white LEDs clearly indicate the device’s status and the selected source, complementing the refined aesthetic.
The HDV 820 represents a notable evolution from its predecessor, the HDVD 800. While retaining the analog system and power amplifier of the previous model, these components have been carefully optimized to deliver even better performance.
The main improvement lies in the integration of the new ESS SABRE32 DAC, which offers superior resolution and high-resolution format processing capabilities. This upgrade allows the HDV 820 to fully exploit modern high-quality audio recordings while enhancing the playback of more conventional audio sources.
The HDV 820 is designed to work with a wide range of headphones, from low-impedance models to high-impedance audiophile headphones. It is particularly optimized for Sennheiser’s HD 800 series but can excellently drive most headphones on the market.
Yes, thanks to its balanced XLR line output, the HDV 820 can be used as a high-quality preamplifier in a larger hi-fi setup.
Balanced outputs (XLR4 and Pentaconn 4.4 mm) generally offer better channel separation and increased immunity to interference, which can result in slightly superior sound quality with compatible headphones. However, the unbalanced output (6.3 mm jack) remains of very high quality and is suitable for the majority of headphones.
Yes, the HDV 820 is compatible with both operating systems via its USB connection. It may require the installation of specific drivers for optimal performance, particularly on Windows.
