Swedish manufacturer Primare, founded in 1985, has made compact formats a specialty. The SC15 Prisma condenses into an aluminum chassis three-quarters of standard width (350 mm) the functions of network player, digital-to-analog converter, and preamplifier. This “all-in-one” approach meets the demand for less bulky hi-fi systems, without sacrificing connection versatility.
A chassis designed to blend into the décor
The SC15 Prisma adopts the aesthetic codes of the Primare range: a solid aluminum front panel slightly offset from the main chassis, a design feature that has become the brand’s signature. The central, monochrome OLED screen displays playback information, the selected input, and volume level. Four discreet front buttons provide basic controls; menu navigation is done via the supplied remote control or the Prisma app. Weighing 6.4 kg and with a depth of 329 mm, the unit slips easily onto a shelf or into a cabinet.
The black finish (also available in titanium silver) follows a sober, typically Scandinavian aesthetic.
Audio conversion: AKM AK4490 chip in charge
The digital heart of the SC15 Prisma is based on an AKM AK4490 converter, a chip appreciated for its tonal balance and musicality. Conversion accepts PCM streams up to 384 kHz at 24-bit via the USB-B input, and 192 kHz/24-bit on network, optical, and coaxial inputs. The DSD format is supported up to DSD128 (5.6 MHz).
The stated measurements show a signal-to-noise ratio greater than 90 dB in digital and 80 dB in analog, with a linear frequency response from 20 Hz to 20 kHz (± 0.5 dB). The 150-ohm output impedance allows connection to most power amplifiers or active speakers.
The Prisma platform: a crossroads of protocols
The strength of the SC15 lies in its Prisma network module, which brings together the main audio streaming standards. Connection to the home network is via wired (10/100 Mbit Ethernet) or wireless (802.11ac Wi‑Fi, dual-band 2.4/5 GHz). Once connected, the device becomes accessible via AirPlay 2, Chromecast, Bluetooth, Spotify Connect, and DLNA/UPnP. Roon Ready certification (after firmware update) opens access to this particularly refined music library management interface.
The Chromecast integration deserves attention: it allows direct streaming from hundreds of compatible apps (Qobuz, Tidal, Deezer, YouTube Music…), with the stream traveling over the network rather than via Bluetooth, which preserves the service’s native resolution. Voice control via Google Assistant is also possible if a Google Home device is present on the same network.
The Prisma app, available on iOS and Android, centralizes input selection, volume control, playback from a NAS, and access to integrated streaming services (Qobuz, Tidal). The interface is understated: black background, readable typography, smooth navigation. However, it lacks the sophistication of some competing apps, a point that Primare has acknowledged and continues to improve through regular updates.
WiSA: high‑resolution wireless speakers
The SC15 Prisma includes a WiSA (Wireless Speaker and Audio) transmitter, a wireless audio transmission technology that carries up to 96 kHz/24-bit to compatible speakers. The protocol operates in the 5 GHz band with dynamic frequency selection to avoid interference, and offers virtually zero latency (less than one microsecond of inter-channel synchronization).
Pairing is done via a dedicated button on the back of the unit. Once configured, the SC15 can drive a pair of stereo speakers or a 2.1 system with subwoofer without any speaker cables. The analog RCA output remains available in parallel, configurable as a subwoofer output when the main speakers are connected via WiSA.
WiSA speakers are offered by System Audio, Buchardt Audio, Klipsch, or Bang & Olufsen. This connectivity turns the SC15 into a standalone source for a minimalist hi-fi system.
Comprehensive connectivity despite the compact size
The rear panel brings together a variety of inputs and outputs:
- Three TOSLINK optical inputs (one shared with a 3.5 mm mini-jack) and three coaxial S/PDIF inputs/outputs, useful for connecting a TV, game console, or external CD player
- One USB-B input (up to 384 kHz/24-bit, DSD128) for connection to a computer
- One USB-A input for playback from a USB stick or external drive
- One analog RCA input and output
- One RJ45 Ethernet port
Service connections complete the package: 12V trigger output, infrared input/output, and RS232 port for home automation integration.
The RCA output can be switched between variable mode (preamplifier with volume control) and fixed mode (line level for insertion into an existing system). In variable mode, the SC15 drives a power amplifier or active speakers directly.
Integration with the Primare 15 Series range
The SC15 Prisma shares its dimensions with other units in the 15 Series: the DD15 CD transport, the I15 integrated amplifier, and the R15 phono preamplifier. Stacking several components creates a visually coherent system. The DD15, which lacks a DAC section, finds a logical partner in the SC15: coaxial connection, conversion by the AK4490, output to amplification.
