Superb soundbar, with the Denon subwoofer, the sound is really good, and the Dolby Atmos is truly showcased. I highly recommend it.

Each year, dozens of European journalists gather to select the best electronic products of the year. Awarded by a diverse and impartial jury, the EISA (Expert Imaging and Sound Association) awards recognize exceptional products for their performance, design, or ergonomics.
The Denon Home 550 marks the Japanese brand’s entry into the compact multiroom soundbar segment. At 65 cm long, it incorporates nine drivers to reproduce Dolby Atmos and DTS:X formats through virtualization, while integrating into the HEOS ecosystem to stream high-resolution music throughout the home. Its reduced size and HDMI eARC connectivity make it a solution designed for 43” and larger TVs, installed in small to medium-sized rooms.
The Home 550 measures 65 cm in length, 7.5 cm in height and 12 cm in depth, sliding under most televisions without blocking the screen. Its cabinet, covered in mottled grey fabric, adopts the same aesthetic codes as the Denon Home 150, 250 and 350 speakers. Anthracite is the only finish available, with a matte surface on top to avoid screen reflections.
The touch control panel lights up when your hand approaches thanks to a proximity sensor, allowing you to adjust the volume, pause playback or mute the built-in microphones. Four damping feet stabilize the bar on a piece of furniture, while two mounting points allow wall installation using the included template.
The Home 550 houses six active speakers arranged on a single front-facing plane: two 19 mm tweeters and four 55 mm full-range drivers. Three 50 × 90 mm passive radiators (two at the front, one at the rear) reinforce the bass response without the need for a dedicated subwoofer.
Six channels of Class D digital amplification power each active driver individually. The Denon-developed digital signal processor analyzes Dolby Atmos and DTS:X streams to virtually generate height channels through algorithmic processing, without any drivers angled towards the ceiling.
The system offers seven listening modes, including Dialog Enhancer (three intensity levels to improve voice intelligibility) and Night Mode (bass attenuation and dynamic compression). The HEOS app provides a two-band equalizer to manually fine-tune the sound, with optimization carried out without an external calibration microphone.
The integration of HEOS Built-in turns the Home 550 into a multiroom audio hub capable of connecting up to 32 zones on the same home network. The soundbar can play in sync with other HEOS devices or deliver different content in each room.
The HEOS app centralizes access to streaming services (Spotify, Amazon Music HD, TIDAL, Deezer, TuneIn, Pandora) and to playback of network files via DLNA, USB flash drive, AirPlay 2 or Bluetooth 3.0. The system supports high-resolution formats: MP3/AAC up to 320 kbps, FLAC/WAV/ALAC up to 24-bit / 192 kHz, and DSD 2.8/5.6 MHz.
The three Quick Select buttons store complete presets (source, audio mode, radio station) accessible at the touch of a button, making it easy to switch quickly between different uses.
The rear panel brings together one HDMI input and one HDMI eARC/ARC output (2.0b standard) supporting 4K/60 Hz passthrough with HDCP 2.2, HDR10 and Dolby Vision. eARC carries high-definition multichannel audio from the TV through a single cable, greatly simplifying installation.
For TVs without ARC, a Toslink optical input provides a digital audio connection (limited to stereo PCM and Dolby Digital/DTS 5.1). A 3.5 mm mini-jack analog input completes the options. The USB port accepts storage drives, whose content then becomes accessible to all devices on the HEOS network.
An RJ45 Ethernet port offers an alternative to dual-band 802.11ac Wi-Fi. Voice assistant compatibility extends to Amazon Alexa (built-in after update), Apple Siri via AirPlay 2, and Google Assistant via third-party devices. Most TV remotes can also control the bar thanks to preprogrammed codes.
Wireless Denon Home 150, 250 or 350 speakers can be added as rear surround speakers, creating a 4.1 configuration (or 5.1 with the Denon Home Subwoofer). This expansion is entirely wireless via Wi-Fi, with the HEOS app managing pairing and synchronization.
Adding the subwoofer extends the low-frequency range and engages an active crossover in the Home 550, allowing higher sound levels. Tests confirm that the bar alone maintains its coherence up to around 30% of its maximum capacity, beyond which tonal balance starts to degrade.
This progressive approach allows you to start with the soundbar alone and then expand the system over time, with each addition configured via HEOS in just a few minutes. All Denon and Marantz devices equipped with HEOS Built-in can join this multiroom network.
Yes, the bar works independently as a connected speaker thanks to HEOS Built-in. It plays streaming services, network files up to 24-bit / 192 kHz and DSD 5.6 MHz, as well as content from a USB flash drive. Bluetooth and AirPlay 2 connections also allow streaming from a mobile device.
No, you can combine different Denon Home models (150, 250 or 350) as surround speakers. The HEOS app automatically manages level differences between speakers via individual volume settings. For optimal tonal consistency, using a pair of identical speakers remains preferable.
eARC delivers the best quality by transmitting lossless Atmos streams from Ultra HD Blu-ray discs. Standard ARC also works with Dolby Atmos from streaming services (Netflix, Disney+, etc.) that use Dolby Digital Plus compression. The optical input does not support 3D formats and is limited to standard Dolby Digital / DTS 5.1.

Used without the subwoofer, it lacks depth and bass in my opinion. I think it should be paired with its subwoofer.
