The HE-R10P borrows its distinctive silhouette from the mythical Sony MDR-R10 of the 1990s, whose design patents have expired, but infuses it with a radically different technical approach. Where the Japanese model relied on dynamic drivers with biocellulose diaphragms, Hifiman has applied its expertise in nanometer-thin diaphragms and next‑generation magnets.

A wooden case for planar technology

The large cups of the HE-R10P are CNC‑machined from solid wood, a material chosen as much for its acoustic properties as for its looks. The natural density of the wood helps to dampen unwanted resonances that can affect closed-back headphones, while the generous internal volume—a direct consequence of their deep, rounded shape—gives the drivers the space they need to perform without constraint.

Aerospace‑grade aluminum reinforces the structure at the hinges and mounting points, forming a visual contrast with the warmth of the wood. The headband, covered with natural lambskin over a steel core, distributes the weight across the top of the head. At 460 grams on the scale, the HE-R10P is no lightweight: extended listening sessions require a period of adjustment, even though the angled “Tranquility” earpads, filled with memory foam, mitigate the sensation of weight by distributing pressure evenly around the ears.

The diaphragm that defies convention

At the heart of the HE-R10P beats a planar magnetic driver derived from the technologies developed for the Susvara, Hifiman’s benchmark open‑back model. Its diaphragm, with a thickness measured on the nanometer scale, is crisscrossed by an extremely fine conductor array. Sandwiched between two rows of neodymium magnets in a “Stealth” configuration, it moves with a speed and precision that conventional diaphragms struggle to match.

These Stealth magnets are one of the headset’s major innovations. Their special shape, optimized through acoustic simulation, reduces diffraction effects that usually occur when sound waves encounter an obstacle. The signal reaches the ear with fewer interferences, resulting in lower distortion and increased transparency in detail rendering.

The stated frequency response extends from 10 Hz to 60 kHz, well beyond the audible spectrum. The benefit of this ultrasonic extension lies less in the direct perception of these frequencies than in the overall behavior of the driver: a system capable of cleanly reproducing signals at 60 kHz generally offers excellent linearity in the range where the human ear is most sensitive.

Powering a not‑so‑demanding closed‑back

Unlike some planar models renowned for their hunger for power, the HE-R10P features accommodating electrical characteristics. Its 30‑ohm impedance and 100 dB sensitivity make it compatible with a wide range of sources: a desktop headphone amplifier will unlock its full potential, but a good quality portable DAC/amp is enough to achieve a comfortable listening level.

This relative ease of drive also opens the door to wireless use via the Bluemini module, an optional Bluetooth adapter that clips directly under the left cup. Equipped with its own DAC and amplifier, it turns the HE-R10P into a standalone headset supporting high‑resolution codecs. An unexpected option on a headphone in this category, even if purists will naturally prefer a wired connection to get the most out of their electronics.

Three cables for every setup

Hifiman supplies the HE-R10P with a set of three single‑crystal, silver‑plated cables, each terminated on the headphone side with a balanced 3.5 mm mini‑jack connector that plugs into the left cup. The third cable, also 3 meters long, features a 4‑pin XLR plug for amplifiers with a balanced output—a configuration that can improve channel separation and reduce background noise on compatible equipment.

A closed-back sound that breathes

The closed‑back design of the HE-R10P aims to reconcile isolation and soundstage—two parameters that are usually at odds. The internal volume of the cups, far greater than that of most closed‑back headphones, creates an acoustic chamber where sound waves can develop before reaching the eardrum. The resulting soundstage is closer to that of a classic circumaural open‑back than to the intimate feeling often associated with closed designs.

The sound signature leans toward warmth, with forward mids that give voices and acoustic instruments a tangible presence. The planar bass—dense and textured—reaches deep into the low register without encroaching on the rest of the spectrum. In the highs, the reproduction remains controlled: smoothness prevails over aggressiveness, which favors long listening sessions but may seem slightly laid‑back to ears accustomed to brighter timbres.

Passive isolation, on the other hand, remains moderate.
