Eight years of research led to these closed-back headphones, which take a bold approach with planar magnetic technology. The HE-R10P borrows its distinctive silhouette from the legendary Sony MDR-R10 of the 1990s, whose design patents have expired, but brings a radically different technical approach to it. Where the Japanese model relied on dynamic drivers with biocellulose diaphragms, Hifiman applies its expertise in nanometer-thick diaphragms and next-generation magnets here.

A wooden enclosure for planar technology

The imposing ear cups of the HE-R10P are CNC-machined from solid wood, a material chosen as much for its acoustic qualities as for its aesthetics. The natural density of the wood helps dampen unwanted resonances that can affect closed-back headphones, while the generous internal volume, a direct consequence of their deep, rounded shape, gives the drivers the space they need to perform without constraint.

Aircraft-grade aluminum reinforces the structure at the hinges and mounting points, creating a visual contrast with the warmth of the wood. The headband, covered in natural lambskin over a steel base, distributes the weight across the top of the head. Weighing in at 460 grams, the HE-R10P is no lightweight: extended sessions require some adjustment, although the angled “Tranquility” ear pads filled with memory foam reduce the sense of weight by distributing pressure evenly around the ears.

The diaphragm that defies convention

At the heart of the HE-R10P is a planar magnetic driver derived from technologies developed for the Susvara, the reference open-back model in Hifiman’s lineup. Its diaphragm, with a thickness measured on the nanometer scale, carries a network of extremely fine conductors. Sandwiched between two rows of neodymium magnets in a “Stealth” configuration, it moves with a speed and precision that conventional diaphragms struggle to match.

These Stealth magnets are one of the headphones’ major innovations. Their distinctive shape, optimized through acoustic simulation, reduces the diffraction that usually occurs when sound waves encounter an obstacle. The signal reaches the ear with less interference, resulting in lower distortion and greater transparency in detail reproduction.

The stated frequency response extends from 10 Hz to 60 kHz, well beyond the audible spectrum. The benefit of this ultrasonic extension lies less in the direct perception of these frequencies than in the driver’s overall behavior: a system capable of cleanly reproducing signals at 60 kHz generally exhibits excellent linearity in the range where human hearing is most sensitive.

Driving undemanding closed-back headphones

Unlike some planar models known for their hunger for power, the HE-R10P has accommodating electrical specifications. Its 30-ohm impedance and 100 dB sensitivity make it compatible with a wide range of sources: a desktop headphone amplifier will unlock its full potential, but a well-made portable DAC/amplifier is enough to achieve a comfortable listening level.

This relative ease of driving also opens the door to wireless use via the Bluemini module, an optional Bluetooth adapter that clips directly beneath the left ear cup. Equipped with its own DAC and amplifier, it turns the HE-R10P into self-contained headphones supporting high-resolution codecs. An unexpected option for headphones in this category, although purists will naturally prefer a wired connection to get the most out of the electronics.

Three cables for every setup

Hifiman supplies the HE-R10P with a selection of three cables featuring silver-plated single-crystal conductors, each terminated at the headphone end with a balanced 3.5 mm mini-jack connector that plugs into the left ear cup. The internal wiring runs discreetly through the headband to the right driver, preserving the visual symmetry of the whole.

The 1.5-meter cable with a 3.5 mm mini-jack plug is suitable for use on the go or connection to a portable DAC. For a desktop setup, the 3-meter version terminated with a 6.35 mm jack offers greater freedom of movement. The third cable, also 3 meters long, features a four-pin XLR plug for amplifiers with a balanced output, a configuration that can improve channel separation and reduce background noise on compatible equipment.

Closed-back sound with room to breathe

The HE-R10P’s closed-back design aims to reconcile isolation and spatial presentation, two usually conflicting characteristics. The internal volume of the ear cups, much greater than that of most closed-back headphones, creates an acoustic chamber where waves can spread out before reaching the eardrum. The resulting soundstage evokes the openness of conventional over-ear headphones more than the sense of intimacy often associated with closed-back models.

The sound signature leans toward warmth, with prominent mids that give voices and acoustic instruments a tangible presence. The dense, textured planar bass extends deep into the low-frequency range without encroaching on the rest of the spectrum. In the treble, reproduction remains controlled: smoothness takes precedence over aggression, encouraging extended listening, although it may seem restrained to ears accustomed to brighter tonal qualities.

Passive isolation, however, remains moderate. The protein leather ear pads and light clamping force let some outside noise through: the HE-R10P is not designed to shut out its surroundings completely, but rather to offer a cocoon of sound in a relatively quiet home listening environment.
