Audeze LCD-X (standard case)
Overview
Since its launch in 2013, the LCD-X has established itself in recording studios around the world as an everyday work tool for mixing and mastering. This reputation is built on a neutral sound signature, virtually imperceptible distortion, and an exceptionally fast transient response. The current version, the result of multiple successive refinements, incorporates the major technical developments introduced at the end of 2020: new drivers, a redesigned magnetic system, and improved ergonomics.
Large-diameter planar magnetic drivers
The LCD-X features 106 mm planar magnetic drivers, providing a radiating surface considerably larger than that of conventional dynamic headphones. This design allows a large volume of air to be moved while keeping the diaphragm extremely light. The Uniforce diaphragms used by Audeze are just 0.5 microns thick, which is about 150 times thinner than a human hair.
The advantage of this thinness lies in transient response: the diaphragm reacts instantly to changes in the audio signal, without the inertia that characterizes heavier diaphragms. In practice, this results in precise attack on percussion and faithful reproduction of complex sounds with fast wavefronts.
The symmetrical double-sided magnetic system generates a uniform driving force over the entire diaphragm. Unlike dynamic drivers, where the voice coil pushes the diaphragm from its center, the force here is applied evenly across the entire surface. This design directly contributes to the total harmonic distortion rate of under 1% claimed across the entire audible spectrum.
Fazor: waveguides for optimized phase coherence
The Fazor elements are one of Audeze’s most significant proprietary technologies. These waveguides, positioned on either side of the magnets, direct the sound waves to avoid the interference and diffraction that normally occur when sound passes through the magnetic structure.
The principle is similar to ripples in a pond: when multiple sources emit simultaneously, the waves can cancel or reinforce each other unpredictably depending on where they meet. Fazors channel the acoustic flow so that the various frequencies reach the ear with coherent time alignment.
The result is particularly noticeable in midrange clarity and stereo imaging precision. The soundstage becomes more intelligible, with each instrument occupying a distinct position in space. This characteristic partly explains the LCD-X’s adoption by sound engineers who need to locate each element of a complex mix with certainty.
Unusually high efficiency for a planar headphone
With an impedance of 20 Ω and a sensitivity of 103 dB/1 mW, the LCD-X clearly stands out from most planar magnetic headphones, which are traditionally more power-hungry. These specifications allow it to be used directly from an audio interface, mixing console, or even a portable player, without a dedicated amplifier.
This efficiency results from careful optimization of the Fluxor magnetic circuit, which concentrates the magnetic flux toward the diaphragm instead of dispersing it. Audeze has thus maintained a high flux density without stacking additional magnets, which would have increased the overall weight.
That said, the LCD-X fully benefits from a quality headphone amplifier. The recommended output power ranges from 1 to 4 W, which corresponds to the output of most desktop headphone amplifiers. Beyond sheer volume, a well-matched amplification stage improves bass control and overall dynamics.
Build quality and long-term comfort
The LCD-X weighs in at 612 grams, a direct consequence of its robust anodized aluminum construction and large drivers. To offset this mass, Audeze has adopted a suspended headband that distributes the weight across the top of the head without creating localized pressure points.
The lambskin earpads are generously sized and feature an angled shape that creates a substantial acoustic space around the ear. This distance between the outer ear and the diaphragm contributes to the perceived expansiveness of the soundstage. The foams used in the current version have been reformulated to provide immediate elastic recovery rather than the gradual compression of memory foam.
The open-back design lets air and sound pass freely in both directions. Isolation from the outside environment is therefore limited, and people nearby will hear part of what you are listening to. This deliberate compromise prioritizes a sense of space and balanced acoustic pressure on both sides of the diaphragm, enhancing comfort during long listening sessions.
Connectivity and included accessories
The cable supplied with this standard edition uses high-purity OCC (Ohno Continuous Cast) copper, braided and sheathed to withstand daily handling. On the headphone side, it uses two 4-pin mini-XLR connectors, firmly secured to the earcups via a screwed connection. On the source side, the cable terminates in a 4-pin XLR connector, accompanied by a 6.35 mm jack adapter that covers most studio or home setups.
The standard carrying case included in this package offers adequate protection for transport and storage. It is a semi-rigid case with internal padding, sufficient for everyday use without reaching the protection level of a professional flight case.
Software customization with Reveal+
Audeze optionally offers the Reveal+ plugin, compatible with most digital audio workstations and software players. This module serves two distinct purposes: first, to apply a correction curve specific to the headphone model in use, in order to approximate a studio monitor target response; and second, to create a personalized HRTF profile from a photograph of the user’s ear.
The Aural Map technology, developed in partnership with Embody, analyzes the geometry of the outer ear to model how each individual perceives spatial localization of sounds. The aim is to more faithfully reproduce the sensation of listening to speakers in an acoustically treated room.
This plugin is not essential for using the LCD-X, which works perfectly without any software processing. It is an additional tool for those who wish to fine-tune the reproduction according to their preferences or specific professional requirements.
Frequency response and acoustic behavior
The stated frequency range extends from 5 Hz to 50 kHz, with a guaranteed response from 5 Hz to 20 kHz. The sub-bass frequencies go low enough to reproduce the deepest fundamentals of a pipe organ or the sub-bass of modern electronic productions. The extension into the treble beyond the audible spectrum helps preserve harmonics and contributes to a natural feel on acoustic timbres.
The maximum sound pressure level exceeds 130 dB at 15 W, a power reserve that leaves comfortable headroom for the most demanding dynamic passages without compression or clipping. In practice, these extreme levels are never reached during normal listening, but they demonstrate the driver’s ability to handle peaks effortlessly.
The overall tonal balance of the LCD-X is characterized by deliberate neutrality, with a slight warmth in the low mids that avoids the clinical coldness sometimes associated with monitoring headphones. The highs remain present and detailed without harshness, allowing for long listening sessions without listening fatigue.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does the LCD-X require a dedicated headphone amplifier?
No. Its 20 Ω impedance and 103 dB/1 mW sensitivity allow it to operate properly from the headphone output of an audio interface, a DAP, or even a recent smartphone. A dedicated amplifier can nonetheless provide extra bass control and better handling of macro-dynamics, which is particularly appreciable on highly dynamic recordings.
What is the difference between the standard package and the premium package?
The standard package includes the 4-pin XLR cable with 6.35 mm jack adapter and the semi-rigid carrying case. The premium package adds a second balanced-termination cable and a reinforced Pelican-type carrying case, better suited to frequent travel or demanding transport conditions.
Are the earpads replaceable?
Yes, but replacing them requires some care, as they are glued to the earcups. Audeze offers replacement earpads in leather or synthetic material. The choice of material can slightly alter the acoustic rendering, particularly in the low end and treble attenuation.
Is the LCD-X suitable for studio recording?
Its open-back design lets sound leak outwards, which can be picked up by a nearby microphone. For vocal or acoustic instrument recording, the closed-back LCD-XC model offers better isolation. For mixing, mastering, or reference listening, however, the open design provides comfort and spatialization that are generally preferred.
Is the Reveal+ plugin compatible with all playback software?
Reveal+ works with software that supports VST, AU, or AAX plugins. This includes major digital audio workstations such as Pro Tools, Logic, Ableton Live, Reaper, as well as players like JRiver, Audirvana, or Foobar2000. Mainstream streaming platforms (Spotify, Apple Music) do not allow third-party plugins to be inserted.
How can I identify a 2021 or later LCD-X?
Units produced after November 2020 show several visual differences: metal grills instead of fabric, a suspension headband, and six Fazor elements instead of eight on earlier versions. The serial number on the warranty card can also be used to confirm the generation with Audeze support.
