Jolida Music Envoy: Tube Preamplifier
Four tubes, three dedicated power supplies, a complete phono stage: this preamplifier concentrates the expertise acquired by Jolida since 1983 in the design of tube electronics. The Music Envoy occupies the top of the American manufacturer’s range and embodies its design philosophy where the robustness of power supplies directly determines the quality of sound reproduction.
An Architecture Designed for Stage Isolation
Jolida’s approach to the Music Envoy is based on multiple independent power supplies. Three separate power supply circuits each serve a gain stage, while a fourth power supply is entirely dedicated to the phono section. This separation aims to prevent interactions between stages and maintain sufficient current reserve during demanding musical passages.
The preamplification circuit is built around four tubes: two 12AX7 and two 12AT7. These classic references, widely available from numerous manufacturers, facilitate replacement or experimentation with different brands according to listening preferences. The tubes are individually shielded to limit radio frequency interference and mechanical vibrations that could introduce noise into the signal.
A Configurable Phono Stage for MM and MC Cartridges
The Music Envoy’s phono section stands out for its flexibility. Compatible with both moving magnet and moving coil cartridges, it offers gain, capacitance, and load settings accessible via DIP switches located on the rear panel. A diagram engraved on the panel indicates the positions corresponding to different cartridge types.
This section occupies its own fully shielded metal sub-chassis, a precaution that helps maintain a very low noise floor despite the high gains required for MC cartridges. The signal-to-noise ratio exceeding 100 dB and harmonic distortion below 0.03% demonstrate the care given to this part of the circuit. For systems not using a turntable, the phono input can be disabled and converted to an additional line input.
Connectivity and Remote Control
The rear panel features four RCA line inputs as well as the dedicated phono input. On the output side, three connectors are available: two at fixed level for power amplifiers and one variable level output, practical for driving an active subwoofer or a particularly sensitive amplifier.
The motorized volume potentiometer on the front panel, ALPS type, responds to the supplied remote control. The remote also allows source selection and standby mode. A 12V Trigger connector enables synchronized triggering of compatible amplifiers.
Matching and Implementation
Jolida initially designed this preamplifier as the companion to the Music Envoy 211 tube monoblocks, but its 60-ohm output impedance and 100 kΩ input impedance allow it to work with most power amplifiers, whether tube or solid-state. The frequency response extends from 10 Hz to 100 kHz with a tolerance of ± 1 dB, giving it comfortable headroom at both ends of the spectrum.
The tube warm-up time remains modest (a few minutes are sufficient to reach nominal operating temperature), and power consumption remains reasonable for a device in this category.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use the Music Envoy with a solid-state amplifier?
Yes, the pairing works perfectly. The 60-ohm output impedance easily drives solid-state amplifier inputs, which generally have high input impedance. Some actually appreciate this type of combination to associate the texture of tubes with the bass control characteristic of transistors.
Are 12AX7 and 12AT7 tubes easy to find?
These are two of the most common references in the tube amplification world. They are available from numerous manufacturers (JJ, Electro-Harmonix, Mullard, Tung-Sol, etc.) as well as on the used market for vintage versions. This availability facilitates long-term maintenance and allows experimentation with different sonic signatures.
Is the phono input suitable for very low output cartridges?
The phono stage offers several gain levels and can accommodate MC cartridges with moderate output. For models with very low output (below 0.3 mV), a dedicated external phono preamplifier may offer a better signal-to-noise ratio, even though the Music Envoy proves remarkably quiet for a device integrating this function.
Does the remote control only control volume?
No, it also allows selection of input sources and putting the unit in standby mode. The 12V Trigger connector adds the ability to synchronize the power on and off of compatible power amplifiers.
Should I leave the unit on permanently or turn it off after each listening session?
Both approaches are possible. Some prefer to leave the unit powered on to avoid repeated thermal cycles on the tubes; others systematically turn it off for economy or longevity concerns. A common compromise is to turn on the preamplifier about fifteen minutes before listening to allow it to reach thermal stability.
Can the variable level output be used to drive headphones?
This output is not designed to directly drive headphones. Its impedance and output level are suitable for amplifier inputs or active subwoofers, but a dedicated headphone amplifier remains necessary for this type of use.
