The Anthem MCA 325 GEN 2 is a three-channel amplifier developed after fifteen years of lineup evolution. It adopts a completely rethought architecture compared with the previous generation. Designed and assembled in Canada, it delivers 225 watts per channel into 8 ohms with a total harmonic distortion of 0.001% at 1 kHz. Its 120 dB signal-to-noise ratio lowers the noise floor, enabling precise, detailed sound reproduction.
A ground-up redesign
The MCA 325 GEN 2 comes in an elegant black chassis with generous dimensions of 439 mm wide, 169 mm high, and 460 mm deep, weighing 19 kg. This substantial mass reflects the build quality, notably its custom toroidal transformers and oversized aluminum heatsinks. The front panel features a distinctive grille revealing the ALM (Advanced Load Monitoring) LED indicators, while the overall design pairs perfectly with the brand’s AVM processors.
The most significant change from the previous generation lies in the drastic reduction of internal wiring. Anthem meticulously redesigned the circuits to create a signal path that is considerably shorter and more direct. This minimalist approach eliminates potential interference and preserves signal integrity from input to output terminals. The new low-flux toroidal transformers, specially designed for this series, minimize electromagnetic interference while providing stable, abundant power.
The input transistors were rigorously selected for low noise and exceptional linearity. Coupled with high-current bipolar output transistors, they form an amplification chain capable of handling the most complex musical passages with striking transparency. Premium filter capacitors and advanced power regulators complete this architecture, ensuring absolute stability even under extreme power demands.
Technical performance and drive capability
The MCA 325 GEN 2’s power scales remarkably with different impedances: 225 watts into 8 ohms, 400 watts into 4 ohms, and 600 watts into 2 ohms, all continuous across 20 Hz - 20 kHz. This near-doubling of power with each halving of impedance demonstrates a robust power supply and perfectly specified output stages. Frequency response maintains ±0.1 dB accuracy into 8 and 4 ohms, reflecting exemplary linearity across the entire audible spectrum.
A 30 V/μs slew rate ensures blistering transient response, while power bandwidth extends to 90 kHz at -3 dB. In practice, these specs yield faithful reproduction of percussive attacks, precise articulation in fast passages, and a palpable sense of unbridled dynamics. Channel separation exceeding 65 dB between 100 Hz and 10 kHz ensures a perfectly defined stereo image, with each channel maintaining its integrity without crosstalk.
A voltage gain of 29 dB and an input sensitivity of 1.5 Vrms to reach rated power provide optimal compatibility with most preamplifiers and processors on the market. Input impedance of 10 kΩ on RCA and 15 kΩ on XLR presents a negligible load to source outputs.
ALM technology: intelligent protection without compromise
Anthem’s exclusive ALM (Advanced Load Monitoring) technology represents a sophisticated approach to circuit protection. Unlike traditional fuses that abruptly interrupt the signal, ALM continuously monitors temperature, current, and voltage non-invasively. This system remains completely out of the signal path, thereby preserving sonic integrity.
ALM intervenes only under extreme conditions, instantly protecting the amplifier and connected speakers without nuisance tripping of line fuses. This new generation of ALM significantly reduces the risk of the main fuse blowing during current peaks, enabling worry-free use even with difficult loads. LED indicators visible through the front grille confirm real-time operating status for complete peace of mind.
Connectivity and system integration
The rear panel offers comprehensive connectivity with three balanced XLR inputs and three unbalanced RCA inputs, allowing maximum flexibility according to system setup. The new speaker binding posts, wider and more conductive than on the previous generation, accept large-gauge cables and maintain a firm, durable connection. These custom posts were specifically developed to maximize contact area and minimize connection resistance.
The amplifier features a sophisticated trigger system with 12V trigger input and output, enabling seamless integration into complex home theater installations. Three power-on modes are available: manual via the front switch, automatic via signal sensing, or trigger-controlled. Automatic signal detection wakes the amplifier from standby as soon as an audio signal is detected, then returns it to standby after a period of inactivity.
Energy efficiency and eco-friendly evolution
Standby consumption of just 1.4 watts is a substantial improvement over traditional amplifiers in this class. In normal idle operation, power draw remains contained at 47 watts, demonstrating circuit efficiency. An average of 350 watts in typical use and a maximum of 750 watts at full power illustrate optimized energy management without sacrificing performance.
This increased efficiency results from overall circuit optimization and reduced inrush current at power-up. The new-generation toroidal transformers also contribute through higher efficiency and minimal magnetic losses.
