The Triangle Borea BRA1 speakers offer a clever solution for enhancing an existing home theater setup. Sold in pairs, these effect speakers stand out for their dual function: they can serve as Dolby Atmos speakers when placed vertically or as traditional surround speakers when wall-mounted. This versatility, combined with adjustable filtering and seamless integration into the Borea range, makes them a relevant choice for anyone looking to access current 3D audio formats without overhauling their system.
The BRA1’s trapezoidal shape, with its slanted front panel, follows a precise acoustic logic. In Atmos mode, when placed on top of main speakers, they project sound toward the ceiling to create height effects through reflection. In wall-mounted configuration, this angle directs sound toward the listening area for traditional surround use.
The filter selector at the terminal block enables this dual use with two response curves: linear for direct emission, and treble-compensated for ceiling reflection. This technical detail, often overlooked elsewhere, demonstrates a thoughtful approach to the challenges of reflection speakers.
Triangle uses the proven transducers from the Borea line. The 25 mm EFS fabric dome tweeter features the signature double-flared diffuser, improving dispersion. The 16 cm cellulose pulp mid-bass driver—a generous diameter for this category—allows extension down to 90 Hz.
The compact cabinet (206 x 180 x 300 mm) maintains Borea’s construction standards with four available finishes. Removable magnetic grilles protect the drivers while preserving aesthetics.
The BRA1 can be placed directly on the BR03, BR07, BR08, BR09, and BR10 models, with carefully designed stability. Possible configurations range from 3.1.2 to 9.2.4, allowing for progressive system upgrades.
Tonal consistency with other Borea models ensures appreciable homogeneity when effects move through space, avoiding the sonic breaks that betray composite systems.
Founded in 1980 by Renaud de Vergnette in Soissons, Triangle has been developing its own drivers since 1985. This complete mastery of design enables innovations such as the patented SPEC system.
After a period of partial outsourcing, Triangle has relocated assembly of its mid-range and high-end lines back to Soissons. The Borea range, launched in 2019 and awarded the EISA 2020-2021 prize, brings proven technologies to a wider audience.
Technically, the BRA1 can be used with any speakers that have a sufficiently flat top surface (for Atmos mode) or can be wall-mounted independently. However, aesthetic harmony and, above all, tonal consistency will be optimal with other Borea models that share the same transducers.
The “reflection” mode is used when the BRA1 are aimed at the ceiling (Atmos configuration on main speakers). The “direct” mode is suitable for wall-mounted surround installation. The selector automatically compensates for the acoustic characteristics of each setup. An incorrect setting will result in sound that is either too dull (direct mode in Atmos configuration) or too bright (reflection mode in wall-mounted setup).
Although equipped with an unusually large 16 cm woofer for their category, the BRA1 are still designed for effects reproduction. Their limited bass extension down to 90 Hz and power handling of 80 watts make them best suited for supplementary use. For main stereo use, even in a small space, the BR02 or BR03 from the same range are more appropriate choices.
