Each year, dozens of European journalists gather to select the best electronic products of the year. Awarded by a diverse and impartial jury, the EISA (Expert Imaging and Sound Association) awards recognize exceptional products for their performance, design, or ergonomics.
The Polk Audio R900 is a Dolby Atmos-compatible speaker designed to enhance home theater setups with immersive vertical sound effects. It supports 3D audio formats like Dolby Atmos and DTS:X, delivering precise and detailed sound reproduction.
The R900 stands out for its versatile installation options. It can be placed directly on compatible Polk Reserve tower speakers (R500, R600, R700) to project sound toward the ceiling, creating a reflective effect. Alternatively, it can be wall-mounted using its integrated mounting system, allowing for direct sound effects aimed at the listeners. A switch on the back of the speaker optimizes the equalization based on the chosen installation mode.
This flexibility makes the R900 adaptable to various room configurations, even those with unconventional or sloped ceilings. Regardless of the method, the goal remains the same: to create a true three-dimensional sound bubble where effects seem to come from all directions, including overhead.
At the heart of the R900 is Polk Audio’s new 19 mm Pinnacle tweeter. Developed through over 40 years of research and development, this ring radiator tweeter delivers precise and transparent high-frequency reproduction. Its finely tuned waveguide significantly improves sound dispersion, creating a wider sweet spot. The heavily damped rear chamber of the tweeter helps eliminate unwanted resonances.
The Pinnacle tweeter works in tandem with a 10 cm mid/bass driver featuring Polk’s exclusive Turbine Cone. This innovative cone combines a foam core with a turbine-shaped design to enhance rigidity and sonic neutrality without adding weight to the driver. The result is natural and detailed midrange reproduction, a frequency range to which the human ear is particularly sensitive.
The R900 is designed to integrate perfectly into a Polk Reserve home theater setup. By using the same speaker technologies (Pinnacle tweeter and Turbine Cone) as the other speakers in the range, it ensures optimal tonal consistency. This uniformity is crucial for creating a cohesive and immersive soundstage.
With a frequency response ranging from 70 Hz to 32 kHz (-3 dB) and a power handling capacity of 45 to 100 watts, the R900 pairs easily with most modern home theater amplifiers. Its sensitivity of 85.5 dB (2.83 V / 1 m) ensures good efficiency, even with moderately powered amplifiers.
The R900’s walnut finish gives it a subtle elegance that blends seamlessly into most interiors. Its compact dimensions (166 x 158 x 320 mm) and lightweight design (3 kg) make installation easy, whether on a tower speaker or mounted on a wall.
The speaker cabinet is engineered to minimize vibrations and distortion, ensuring pure and uncolored sound reproduction. A magnetic fabric grille is included to protect the drivers and provide a more understated appearance if desired.
The R900 excels in reproducing the vertical sound effects of Dolby Atmos and DTS:X soundtracks. Airplanes truly seem to fly overhead, and rain appears to fall from the ceiling. This ability to create a genuine three-dimensional sound bubble transforms the viewing experience, bringing the ambiance of your living room closer to that of a premium cinema.
The precision and clarity offered by the R900 are not limited to spectacular effects. Subtle atmospheres and fine sound details are rendered accurately, enhancing immersion in quieter scenes. This versatility makes the R900 a valuable asset for all types of content, from action-packed blockbusters to intimate dramas.
For a basic Dolby Atmos setup, it is recommended to use at least two R900 speakers. However, for optimal immersion, a four-speaker configuration (two at the front and two at the rear) will provide an even more enveloping experience.
Yes, the R900 is also compatible with DTS:X, DTS:X Virtual, Dolby Atmos Height Virtualization Technology, IMAX Enhanced, and Auro-3D. It is thus compatible with most current 3D audio technologies.
While technically possible, the R900 is not designed to be used as a main stereo speaker. It is optimized for reproducing height effects in a multichannel home theater system. For stereo listening, traditional bookshelf or tower speakers are recommended.
No, the R900 can be used with most modern Dolby Atmos-compatible home theater amplifiers. Just ensure that your amplifier can handle a minimum impedance of 4 Ω and provide power between 45 and 100 W per channel.
For placement on front speakers, ensure the R900 is centered and directed toward the listening area. If wall-mounted, ideally position them about one-third of the way down the wall from the ceiling. In all cases, don’t forget to adjust the switch on the back of the speaker according to the chosen installation mode.

No separation of sound if you place them on top of primary L/R speakers, makes a little difference on the high wall front.
