This closed-back version follows the same sound philosophy that made the series famous, while providing the acoustic isolation needed for listening in shared environments. The 106 mm planar driver, without Fazor technology, preserves a warm, musical sound signature that is particularly appreciated by long-time enthusiasts.

Planar technology rooted in its origins

The LCD-2 Classic Closed Back uses a 106 mm planar magnetic driver, with an active surface area of nearly 40 cm². This ultra-thin diaphragm, driven by high-quality neodymium magnets arranged in an offset double-sided array, reproduces audio signals with total harmonic distortion below 0.1% at 100 dB. The frequency response extends from 10 Hz to 50 kHz, covering the entire audible spectrum with comfortable headroom at both extremes.

The absence of Fazor waveguides sets this model apart from more recent versions in the LCD range. This technical choice, inherited from the first generations of the LCD-2, gives the headphone a naturally warm tonality and particularly rich midrange presentation. The deep, articulated bass characteristic of the Californian brand is very much present, while the treble remains detailed without harshness.

Closed construction and acoustic isolation

The marbled-effect earcups of the LCD-2 Classic Closed Back provide effective isolation from ambient noise. This closed-back design slightly changes the acoustic behaviour compared to the open version: the bass gains in impact and presence, while the soundstage, though less airy than with an open-back design, retains remarkable depth and width for a closed-back headphone.

The thick, firm, angled protein leather earpads surround the ear without compressing it. The ventilated suspension headband distributes the weight across the top of the head, reducing the perception of the headphone’s 612-gram mass. This two-level system—a flexible support strap under a rigid metal frame—allows for extended listening sessions despite the considerable overall weight.

Amplification requirements and connectivity

With an impedance of 70 Ω and a sensitivity of 97 dB/mW, the LCD-2 Classic Closed Back requires serious amplification to fully express its potential. The minimum power recommended by the manufacturer is 100 mW, with an optimal value around 250 mW. The headphone can handle up to 5 W RMS without complaint, offering substantial dynamic headroom with powerful amplifiers.

The package includes a 1.9-meter cable terminated in a 4-pin XLR, along with an adapter to 6.35 mm jack and a second adapter to 3.5 mm mini-jack. The connections to the earcups use locking mini-XLRs, a robust standard that facilitates cable replacement or customization. The passive isolation of the LCD-2 Classic Closed Back makes it suitable for use in shared spaces, whether in an office, a recording studio during tracking sessions, or simply in a living room where others are going about their activities. Sound leakage to the outside remains moderate at reasonable listening volumes.

The headphone’s warm and non-fatiguing sound makes it particularly suitable for long music listening sessions. Older recordings or slightly rough masterings are rendered with forgiveness, while well-produced material reveals its full harmonic richness. The forgiving nature of the sound signature does not prevent faithful reproduction of instrumental and vocal timbres.
