The Rega Fono MM MK5 is a phono preamplifier designed for moving magnet cartridges. This fifth version retains the electronic circuit already used in previous models, while adopting a new chassis designed to facilitate its integration into current hi-fi systems.

With its compact dimensions of 180 × 50 × 155 mm, the preamplifier easily finds its place in any configuration, even the most restricted ones.
The clean front panel reveals no controls, in keeping with Rega’s philosophy of prioritizing ease of use. The RCA connections at the rear accommodate cables from the turntable and to the amplifier. The supplied external PS1 power supply, delivering 24V AC, helps isolate the audio circuits from mains-related disturbances. This physical separation between power supply and signal processing circuits helps preserve the integrity of the musical message.
The internal construction reveals a meticulous approach in the choice and arrangement of components. Rather than using generic integrated circuits, Rega has opted for a discrete component architecture, individually selected for their sonic characteristics and low noise level. Rega has chosen to divide this equalization into two distinct stages, thus minimizing interactions between different frequency bands. The frequency response extends from 15 Hz (-3 dB) to 100 kHz (-0.2 dB) with a 50 kΩ load, far exceeding the audible spectrum. This extended bandwidth ensures faithful reproduction of transients and preserves the temporal coherence of the signal. The standard input impedance of 47 kΩ in parallel with 100 pF corresponds to established standards for MM cartridges, ensuring optimal loading for the majority of available models.

The first commercial version, released in 2003, already laid the foundations of the concept with its discrete component architecture. The MK3, launched in 2016, retained most of the electronic circuit while adopting a new chassis with rounded lines.
The transition to the MK4 and MK5 primarily marks an aesthetic evolution, with the electronic circuits remaining identical between these two versions. Rega engineers, after years of comparative listening and meticulous optimization, have found a sonic balance they consider optimal for this price range.
