Astell&Kern Pathfinder

Overview
Second fruit of the collaboration between the Korean audiophile player manufacturer and the Californian in-ear artisan, the Pathfinder takes up the torch from the Solaris X with a completely redesigned architecture. Six drivers per side, an innovative balanced armature technology developed by Knowles, and attention to detail that extends to the included accessories: this piece hand-assembled in Campfire Audio’s Portland workshop displays technical ambitions worthy of its high-end positioning.
A three-way hybrid assembly
The Pathfinder is based on a three-way configuration combining two types of complementary drivers. The bass frequencies and part of the midrange are handled by two 10mm dynamic drivers with hybrid PU + LCP diaphragms, housed in a 3D-printed acoustic chamber. This chamber incorporates the Radial Venting technology developed by Campfire Audio, which evacuates the air pressure generated by the diaphragm movement to preserve speed and precision of response in the lower spectrum.
The midrange benefits from an innovative driver: a dual-chamber balanced armature designed by Knowles specifically for this model. Its operating principle is similar to that of a twin-cylinder engine, where a single coil drives two separate diaphragms each housed in its own chamber. This design achieves superior efficiency in a reduced footprint, while promoting a warmer and more natural reproduction of voices and midrange instruments.
The treble is handled by two dual balanced armatures combined with the T.A.E.C. (Tuned Acoustic Expansion Chamber) system. This tuned expansion chamber, a Campfire Audio signature, replaces traditional tubes and damping filters with a calibrated air volume in front of the driver, which preserves clarity and extension in the upper spectrum while limiting listening fatigue.
Construction and ergonomics
The machined aluminum shells receive a black anodized treatment called “Night Sky”. Their rounded shape is inherited from the Solaris, but in more compact proportions despite the number of drivers on board. The weight remains contained at 8 grams per earpiece, which contributes to stable wearing without a feeling of heaviness.
The brushed stainless steel faceplate features a six-facet pattern named “Mountain Peak”, which echoes the angular lines of Astell&Kern players. These facets are produced individually then assembled to create a characteristic play of light and shadow. The nozzles, also in stainless steel, are hand-polished and feature a grille with eight circular openings. Their fairly generous diameter (approximately 6mm) requires finding the right tips among the eleven pairs provided.
The MMCX connectors use a copper-beryllium alloy more resistant to wear than the usual brass, ensuring better longevity of connections after multiple cable plugging and unplugging.
Three cables for extended compatibility
The box includes three silver-plated copper cables, terminated respectively in 3.5mm jack, 2.5mm balanced and 4.4mm Pentaconn. This provision allows the Pathfinder to be used with virtually all players and amplifiers on the market without additional purchase.
These cables adopt an original flat design where the four conductors run side by side rather than braided. This arrangement limits tangling and reduces friction noise (microphonics) when the cable brushes against clothing. The flexible coating and metal overmolding of the connectors complete a careful construction.
Sound signature and pairings
With an impedance of 6.2 Ω and a sensitivity of 94 dB at 1 kHz, the Pathfinder proves easy to drive in terms of volume, but fully reveals its qualities with sources having low output impedance. Astell&Kern players or quality desktop amplifiers constitute natural partners to take advantage of its resolution.
The reproduction favors balance between registers with a slight boost in the bass, which brings body and impact without encroaching on the midrange. The vocal range maintains a strong presence, while the treble, crisp and detailed, can be demanding with lower quality recordings. The soundstage offers good width and clear separation of instruments, with a sense of proximity reminiscent of closed-back headphone listening.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does the Pathfinder require a dedicated amplifier?
Its 94 dB sensitivity and low 6.2 Ω impedance allow sufficient volume to be achieved with most portable sources. However, sources with high output impedance can alter the tonal balance. An audiophile player or DAC/amp with output impedance close to zero remains recommended for optimal reproduction.
How to choose among the different tips provided?
The Final Audio Type E tips offer a good balance between isolation and sonic neutrality. The Marshmallow foam tips increase isolation and slightly soften the treble, which may be suitable if you find the upper spectrum too present. The classic silicone tips constitute an intermediate option. Since the nozzle diameter is quite wide, you can try a size smaller than your usual choice for deeper positioning.
Which cable to use among the three provided?
The choice depends on your source: the 3.5mm suits smartphones and standard headphone outputs, the 2.5mm and 4.4mm suit balanced outputs of audiophile players. Balanced connection can offer better channel separation and a lower noise floor depending on the device used.
Does the Pathfinder isolate well from ambient noise?
The closed design and in-ear insertion provide decent passive attenuation of external noise, without reaching the isolation level of models with finer nozzles or deep foam tips. The isolation remains sufficient for focused listening in a moderately noisy environment.
Are the cables interchangeable with other MMCX earphones?
Yes, MMCX connectors are standardized. The provided cables can be used with other MMCX-compatible earphones, and conversely, the Pathfinder accepts third-party cables with the same standard.
Does the 5 Hz to 20 kHz frequency response cover the entire audible spectrum?
This range exceeds the limits of standard human hearing (20 Hz to 20 kHz) towards the bottom, which reflects the ability of dynamic drivers to reproduce sub-bass. In practice, this manifests as a sensation of depth and foundation in the bass rather than directly perceptible frequencies.
