The Sonos Era 100 marks a turning point in the Californian manufacturer’s range of compact speakers. Designed to replace the popular Sonos One after nearly a decade of service, these speakers, offered here as a set of two units, radically transform the brand’s sonic proposition with true stereo reproduction, expanded connectivity, and thoroughly reimagined acoustic performance.
The Sonos Era 100 abandons the monophonic reproduction of its predecessor in favor of a sophisticated stereophonic configuration. Two tweeters positioned at calculated angles create a distinct left-right separation, generating a wider soundstage even from a single speaker. This layout enables optimized dispersion of high frequencies thanks to custom waveguides that project sound in a controlled manner into the space.
The mid-woofer, now 25% larger than that of the Sonos One, adopts an oval shape that allows better reproduction of vocal frequencies and deep bass. This increase in radiating surface translates to greater air displacement capability, delivering more substantial bass at all volume levels.
Three Class D amplifiers drive each transducer independently. This configuration allows precise control of each acoustic element, optimizing frequency response and minimizing distortion. The 1.9 GHz Quad Core processor, 47% faster than the previous generation, handles signal processing with minimal latency, accompanied by a neural coprocessor dedicated to voice assistant functions and automatic calibration.
Measuring 182.5 mm high, 120 mm wide, and 130.5 mm deep, the Era 100 gains about two centimeters in height compared to the One. This increase in volume, far from gratuitous, accommodates the more complex acoustic architecture. The slightly ovalized cylindrical shape replaces the rounded-corner square of the previous generation, creating a more organic silhouette.
The wraparound acoustic grille now extends to the edges of the chassis, creating visual continuity without breaks. The matte finish, available in black or white, resists fingerprints while maintaining a pleasant texture to the touch. The rubber base ensures exemplary stability while decoupling the speaker from its support to minimize parasitic vibrations.
The top panel features a central groove allowing smooth volume adjustment by sliding your finger—an ergonomic improvement over the simple volume buttons of the previous generation. Playback, pause, and navigation controls remain accessible via responsive, precise capacitive touch zones.
After years of reluctance, Sonos finally integrates Bluetooth 5.3 into its home speakers. This addition allows a direct connection from any compatible device without going through the Wi-Fi network. The SBC and AAC codecs ensure universal compatibility, although the absence of high-definition codecs like aptX or LDAC remains regrettable for the most demanding users.
The pairing process, initiated by pressing and holding the dedicated button on the back of the speaker, proves remarkably simple and stable. Once connected, the Bluetooth device can serve as a bridge to stream music to other Sonos speakers on the home network.
The USB-C port replaces the traditional Ethernet connection, offering increased versatility via optional adapters. The auxiliary line adapter (sold separately) lets you connect a turntable with a built-in phono preamp, a CD player, or any other analog source. The combined adapter simultaneously offers an auxiliary input and an Ethernet connection for installations requiring a wired network connection.
Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) compatibility ensures sufficient bandwidth for high-resolution audio streaming up to 24-bit. Native Apple AirPlay 2 integration makes it easy to stream from iOS devices, while Spotify Connect allows direct control from the Spotify app. Support for more than one hundred streaming services ensures near-universal compatibility with today’s music platforms.
A major innovation of the Era range, Quick Tuning uses the speaker’s built-in microphones to analyze the room’s acoustics in about 30 seconds. This feature, available to both Android and iOS users, finally democratizes acoustic calibration previously reserved for Apple device owners.
The process analyzes sound reflections on walls, furniture, and other surfaces to automatically adjust the equalization. The changes made compensate for unwanted resonances and optimize frequency response according to the speaker’s placement.
iOS users retain access to advanced calibration using their mobile device’s microphone. This more precise method requires walking around the room while test signals are played, creating a three-dimensional acoustic map of the space. The result offers finer optimization, particularly beneficial in large rooms or acoustically complex spaces.
The two Era 100 speakers in this set can be configured as a stereo pair via the Sonos app, radically transforming the listening experience. In this configuration, each speaker reproduces only one channel (left or right), with its two tweeters working together to create a coherent and precise soundstage.
The recommended spacing of 2.5 to 3 meters between the speakers, combined with a similar listening distance, forms an optimal equilateral triangle for stereophonic perception. Perfect synchronization between the two units, managed by Sonos’s proprietary protocol, eliminates any perceptible time lag.
When paired with a Sonos soundbar (Ray, Beam, Arc or Arc Ultra), the Era 100 pair can serve as surround speakers. In this configuration, they add a spatial dimension to audiovisual content, creating an enveloping sound bubble. The surround mode can be adjusted between “ambient” for subtle effect reproduction or “full” for a more assertive presence, particularly appreciated for music listening.
The Sonos Era 100 offers several significant improvements over the Sonos One, including a midwoofer for mid-range frequencies that is 25% larger than before, and a second tweeter, which allows for stereo sound. I was impressed by the quality of the Era 100. I listened to it less than the Era 300, but I'm very familiar with the Sonos One, and the improvement is considerable. You can hear it from the very first notes. In a small room, the Era 100 could certainly be sufficient for me, even for extended listening.
The Era 100 offers stereophonic reproduction thanks to its two angled tweeters, unlike the monophonic Sonos One. It also includes Bluetooth, a USB-C port for auxiliary inputs, and a mid-woofer that’s 25% larger, delivering deeper bass and better sound definition.
Yes, thanks to the built-in Bluetooth 5.3, you can stream music directly from your smartphone or tablet without using Wi-Fi. However, some features like multiroom, voice assistants, and access to streaming services require a network connection.
Quick Tuning uses the Era 100’s built-in microphones to analyze your room’s acoustics in about 30 seconds. The process emits test signals, measures sound reflections, and automatically adjusts the equalization to optimize output based on the speaker’s placement, without requiring an iOS device.
No, following changes to Google’s technical requirements, the Era 100 only supports Sonos Voice Control and Amazon Alexa. Users in the Google ecosystem will have to rely on control via the Sonos app or use Bluetooth from their Android devices.
Yes, via the separately sold USB-C to 3.5 mm jack adapter. The turntable must have a built-in or external phono preamp. Once connected to an Era 100, the signal can be streamed to all other Sonos speakers on the home network.
For an optimal stereo setup, space the speakers 2.5 to 3 meters apart and position yourself at an equal distance from both speakers, forming an equilateral triangle. This layout ensures precise stereo imaging with a sweet spot where the left and right channels blend naturally.
Yes, it’s recommended to rerun the Trueplay process after any significant repositioning, even within the same room. As acoustics vary with relative position to walls and furniture, new calibration will ensure optimal performance in the new location.

Excellent wireless speakers, bought to replace my Sonos One speakers in my home theater.
The Ones were already decent, but here the sound is clearly better, I don’t regret my purchase.
I recommend them, and thanks to HCS.
