JVC DLA-NZ900
Overview
JVC has just unveiled its brand new high-end laser projector, the DLA-NZ900BE. This model follows the highly acclaimed DLA-NZ9, bringing a number of improvements. Still based on JVC’s D-ILA technology, it can display a native 8K image or upscale 4K sources to 8K thanks to the 2nd generation e-shift. Let’s take a detailed look at what this new projector has to offer.
3rd Generation Native 8K D-ILA Matrix
At the heart of the DLA-NZ900BE is a 0.69-inch 3rd generation native 8K D-ILA matrix. JVC has improved the control of liquid crystal alignment and pixel flatness compared to the previous generation used in the NZ9. This results in a better native contrast ratio, announced at 150,000:1, as well as greater uniformity of the projected image.
This chip is paired with the 2nd generation 8K e-shift, a proprietary JVC technology that shifts each pixel by 0.5 pixels in four directions (up, down, left, right) to double the resolution. Thanks to a new 8K scaling engine, sharpness and detail are greatly enhanced, whether the source is native 8K or upscaled from 4K.
Premium Optical Section
To complement this cutting-edge matrix, JVC has equipped the NZ900 with a premium all-glass optic with a 100 mm diameter. It offers a motorized 2x zoom and a wide lens shift, vertical at +/- 100% and horizontal at +/- 43%, allowing it to adapt to all configurations, even the most complex.
The DLA-NZ900BE is also equipped with a latest-generation phosphor laser lamp, capable of delivering a brightness of 3300 lumens, a 10% increase compared to the NZ9. The lifespan is estimated at around 20,000 hours. The control of the light source has been refined, going from 3 to 101 adjustment levels to best suit SDR and HDR content.
Extended Compatibility
In terms of connectivity, the NZ900 is well-equipped with two HDMI 2.1 inputs compatible with 8K 60 Hz and 4K 120 Hz (48 Gbps bandwidth), an Ethernet port, an RS-232C input, and a USB port. It supports HDCP 2.3.
In addition to 8K signals, this projector accepts numerous video formats, including 720p, 1080i, 1080p 24/25/30/50/60 Hz, and 4K 24/25/30/50/60 Hz. It is also compatible with Full HD 3D.
Regarding HDR, the JVC DLA-NZ900BE supports HDR10, HDR10+, and HLG (Hybrid Log Gamma) formats. It benefits from the proprietary Frame Adapt HDR technology, which dynamically optimizes tone mapping, image by image. The “Theater Optimizer” mode allows the rendering to be adapted to the viewing environment.
Optimized Image Modes
Several image modes are offered to best suit the type of content being viewed:
- The Natural mode faithfully reproduces natural colors.
- The HDR10 mode is optimized for HDR10 sources.
- The new Vivid mode delivers vibrant colors, ideal for animated films or video games.
- A low latency mode is provided for gaming to reduce response time.
The DLA-NZ900BE covers more than 100% of the DCI-P3 color space thanks to its cinema filter. It includes an automatic calibration system with a probe. Additionally, it is compatible with professional ISF calibrations.
Easy Installation and Integration
With dimensions of 500 x 234 x 505 mm and a weight of 25.2 kg, the NZ900 is no lightweight. However, JVC has integrated several practical features to facilitate its installation:
- An installation mode that stores up to 10 settings (zoom, shift, image mode…) allowing for quick switching between configurations.
- A screen adjustment mode that specifies screen characteristics (ratio, size, gain) to automatically adapt color settings.
- Compatibility with anamorphic lenses is provided.
- The Pixel Adjust function ensures precise pixel alignment for optimal sharpness.
- Motorized lens control is operated via the included remote control.
In terms of sound, JVC has optimized the cooling system compared to the NZ9, reducing fan speed for quieter operation.
