At the heart of the DS-10 EVO is a latest-generation AKM AK4493 digital-to-analog converter. The frequency response extends from 20 Hz to 20 kHz with a variation of only ± 0.1 dB. The total harmonic distortion (THD) is less than 0.001%, ensuring exceptionally pure sound reproduction. With a signal-to-noise ratio of 125 dB and a dynamic range of 120 dB, the DS-10 EVO delivers performance worthy of the best devices in its category.
The DS-10 EVO is a comprehensive streamer, compatible with major online music services such as Tidal, Qobuz, Spotify Connect, and Deezer. It also supports Roon, Airplay, and the UPnP/DLNA standard. Network connectivity is via Ethernet or Wi-Fi (802.11a/b/g/n/ac dual-band standard). High-definition Bluetooth 5.0 allows music streaming from a smartphone or tablet. Audio files up to 32-bit/384 kHz and DSD256 are supported, in AIFF, ALAC, WAV, FLAC, MP3, Apple Lossless formats, etc. The device can access a music library stored on a NAS or USB drive.
The DS-10 EVO features a switchable high-end analog preamplification stage. This allows volume control from the remote control, GN Control app, or front panel knob. A professional 6.35 mm jack headphone output is present, with two sensitivity levels (high/low). This proprietary Gold Note technology makes the most of any headphones. An additional analog input allows connecting other sources such as a CD player or a turntable equipped with a phono preamplifier.
The 2.8-inch TFT color screen on the front of the DS-10 EVO displays all useful information: selected source, volume, audio format, sampling frequency, etc. Menu navigation is done using the multifunction knob (SKC) or from the GN Control app, available for free on iOS and Android. The supplied remote control also allows operating all the device’s functions. Three listening profiles are available to adapt the DAC’s behavior to the type of music, without degrading the audio signal. These profiles act on the de-emphasis parameters, low-pass digital filters, and the DSD filter.
When listening, the Gold Note DS-10 EVO seduces with its great musicality. The sound is precise, detailed, and warm all at once. The soundstage is wide and deep, with a beautiful sense of space between instruments. Timbres are realistic, particularly on voices and acoustic instruments. The dynamics are excellent, with the device effortlessly rendering variations in level, from pianissimi to fortissimi. The bass is deep and well-defined, without any heaviness. The highs are detailed and airy, without aggression. The DS-10 EVO is a very balanced device that showcases all styles of music.
To get the most out of the DS-10 EVO, Gold Note offers an optional external power supply, the PSU-10 EVO. It uses a dual-coil hybrid technology with four transformers, three of which are dedicated to powering the different sections of the DAC. With its ultra-low noise voltage regulators, the PSU-10 EVO further reduces background noise and improves the dynamics and resolution of the DS-10 EVO.
