Integra DTM-7.4
Overview
Successor to the DTM-7, this two‑channel stereo receiver adopts Class G amplification and upgrades to HDMI 2.1 with 8K support. Integra has designed it for both hi‑fi listening and integration into complete home automation systems. The MM/MC phono section benefits from special treatment, with a dedicated board and patented op‑amp circuits. A versatile device that combines the functions of streamer, amplifier, and video switcher.
Class G amplification with low negative feedback
The power stage delivers 110 W per channel into 8 ohms (20 Hz – 20 kHz, 0.08% THD). The Class G topology uses two separate power rails: the first powers low‑level passages with a reduced voltage, and the second kicks in during more demanding transients. This approach limits heat dissipation compared to traditional Class A/B, which partly explains the compact size of the unit (9 kg for 435 × 149 × 328 mm).
The low negative feedback (NFB) design reduces phase artefacts at the ends of the spectrum. Integra claims a frequency response from 5 Hz to 100 kHz in direct mode, i.e. when the tone control circuits are bypassed. The transformer and low‑impedance capacitors are custom components.
Digital conversion and audio processing
The AKM AK4452 converter accepts PCM signals up to 768 kHz at 32‑bit and handles DSD streams. This chip, known for its low distortion, is found in several higher‑end standalone DACs.
The digital inputs include two optical and one coaxial, all limited to stereo PCM. The front and rear USB ports read files stored on a USB drive (MP3, FLAC, WAV, AIFF, DSD) with sampling rates up to 192 kHz for PCM. Tone control operates on bass at 100 Hz and treble at 10 kHz, with a ±10 dB range in both cases.
A phono stage that means business
Many stereo receivers include a basic MM phono input, almost as a box‑ticking exercise. The DTM-7.4 goes further with a MM and MC‑compatible preamp, installed on an isolated board to limit interference. Integra’s patented discrete op‑amp circuits protect the fragile signals from moving‑coil cartridges, whose output voltage sometimes does not exceed 0.2 mV.
This focus on vinyl is anything but anecdotal: it allows the use of high‑end cartridges without adding an external preamp.
Four 8K‑compatible HDMI 2.1 inputs
The four HDMI inputs and the HDMI output support 8K video at 60 Hz or 4K at 120 Hz (up to 40 Gbit/s), with HDCP 2.3, HDR and 4:4:4 subsampling compatibility. The output features ARC (Audio Return Channel), allowing you to retrieve TV sound without an additional audio cable.
The receiver does not process video: it passes it through to the display as is. HDMI sources cannot be routed to Zone 2, a limitation to bear in mind for multi‑room setups.
Streaming and networking: Roon Ready, AirPlay 2, Chromecast
Roon Ready certification ensures seamless integration with the music management software. Built‑in services include Spotify, Amazon Music HD, Tidal, Deezer, Pandora, and TuneIn. Chromecast audio and AirPlay 2 cover the Google and Apple ecosystems. Bluetooth (SBC and AAC) rounds out the wireless options, in receive mode only.
Network connectivity is via dual‑band Wi‑Fi (2.4 and 5 GHz, 802.11ac MIMO 2×2) or Ethernet. The IP address is displayed on the front panel with a simple press of the Display button, a handy detail during setup.
Integration tools for installers
This is where the DTM-7.4 stands out from its Onkyo TX-8470 cousin. The rear panel adds an RS232 port, IR inputs/outputs, and two 12 V triggers. The web interface enables full configuration, downloading of setup files, and access to diagnostic tools (test patterns, EDID/HDCP settings, virtual remote control).
Compatibility with Control4, Crestron, Josh, Savant, OvrC and Domotz makes integration into existing home automation systems easier. The documented API offers discrete commands for almost all functions. Google Assistant and Siri voice assistants are supported via third‑party platforms.
Multi‑room setup and A/B binding posts
The Zone 2 output feeds an external amplifier in a second room, with a choice of sources limited to the tuner, analog inputs, optical/coaxial digital inputs (stereo PCM), USB, network, and Bluetooth. The volume of this zone remains fixed on the DTM-7.4 side: it is managed by the external amplifier.
The gold‑plated speaker binding posts accept two pairs in an A/B configuration. Two subwoofer outputs allow you to add one or two active subwoofers.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between the DTM-7.4 and the Onkyo TX-8470?
Both units share the same platform and the same audio specifications. The DTM-7.4 adds an RS232 port, IR inputs/outputs, two 12 V triggers, and extended compatibility with home automation control systems (Control4, Crestron, etc.). These features justify the price difference for professional installations.
Can the DTM-7.4 be used as a preamp only?
Yes. The main pre‑outs allow you to connect an external power amplifier. This setup bypasses the internal power stage while retaining the DAC, phono preamp, and network functions.
Does the receiver decode Dolby Atmos or DTS:X streams?
No. The DTM-7.4 is a strictly stereo device. Multichannel audio streams sent via HDMI are either ignored or downmixed to two channels depending on the source.
Which high‑resolution audio formats are supported via USB?
PCM files (WAV, FLAC, AIFF) up to 192 kHz/24‑bit and DSD files (2.8 MHz) can be played from a USB drive. The system accepts up to 20,000 tracks per folder and a directory depth of 16 levels.
