Frequently Asked Questions

What is the sonic difference between Triode and Ultra-linear modes?

Triode mode (2x50W) offers a warmer, more textured, and more intimate sound, with a broad, enveloping stereo image. Timbres are particularly rich and natural. Ultra-linear mode (2x80W) provides more power, better bass extension, and tighter control, at the expense of a slight reduction in that characteristic warmth. The choice between these two modes depends on the music you listen to, the speakers used, and your personal preferences.

Can I replace the EL34 tubes with other models?

Yes, the Cayin CS-100A is designed to allow replacement of the EL34 tubes with KT88s, which alters the amplifier’s sonic signature. This operation requires a readjustment of the bias, made easier by the built-in voltmeter. Other tubes from the EL family (such as EL34L or certain 6CA7) can also be used, but it is recommended to consult the manual or a specialized dealer before making any changes.

Which speakers should I pair with this amplifier?

The CS-100A EL34 pairs best with speakers of medium to high sensitivity (87 dB/W/m or higher). To compensate for its slight tendency to lighten the extreme low end, speakers with good bass extension are recommended. The amplifier provides 4 and 8 ohm output taps to optimize matching with different speaker models. Brands such as Focal, Klipsch, Harbeth, or Spendor are often cited as harmonious partners.

Is it necessary to use a power conditioner with this amplifier?

While not essential, a power conditioner can significantly improve the performance of the CS-100A EL34, which has proven sensitive to power quality in tests. Gains in definition, soundstage volume, and focus have been observed without any loss of dynamics. If your electrical installation is subject to interference or if you are seeking ultimate performance, a quality conditioner is a wise investment.

François

I hesitated between the different Cayin amp models.. I finally chose this model for its power (2x80 watts) and also because it has no bluetooth, no dac, etc... which would have duplicated functions...with my other devices.
The EL34 version is 500 euros cheaper than the KT88 version, so for the price of the CS-100A KT88 you can get the CS-100A EL34 and swap the tubes for KT88s, which allowed me to have two 'sets of 8 matched tubes'.
It comes standard with the following tubes:
8 EL34 JJ,
1 6SN7 Tung-SOL,
2 12AU7A/ECC82 Electro-harmonix
2 12BH7 Electro-harmonix.
With these stock tubes, after break-in the sound is already excellent, warm, clear, very natural.
For certain types of music, I was expecting a slight lack of bass and impact in the bass.
But, the advantage with this type of device is that you can do 'tube rolling', that is to say change the tubes in order to obtain the desired sound signature.
As planned, I ordered a set of 8 matched TAD KT88 red Base tubes in order to get round, deep bass with impact.
I also installed a "6SN7 NOS Sylvania chrome top green dot black plates USA 50s" which brings a lot of warmth and to finish I put in two "12AU7 RCA long black plates foil getter".
Fantastic result for listening to the music I love, namely blues, progressive rock and 70's rock (Wishbone ash, Point blank, Colosseum, Camel, Luther Allison etc...)
As for the finish, it's high-end, the knobs are solid, the aluminum front panel is superb, same for the remote control. I find the device aesthetically pleasing, and it's always a pleasure to remove the grille to reveal the tubes to guests, a bit like lifting the hood of an old car to show the engine.
As for power, the 2 x 80 Watts are more than enough to drive my Triangle Signature Delta speakers and I am truly delighted with my system, Thank you Franck!
