A Revolutionary Hybrid Design

At the heart of the N3 Ultra experience lies its “Triple Timbre” system, an exclusive architecture that allows you to switch between three distinct sound signatures. This flexibility is made possible by the integration of military-grade Raytheon JAN6418 tubes, components originally developed for military radio communication applications. These tubes are paired with a hybrid preamplification circuit offering three listening modes:

• Classic Tube: Emphasizes the warmth and harmonic richness characteristic of vintage tube amps, with a pronounced and enveloping coloration.
• Modern Tube: Strikes a balance between tube smoothness and improved linearity, preserving analog warmth while enhancing fidelity.
• Solid State (transistors): Delivers a more neutral and analytical sound, with maximized dynamics and increased precision.

To ensure reliable use on the go, Cayin has developed an ingenious anti-vibration protection system. The tubes are carefully installed in a specially designed silicone cradle and connected to the audio circuits via a flexible connector. This innovation minimizes microphonic effects (parasitic noise caused by vibrations) that typically affect tubes, even during movement or light shocks.

High-End Audio Architecture

The N3 Ultra doesn’t just feature tubes: it also boasts a sophisticated digital-to-analog conversion architecture. At its core are two AKM AK4493S converters configured in mono differential mode. This setup dedicates an entire DAC to each stereo channel, significantly reducing channel interference and optimizing the signal-to-noise ratio.

This precision is further enhanced by two Femto oscillators at 49.152 MHz and 45.158 MHz, which work in tandem with the DACs to minimize jitter (timing fluctuations) during playback. The N3 Ultra can thus effortlessly decode the most demanding audio formats, up to 32-bit/768 kHz PCM and DSD512, including SACD-ISO files.

Volume control is handled by an analog JRC NJW1195A circuit, preserving signal integrity at all listening levels. In terms of power, the player delivers 250 mW at 32 ohms from its 3.5 mm unbalanced output, and 600 mW at 32 ohms from its 4.4 mm balanced Pentaconn output. This power is sufficient to properly drive most headphones on the market up to 150 ohms impedance.

Redesigned Design and Ergonomics

Compared to its predecessor, the N3 Ultra benefits from significant ergonomic improvements. The touchscreen increases from 3.2” to 4.1”, with an HD resolution of 1280 × 720 pixels. While brightness remains limited for use in direct sunlight, the display is much more comfortable for navigating your music library.

The sandblasted metal chassis inspires confidence, and the physical controls have been redesigned. The volume wheel, previously problematic on the N3 Pro, is no longer clickable and is now more reliable. A dedicated power button has been added to the top of the device. The front touch button, surrounded by an indicator LED, allows easy return to the main menu.

Weighing 204 grams and with compact dimensions (65.5 x 125 x 19.5 mm), the device remains highly portable despite its advanced technology. The microSD card reader accepts cards up to 1 TB, allowing you to carry a substantial music library on the go, though some users report difficulty inserting and removing cards.

A Customizable Sound Experience

The main appeal of the N3 Ultra lies in its sonic versatility. The Classic Tube mode stands out for its warm signature and three-dimensional soundstage, ideal for genres like jazz, classical, or acoustic music. Modern Tube mode offers a subtle balance, retaining some tube warmth while improving precision and definition.

Solid State mode, on the other hand, favors neutrality and accuracy, with better extension at the extremes of the sound spectrum. This flexibility allows you to tailor your listening experience according to music genre, headphones used, or simply your mood.

Beyond the three main modes, the N3 Ultra features a 10-band equalizer for precise sound signature adjustment. Three gain levels are also available to match amplification to the sensitivity of various headphones and earphones.

The quality of tube isolation deserves mention: even in tube mode, background noise is virtually imperceptible, except with extremely sensitive earphones at high gain. The crackling and hissing sometimes present on the N3 Pro have been eliminated, even during use on the move.

Versatility and Connectivity

Focused on a pure listening experience, the N3 Ultra makes the deliberate choice to forgo the wireless connections (Wi-Fi and Bluetooth) found on its predecessor. This technical decision allows resources to be concentrated on sound quality and eliminates potential sources of interference.

Nevertheless, the player offers comprehensive wired connectivity with:

• A 4.4 mm balanced Pentaconn headphone output (also usable in line mode)
• A USB-C port for file transfer and USB DAC function

The Cayin N3 Ultra runs on a heavily modified and audio-optimized Android 8.1. Unlike many Android-based players, this version is completely offline and does not allow the installation of third-party apps such as streaming services.

The touchscreen interface, while sometimes featuring elements that are a bit small for easy finger operation, remains generally smooth and responsive. Navigating the music library is intuitive, and the illuminated home button makes returning to the main menu easy.
