Unnu Classic Series Model 220
Overview
Unnu’s Model 220 is a two-compartment audio-video cabinet designed to organize hi-fi equipment without compromising interior aesthetics. Conceived in Denmark by Mike Fabricius and manufactured by Hammel Furniture, it combines local craftsmanship, modularity, and practical features in a compact 103.4 cm-wide format.
Construction and materials: robustness and finesse
The cabinet’s structure is built from 16 mm MDF (Medium Density Fiberboard) panels coated with polyurethane paint. This material choice is no accident: MDF offers a perfectly smooth surface and superior dimensional stability compared to solid wood, preventing warping caused by humidity changes. The industrially applied polyurethane paint ensures scratch resistance and long-term durability.
Each compartment is reinforced by four specially designed metal brackets, secured at the back of the structure. This construction technique gives the cabinet notable rigidity despite the absence of a traditional fixed back. The weight of audio-video equipment, which can be substantial, therefore poses no problem.
The rear panels deserve special attention. Positioned 5 cm from the back of the cabinet, they leave generous space for cable routing and device ventilation. Their magnetic mounting lets you remove them in seconds, without tools, for easy access to connections. This elegant solution avoids visible screws and greatly simplifies installation and maintenance.
The Model 220 comes in four finishes: white and black lacquer, and oak and walnut veneer. The veneered versions add natural warmth while retaining the precision of industrial manufacturing. Oak, with its light honey tones, integrates seamlessly into Scandinavian or contemporary interiors. Walnut, with its chocolate hues and subtle highlights, is better suited to cozy atmospheres or pairings with materials like glass and metal.
Modularity and options: a cabinet that adapts
Each compartment of the Model 220 can accommodate an adjustable intermediate shelf with three height positions. This shelf divides the interior into two distinct areas: handy for physically separating an amplifier from a CD player, or for creating a level dedicated to media storage. Additional shelves can be ordered separately to multiply configurations.
Users can leave compartments open, close them with wood or fabric doors, or replace them with drawer modules. Wood doors, available in white, black, oak, or walnut, match the cabinet finish for a cohesive look. Folding panel doors free up lateral space when opened, unlike traditional hinged doors.
Fabric doors are a particularly relevant option for audio-video setups. Available in nine colors across two series (Melange: anthracite, concrete, frost, coffee, latte; Basic: white, silver, black, gray), they address a recurring issue: how to visually conceal equipment while preserving functionality? The fabric lets infrared remote signals pass through, so there’s no need to open doors to change sources or adjust volume. It also allows sound to pass with no notable attenuation, which is useful if you place a center speaker behind a door or if the amplifier has a diagnostic speaker.
The drawer modules, sold as a pair to replace one compartment, feature full-extension slides. These rails allow the drawer to open completely, providing access all the way to the back without fumbling. The drawers can be organized into three rows of CDs or two rows of DVDs and Blu-rays thanks to repositionable dividers. Retaining clips fit between dividers to prevent incomplete rows from tipping.
Cable management: simplicity and discretion
The Model 220 includes two circular cable pass-throughs, one centered on the top panel and the other on the bottom panel. These openings let you route cables up to a TV placed above, or down to a wall outlet, without them being visible from the front. The 5 cm space between the rear panels and the back of the cabinet offers generous routing for power, HDMI, network, and speaker cables.
Optional aluminum cable cover plates can be added to the top of the cabinet. They come in multiple configurations (4, 5, or 6 ports) and in aluminum or black finishes. These plates transform simple holes into aesthetic solutions, with a discreetly engraved Unnu logo.
Positioning and stability
The Model 220 can be set on feet or wall-mounted. The feet, sold in sets of four, come in several versions: silver aluminum, black, or with casters to make moving easier during cleaning or reorganization. The footed models have adjustable screws to compensate for uneven floors.
Wall mounts come in three types (Wallmount 1, 2, and 3), each suited to a specific configuration depending on weight and desired distance from the wall. Wall mounting frees up floor space and makes vacuuming easier, while giving the cabinet a visually lighter appearance.
Range evolution and positioning
The Model 220 is part of a range that also includes the Model 221 (450 mm depth instead of 365 mm), as well as three-compartment models (230 and 231). It was introduced in 2015 to round out the Unnu lineup with a reduced depth, better suited to tight spaces or wall installations.
Compared to Clic cabinets, whose prices start at several thousand euros for fully hand-made production, Unnu offers a more accessible industrial alternative. The finishes are industrial rather than artisanal, ensuring perfect consistency between units. Nevertheless, the Model 220 retains the functional thinking that made Clic successful: removable rear panels, acoustically transparent fabric doors, and extensive modularity.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can you combine different door and drawer options on the same cabinet?
Yes, each compartment can have a different configuration. For example, you can equip the left compartment with a fabric door and the right with a wood door, or replace one compartment with two drawers. This flexibility allows you to tailor the cabinet precisely to your needs—for instance, hiding electronics on one side while storing media on the other.
Do fabric doors muffle sound or block remotes?
No, the fabric used for Unnu doors lets sound waves and infrared remote signals pass without significant attenuation. The fabric is stretched over a black MDF frame and held by a black cord. Users can control their equipment with the doors closed, avoiding the need to open them systematically. Note, however, that white fabric doors soil more easily and are better suited to equipment that doesn’t require daily access.
How does the magnetic rear panel system work?
The rear panels attach to the cabinet structure by simple magnetization. No screws are needed. To access cables, just pull gently on the panel to detach it, then reposition it once you’re done. This system greatly simplifies initial wiring and later changes, especially appreciated when adding a new device or replacing a cable.
What types of equipment can be installed in the Model 220?
The internal dimensions of each compartment (322 mm height, 482 mm width, 295 mm usable depth) fit most hi-fi amplifiers, network players, compact turntables, TV set-top boxes, game consoles, and small soundbars. Larger power amplifiers or bulky multichannel units will require the deeper Model 221. It’s recommended to check your equipment’s dimensions before purchase, also accounting for the space needed for rear connectors.
