Final DX6000

The Final DX6000 inaugurates a new series from the Japanese manufacturer, employing a specific technical approach to electrodynamic technology. The first model in the DX lineup launched in April 2025, this open-back headphone draws on the company’s acoustic expertise to deliver sound reproduction akin to high-fidelity loudspeakers. It features a magnesium-alloy diaphragm, a reengineered voice-coil system, and a ventilated housing.

Free-Air Architecture: when openness becomes absolute

One of the DX6000’s major innovations lies in its so-called “Free Air” architecture. Unlike traditional open-back headphones that offer partial venting, the DX6000 establishes a continuous connection between the front and rear chambers of the driver. This design enables completely unobstructed, constraint-free airflow.

This radical approach presents a major challenge: how do you reproduce powerful bass without relying on the usual pressurization of closed or semi-closed headphones? Final’s answer is to drive the driver’s minimum resonance frequency (f₀) extremely low. By refining the core parameters of the transducer, the DX6000 produces deep, natural bass without needing to seal the space between the driver and the ear.

The earpads play a crucial role here. Made from breathable foam covered with a special fabric based on washi—traditional Japanese paper made from tree bark—they offer optimal air permeability. The same material is also used on the headband, ensuring moisture resistance and exceptional durability. The resulting sound is closer to studio monitor loudspeakers than to conventional headphones, with a vast soundstage and bass free from any artificial coloration.

A dynamic driver rethought from the ground up

At the heart of the DX6000 beats an entirely new driver, the result of several years of research and development. The machined magnesium-alloy diaphragm combines structural rigidity with high internal damping. Magnesium was chosen for its remarkable acoustic neutrality and lightness, despite the manufacturing challenges it entails. Final had to develop a specific oxidation treatment and a technique for folding the surround edges to perfectly balance mechanical strength and sound quality.

The true technical feat lies in the suspension. Made from expanded silicone resin, it features a foamy structure that is both thick and supple. This ultra-light foam solves a common problem with conventional suspension materials: the generation of spurious resonances in certain frequency bands. The magnesium diaphragm is placed directly in a mold, and the expanded silicone suspension is cast around it to form a monobloc assembly. This technique completely eliminates the use of adhesives, a notorious source of unit-to-unit sonic variation and acoustic degradation.

Another noteworthy innovation: routing of the voice-coil leads. In most drivers, these leads are glued to the suspension to prevent breakage, but this attachment creates unbalanced diaphragm movement. Final chose an audacious solution: the leads are suspended in air, with no contact with the suspension. To ensure reliability while preserving acoustic purity, the company developed a proprietary aluminum alloy specifically for the coil wires. This “airborne” design enables perfectly linear piston-like motion of the diaphragm.

Build and ergonomics: Japanese precision

The DX6000’s housing is machined with remarkable precision from a solid block of aluminum-magnesium alloy. This meticulous machining minimizes parasitic resonances and sound distortion by providing a rigid support for the driver. Despite its robust appearance and substantial metal cups, the headphone maintains a controlled weight of 363 grams (without cable), notably lower than the 523 grams of the planar D8000 Pro or the over-600-gram Sonorous X closed-back.

Ergonomics follow Final’s high-end design language, with circular earcups and a headband with flat arms mounted on swivels. While the styling isn’t a radical break from the brand’s previous models, it reflects an approach where function takes precedence over fashion. The multi-slat open grilles immediately reveal the design’s ultra-ventilated character.

The circumaural earpads, developed specifically by Final, deserve special attention. Beyond their soft foam filling, they’re covered with a fabric made from washi. This traditional Japanese material feels dry against the skin, wicks moisture effectively, and proves surprisingly durable. Important to note: the earpads are fastened to the driver with special screws. Their replacement therefore requires specialized disassembly and must be carried out by Final Audio to maintain the warranty.

Connectivity uses a dual-mono locking 3.5 mm jack format, making cable changes easy if needed. The included cable, developed specifically for the DX series, is three meters long. Made from OFC (Oxygen-Free Copper), it is notably thin and lightweight, designed not to burden the headphone unnecessarily. Its four-pin XLR termination (balanced connector) underscores the DX6000’s intended desktop use. A thermoformed semi-rigid case rounds out the accessories, allowing safe transport of the headphone.
