Audio Technica AT-VM95E/H
Overview
Succeding the AT95E was no trivial matter. This cartridge, produced for nearly four decades, has equipped millions of turntables around the world. The VM95 series carries the torch by integrating the developments of the AT95EX from 2015, with a redesigned body, a more generous output, and above all a modular architecture that paves the way for progressive upgrades. The AT-VM95E/H kit delivers this cartridge pre-mounted on the AT-HS6BK headshell, for immediate setup.
A dual moving magnet generator
The heart of the VM95 series lies in Audio-Technica’s proprietary Dual Magnet technology. Two V-shaped magnets, mirroring the geometry of cutting heads, generate the signal for each channel. A central shielding plate isolates the two channels to limit crosstalk. The para-toroidal coils, wound with high-purity OFC copper, produce an output voltage of 4.0 mV, a comfortable level that suits most MM phono preamps without excessive gain.
The bonded elliptical stylus (0.3 × 0.7 mil) hugs the groove walls more precisely than a conical tip. The increased contact surface reduces pinch distortion and refines the reproduction of high frequencies. The tubular aluminum cantilever offers a good balance between rigidity and low mass, with a dynamic compliance of 7 × 10⁻⁶ cm/dyne at 100 Hz, an average value suitable for medium to high-mass tonearms.
A headshell designed for simplicity
The AT-HS6BK is more than a simple mount. This die-cast aluminum headshell weighs only 9 grams and helps reduce unwanted vibrations. Its gold-plated lead wires preserve signal integrity, while the finger lift makes it easier to cue the stylus without accidentally touching the tip.
Factory assembly removes the alignment step: the cartridge arrives centered, screws tightened, wires connected. You simply slide the assembly into the tonearm, lock the collar, and set the tracking force between 1.8 and 2.2 grams (2.0 g nominal). The recommended capacitive load is between 100 and 200 pF, a parameter to consider if your phono preamp allows fine adjustment.
Sound signature and tracking behavior
The VM95E delivers a particularly present midrange, with density and vocal naturalness that the older AT95E did not quite reach. The bass gains in authority without becoming overpowering. The treble, slightly more relaxed compared to the previous generation, brings air without harshness—an overall balance that lends itself to long listening sessions.
On heavily modulated pressings or pronounced sibilants, the bonded elliptical tip can show its limits: brief distortions on “s” sounds or on dense high-frequency passages. This is the inherent trade-off of this type of stylus, shared by most cartridges in this category. The frequency response extends from 20 Hz to 22 kHz, with channel separation of 20 dB at 1 kHz.
An upgradable platform
The main attraction of the VM95 series lies in its interchangeable styli. The cartridge body accepts six different stylus profiles, from conical (VMN95C) to Shibata (VMN95SH), without altering the tonearm settings. Switching from an elliptical tip to a Microlinear takes only a few seconds: you remove the cantilever/stylus assembly and snap the new one into place.
This modularity lets you adapt the cartridge to the evolution of your system or your expectations. The nude elliptical stylus (VMN95EN) offers a finer contact with the groove; the Microlinear (VMN95ML) extends lifespan to around 1,000 hours and extracts more detail; the Shibata (VMN95SH) combines finesse with excellent high-frequency tracking. There is even a stylus dedicated to 78 rpm records (VMN95SP) for shellac collectors.
Installation and compatibility
The AT-HS6BK headshell complies with the ½-inch standard and connects to any tonearm fitted with an SME-type connector or equivalent—Technics SL-1200, Pro-Ject turntables with removable arms, Denon, Reloop, and many others. The total weight of the assembly (15.5 g) remains within the acceptable range of most tonearms without requiring an additional counterweight.
The integrated M2.6 threaded inserts in the cartridge body simplify any later disassembly or replacement: two screws are all you need, with no nuts to fumble with under the headshell. Audio-Technica also supplies two screw lengths (8 mm and 11 mm) as well as plastic washers to accommodate different setups.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is the AT-VM95E/H cartridge compatible with my turntable?
The AT-HS6BK headshell uses the standard ½-inch four-pin mount. It fits any tonearm with a round SME connector and locking collar. Check that your tonearm supports a weight of 15.5 g without exceeding the limit of its counterweight.
Can I use a stylus from another series on the VM95 body?
Yes, styli from the AT-XP (DJ) series are mechanically compatible with the VM95 body. However, their compliance and recommended tracking force (3 g) differ, which changes tracking behavior. The sonic result and record/stylus wear may vary.
How can I clean the stylus without damaging it?
A short-bristle carbon-fiber brush, swept from the back to the front of the cantilever, is sufficient for routine cleaning. Avoid lateral movements that could misalign the cantilever. For stubborn deposits, a drop of dedicated (alcohol-free) stylus cleaner can be applied with a fine brush.
What is the difference between the elliptical stylus (VMN95E) and the nude elliptical stylus (VMN95EN)?
The “nude” stylus is cut from a solid diamond and mounted on the cantilever without adhesive, which improves mechanical coupling. It delivers more detailed playback and better high-frequency tracking, at the cost of being slightly more sensitive to groove impurities.
Is the 100–200 pF load capacitance really important?
It affects the high-frequency response curve. Excessive capacitance (long cables, preamp with large input capacitors) can cause a brightness peak. If your preamp does not allow you to adjust this parameter, use short cables with low capacitance per meter.
Can I use this cartridge on a low effective-mass tonearm?
The VM95E’s dynamic compliance (7 × 10⁻⁶ cm/dyne at 100 Hz) makes it better suited to medium to high-mass arms. On a very light tonearm, the arm/cartridge resonance frequency may rise above the optimal 8–12 Hz range, which can affect tracking and stereo image stability.
