Overview
Three decades of professional monitoring expertise condensed into less than 17 centimeters of width. With the Prophecy5, PMC reinvents its entry-level two-way floorstander with a complete overhaul: new drivers, a major evolution of ATL technology, and an aluminum plinth that redefines the integration of the LaminairX aerodynamic port. This model succeeds the Twenty5 23i and inaugurates the Prophecy range, designed to bring home listening even closer to studio-grade precision.
A transmission line of nearly two meters in just 90 centimeters of height
ATL (Advanced Transmission Line) technology has been the core of PMC’s DNA since the beginning. Unlike conventional bass-reflex speakers, a transmission line uses a long, damped internal tunnel that absorbs the mid and high frequencies radiated from the rear of the driver, while allowing the low frequencies to exit in phase with the front radiation. The result: deeper bass, reduced distortion, and a stable frequency response at any listening level.
The Prophecy5 incorporates a line with an effective length of 1.79 meters in a cabinet that stands just 90 centimeters tall with the spikes. This integration feat delivers bass extension down to 40 Hz (at -3 dB) while the footprint remains comparable to that of a stand-mounted bookshelf speaker.
LaminairX: aerodynamics in the service of bass
Over ten years ago, PMC introduced the Laminair system, inspired by laminar flow techniques used in Formula 1 and endurance racing. The idea: reduce turbulence at the port exit to eliminate air noise and improve bass definition. The Prophecy range debuts LaminairX, a patented evolution that takes this concept further.
On the Prophecy5, the base of the speaker is made from a massive aluminum extrusion whose fins form both the port and a stable support. This part replaces the outriggers on the former Twenty5i: the center of gravity is low enough to make external stabilizing feet unnecessary. Beyond mechanical stability, the aluminum adds mass that contributes to cabinet inertia and vibration control. According to PMC, the LaminairX system reduces harmonic distortion by 3 dB compared to the previous generation.
Drivers developed for the range
The 27 mm soft-dome tweeter is derived from the nearfield and mid-field monitors used in studios. It is mounted in a waveguide that controls dispersion and eases integration with the mid-bass driver. The latter is a design specific to the Prophecy series: its 125 mm cone made of mica-loaded polypropylene combines lightness, rigidity, and damping. The long-throw (LTXL) voice coil and pressure-cast alloy chassis allow for large excursion while maintaining linear behavior.
PMC uses a laser sensor to analyze the behavior of each driver and verify its compatibility with the transmission line parameters. This approach, more time-consuming than simple standard quality control, ensures that each unit produced makes the most of the relationship between the transducer and the cabinet’s internal volume. The crossover point is set at 1.6 kHz, with a crossover network mounted on a fiberglass PCB and fitted with military-grade capacitors.
Discreet format, three wood finishes
At 165 mm wide and 260 mm deep (excluding terminals and grille), the Prophecy5 fits into spaces where larger floorstanders would be difficult to integrate. The weight of 17.7 kg per speaker remains manageable for handling without assistance.
The cabinet is available in three real-wood veneers: Mediterranean Oak for a light, warm tone, Natural Walnut for a classic look, and Blackened Walnut for a more contemporary finish. The magnetically attached grilles cover the entire front baffle and use a textured fabric that preserves the overall elegance. PMC has also revised its packaging: double-wall cardboard, recyclable cardboard inserts instead of expanded polystyrene, a fabric bag rather than plastic, and plant-based inks.
Amplification and setup
The nominal impedance of 6 Ohms and sensitivity of 87 dB/W/m put the Prophecy5 within reach of most integrated amplifiers or power amps on the market. PMC recommends power between 20 and 200 W, leaving plenty of flexibility when choosing electronics. The speakers work properly with modest components, but reveal more nuance when paired with high-quality amplification.
Placement deserves attention: the tweeter’s wide dispersion helps create a soundstage that extends beyond the speakers, but wall reflections play a more significant role than with models featuring tighter directivity. A slight toe-in toward the listening position, so that you just see the outer side panel of the cabinet, is a good starting point.

Frequently Asked Questions
What type of speaker cable is suitable?
The binding posts accept 4 mm banana plugs, spades, or bare wire. A cable with sufficient cross-section (2.5 mm² or more) and identical length for both speakers is all you need. PMC does not recommend any particular brand.
Can the Prophecy5 be integrated into a home cinema system?
Yes. The range includes a center speaker (ProphecyC) sharing the same sonic signature, allowing you to build a consistent LCR setup. The floorstanders can also be used as surrounds in more elaborate configurations.
What is the main difference compared with the Twenty5 23i it replaces?
Beyond the design and the LaminairX base, the Prophecy5 features completely new drivers and a recalculated transmission line. The specified frequency response is slightly less extended in the very low bass, but the reduced distortion and overall coherence more than compensate for this difference on paper.
