Overview

This British tonearm continues the core principles that built the reputation of Michell Engineering—the workshop that collaborated with Stanley Kubrick on 2001: A Space Odyssey before dedicating itself to turntables. The T8 represents a significant evolution over the T2, with a complete redesign of the bearing structure and a clearly resonance-control-oriented approach.

A redesigned architecture built around stainless steel

The T8 sets itself apart from its predecessor through its choice of materials and the geometry of its mechanical components. The vertical bearing housing is now made of aluminium, while the sleeve and vertical bearing shaft are upgraded to stainless steel. This combination targets a precise objective: increasing overall rigidity while damping unwanted vibrations.

The bearing assembly is hand-matched, piece by piece. This selection process achieves minimal play and reduced friction, which makes the stylus’s work in the groove easier. The one-piece arm tube, derived from the Rega tradition that Michell has long refined and optimised, retains its proven geometry but benefits from advanced design to limit resonance nodes.

Dedicated wiring and carefully selected connectors

The inside of the arm features low-mass copper wiring, designed to preserve the signal picked up by the cartridge without adding unnecessary impedance. The phono cables that extend this wiring to the RCA connectors exhibit low capacitance, a parameter that is particularly important with moving-magnet cartridges. The chosen phono plugs are of professional quality.

This attention to the signal path, from the stylus tip to the input of the phono preamplifier, contributes to the reproduction of micro-details and dynamic nuances present in the grooves.

Compatibility and purchasing conditions

The T8 has been developed specifically for Michell turntables in the Gyro series (GyroDec, Gyro SE, Orbe). The 222 mm mounting distance corresponds exactly to the geometry of these models. With an effective mass of 11 grams, the arm falls into the light-arm category and matches a wide range of cartridges, from moving magnet models to medium- to high-compliance moving coils.

Important point: the T8 is not sold separately. It can only be purchased when ordering a Michell turntable, as a replacement for or in addition to the original arm. The arm plate visible in the photographs is not included.

What changes compared with the T2

Owners of a T2 will find in the T8 a tangible evolution rather than a simple cosmetic update. The increased rigidity of the new bearing assembly translates into better control of unwanted movements. Low-level information—reverb, note decay, instrument texture—gains in clarity. Bass authority and stereo image stability also improve, a direct consequence of a more inert mechanical chain.

The wiring developed for the T8 has in fact been adapted to the current version of the T2, a clear sign that Michell considers this evolution a genuine benefit for its entire arm range.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the T8 compatible with turntables other than Michell?

No. The arm’s geometry, particularly the 222 mm mounting distance, has been calculated for Gyro series turntables. Adapting it to a third-party turntable would require structural modifications that Michell does not support.

What types of cartridges work well with this arm?

Its effective mass of 11 grams places it among light tonearms. It is suitable for moving magnet (MM) cartridges and moving coil (MC) cartridges with medium to high compliance. For very low-compliance MC cartridges, an arm with a higher effective mass would be preferable.

Is the arm plate supplied with the T8?

No, the arm plate is not included. It must be ordered separately, or it may already be fitted to your turntable if you own a Gyro model.

Can the T8 be purchased to replace an existing TecnoArm or T2?

The T8 is only available when ordering a new turntable. For upgrading an existing system, you should contact Michell Engineering or an authorised dealer directly to find out about replacement options.

Is VTA (vertical tracking angle) adjustment possible?

Yes, the arm features a height-adjustment system that allows you to set the tracking angle according to record thickness (standard pressings or 180 g) and the characteristics of the cartridge used.

What is the price difference between the T2 and the T8 when configuring a turntable?

The T8 adds a surcharge compared with the T2 when ordering a Michell turntable. The exact amount varies depending on distributors and chosen configurations.
