Overview
Difficult to combine discreet sound reinforcement with demanding environments. ArtSound’s MDC6.2 rises to the challenge with a built-in speaker certified IP66, capable of operating just as well under a weather-exposed veranda as in a steam-saturated hammam. This revised version of the MDC6 gains 3 dB of sensitivity and adopts a dedicated dome tweeter for more accurate high-frequency reproduction.
A design built for extreme conditions
The MDC6.2’s enclosure is molded in one piece from ABS, a technique that eliminates junction points where moisture could infiltrate. The front grille in anti-corrosion treated aluminum protects the drivers while maintaining a neat appearance, available in white or black depending on the desired integration.
The IP66 rating guarantees complete sealing: the first digit (6) indicates total protection against dust, the second (6) resistance to powerful water jets. In practical terms, the speaker can withstand direct exposure to rain, salty sea spray, or water splashes from a pool. The specified operating range extends from -20 °C to +105 °C, covering both winter frosts and the temperatures reached in a sauna.
Two complementary drivers
The 5.25-inch (133 mm) woofer uses a polypropylene cone reinforced with mica particles. This composite improves cone rigidity without weighing down the diaphragm, reducing distortion and ensuring stable behavior regardless of ambient humidity.
The 13 mm PEI (polyetherimide) dome tweeter with neodymium magnet takes over in the upper spectrum. Compared with the dual-cone system of the original MDC6, this dedicated tweeter offers more even dispersion and better definition on voices and acoustic instruments.
The 89 dB sensitivity (±2 dB at 1 W/1 m) allows you to achieve a comfortable sound level with modest amplification. ArtSound recommends between 10 and 50 W per channel on an 8 Ω load.
Frequency response and natural limits
The frequency range extends from 100 Hz to 20 kHz. This 100 Hz low-end limit clearly positions the MDC6.2 as a satellite speaker: mids and highs are reproduced with clarity, but deep bass is not its forte. For background music on a terrace or ambient sound in a spa, this behavior is perfectly suitable. However, for demanding music listening or a full home cinema system, it is preferable to add a subwoofer.
The recommended coverage of 40 m² corresponds to stereo playback with two speakers. In a larger or highly absorbent space (soft furnishings, vegetation), adding extra pairs will maintain even sound pressure.
Usage environments
The MDC6.2 naturally belongs in damp or exposed spaces: bathrooms, indoor pools, covered patios, verandas, pool houses. Its marine compatibility also makes it a credible option for installations on boats or on the seafront, where salt accelerates corrosion in conventional equipment.
For standard indoor use (living room, open-plan kitchen), speakers from ArtSound’s Happi or X-tended ranges will often be preferable: their non-sealed design allows for a wider frequency response and generally lower pricing. The MDC6.2 remains relevant if the environment presents a risk of moisture, even occasional.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can the MDC6.2 be installed directly in the rain, without shelter?
Yes. The IP66 certification and hermetic construction allow direct exposure to rainfall. The aluminum grille and hydrophobic drivers are not affected by water or temperature variations. However, prolonged immersion or installation below the waterline of a pool is not intended.
What kind of amplifier is required?
A stereo or multichannel amplifier delivering between 10 and 50 W per channel at 8 Ω is suitable. Conventional hi-fi amplifiers, home cinema receivers, or installation amplifiers (residential or 100 V with suitable transformer) will all work, provided the impedance is respected.
Can the MDC6.2 be painted to blend into the ceiling?
The aluminum grille can be spray-painted with a metal-compatible paint, after light sanding and applying a primer. The ABS frame can also be painted. Avoid blocking the grille perforations, as this would degrade sound dispersion.
What is the difference compared with the original MDC6?
The MDC6.2 offers increased sensitivity (89 dB versus 86 dB), a dedicated PEI dome tweeter instead of a dual-cone system, and a slightly extended frequency response (100 Hz versus 102 Hz). The cutout diameter changes from 125–130 mm to 112 mm, making installation easier in more confined spaces.
Is a subwoofer necessary for music listening?
For ambient sound (background music, podcasts, radio), the MDC6.2 is sufficient. If you want to reproduce deep bass (electronic music, movie soundtracks), adding an active subwoofer will significantly improve overall performance.
How many speakers should be planned for a 60 m² terrace?
The stated coverage of 40 m² corresponds to one stereo pair. For 60 m², two pairs positioned to cover the entire surface will ensure even sound distribution. A four-channel amplifier or a speaker switch will simplify wiring.
Is this speaker suitable for seaside use?
Yes, marine compatibility is explicitly validated by ArtSound. The materials resist salt and sea air. Occasional rinsing with fresh water will extend the grille’s lifespan in the most exposed environments.
