Canton Reference 1 white (pack of 2)

With its 81 kg per speaker and its curved, solid-milled cabinet, the Reference 1 succeeds the Reference K series and sits at the top of Canton’s range (just below the Alpha models, which cost twice as much). Manufactured in Weilrod, in Germany’s Taunus region, this 3-way floorstander brings together the brand’s latest developments in cones, cabinet design, and acoustic integration.

A cabinet without edges, machined on 5 axes

The Reference 1 abandons flat panels. Its sides, back, and top form a continuous shell made of multilayer laminate molded under pressure and heat. The 60 mm-thick front baffle is machined on a 5-axis CNC mill to accommodate the five drivers in rounded recesses. This geometry reduces edge diffraction (those notorious stray reflections that blur the soundstage) and increases structural rigidity compared to a conventional rectangular enclosure.

The internal bracing has been positioned using computer simulations. The volume is divided into three separate chambers, each optimized for its frequency range. The whole thing is heavy, but mass is not an end in itself: it results from the thickness of the panels and the mechanical decoupling of the plinth.

BCT diaphragms: black ceramic with tungsten

The three 219 mm woofers and the 174 mm midrange use BCT (Black Ceramic Tungsten) cones. The process consists of immersing an aluminum diaphragm in an electrolytic bath containing tungsten and other metals: oxidation converts around 25% of the molecular structure into ceramic. The cone gains rigidity without excess weight, allowing it to piston faster and with less distortion.

The 25 mm tweeter, for its part, uses an aluminum oxide ceramic (BC) and sits in an asymmetrical waveguide. This guide widens horizontal dispersion while controlling the energy sent toward the ceiling and floor, a useful balance for stabilizing the soundstage in rooms with low or reflective ceilings.

Bass-Guide and downward-firing port

Canton has redesigned its bass-reflex system for the Reference series. The port vents underneath the cabinet, firing toward the floor, and incorporates a Bass-Guide intended to distribute low-frequency energy more evenly throughout the room. This configuration makes it easier to place the speaker close to the rear wall without an excessive hump in the low end, although a distance of 50 to 70 cm is still preferable to let the speaker breathe.

The claimed response extends down to 18 Hz, an ambitious figure for a passive speaker without electronic assistance. In practice, the three woofers and the generous cabinet volume produce tight, controlled bass, capable of reproducing organ pedals or electronic synths without collapsing at high levels.

WBT binding posts and level adjustment

At the rear, the WBT-nextgen binding posts are made of POM (polyoxymethylene), a technical plastic with low internal damping. They accept cable cross-sections up to 10 mm² and support bi-wiring or bi-amping. Two potentiometers allow you to adjust the midrange and treble levels in 1.5 dB steps, a feature dubbed RC (Room Compensation). This adjustment partially compensates for the acoustics of rooms that are too dead or too reverberant.

In practice: amplification and placement requirements

With a sensitivity of 88 dB and a nominal impedance of 4 ohms, the Reference 1 benefits from an amplifier capable of delivering current into a demanding load. A 100 W integrated will move the cones, but the speaker truly reveals its dynamics and bass control with more robust power amps, from 150 to 200 W per channel and up.

Its 133 cm height places the tweeter at a good distance from the floor, which suits a seated listening position on a standard sofa. The speaker remains imposing, and its 39 cm width requires substantial space between the two towers for an open, well-defined soundstage.
