Overview
After the Smart Sub 8, Canton is expanding its wireless audio system with a more powerful model. The Smart Sub 12 features a 308 mm (12-inch) cellulose-graphite woofer in a down-firing configuration beneath a cubic enclosure. Its integration into the Smart ecosystem is based on a proprietary radio link: no cable between the subwoofer and the speakers, just a power cord. Power on is automatic as soon as an audio signal is detected.
A compact format despite the driver diameter
The Smart Sub 12 adopts a lacquered cube design, available in satin black or white, topped with a polished glass plate. This refined finish allows it to blend into a living space without imposing the technical look usually associated with subwoofers. The 308 mm woofer radiates towards the floor (downfire) rather than forward, which offers two advantages: the driver remains invisible, and bass waves are distributed more evenly throughout the room, reducing placement sensitivity.
This down-firing configuration makes positioning easier. The subwoofer can be placed relatively freely within the listening area, without needing to be aimed precisely at the listening position. Canton specifies a frequency response down to 22 Hz, a low value for a subwoofer in this category, made possible by the SC technology built into the 200-watt digital amplifier.
SC technology and bass performance optimization
Canton’s SC (Signal Control) technology is an active filtering circuit integrated into the amplifier. Its role is to compensate for the acoustic interactions between the driver and the enclosure volume, while blocking infrasonic signals that could cause excessive cone excursion. The result is lower distortion at high sound levels and a more linear frequency response.
The crossover frequency is adjustable between 50 and 200 Hz, allowing you to match it to the characteristics of the main speakers. The Smart Sub 12 operates in a sealed enclosure, a design that generally provides tighter, more accurate bass than a bass-reflex system, at the cost of slightly less extension in the very low end. Canton offsets this limitation with integrated electronic equalization.
Integration into the Canton Smart ecosystem
The main strength of the Smart Sub 12 lies in its wireless connection to other products in the Smart range: Smart Soundbar 10, Smart GLE, Smart Connect 5.1, or Smart Townus. Once paired, the subwoofer appears in the system and volume, phase, and channel level adjustments are made from the master product’s interface.
This approach greatly simplifies the installation of a home cinema or multiroom system: the subwoofer only needs a power outlet. For users with speakers from other brands or those who prefer a traditional wired connection, Canton provides analog inputs for standard integration.
Automatic power management (standby and wake-up based on signal presence) helps save energy without manual intervention.
Differences from the Smart Sub 8
The Smart Sub 8 uses a 220 mm (8-inch) woofer in a more compact format. Moving up to a 12-inch driver in the Smart Sub 12 increases air displacement capability, resulting in higher sound pressure and more authoritative extension in the deep bass. To accompany floorstanding speakers or cover a medium to large room, the Smart Sub 12 offers dynamic headroom that the 8-inch model cannot match.
Both models share the same Smart technology and the same amplifier power (200 watts), but their use cases differ: the Sub 8 is suited to a discreet installation or a small space, while the Sub 12 targets more ambitious setups.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can the Smart Sub 12 work with non-Canton speakers?
Yes. In addition to the wireless connection reserved for the Smart ecosystem, the subwoofer has wired analog inputs compatible with any preamplifier, AV receiver, or audio system with a subwoofer output. In this case, level and crossover settings are made directly on the subwoofer.
What room size can the Smart Sub 12 cover?
Canton does not specify a precise maximum room size, as bass perception depends on many factors: room volume, acoustic absorption, desired listening level. The 308 mm woofer and 200-watt amplifier can comfortably cover rooms of around 25 to 40 m² for music or movie listening at moderate to high levels.
Do I need a Canton Smart device to use the subwoofer?
To use the wireless connection, yes. The Smart Sub 12 communicates with products in the Smart range via a proprietary radio protocol. For a wired connection via the analog inputs, no additional Canton product is required.
How are phase and level adjusted?
In wireless mode, these parameters are adjusted from the master product’s interface (Smart Soundbar 10, Smart Connect 5.1, etc.). In wired mode, the subwoofer provides physical controls to adjust the crossover frequency; phase adjustment is done either via a switch on the subwoofer or from the source amplifier, depending on the model.
