Overview
The Power Sub 12 S2 retains the fundamentals of its predecessor while aligning both aesthetically and technically with the new GLE S2 speaker range from Canton. This evolution includes the adoption of ATB (Aluminium Titanium Black) cones and a magnetic oval grille that visually unifies the series.
Two cones working in tandem to extend the low end
The acoustic configuration is based on a bass-reflex principle assisted by a passive radiator. The 308 mm front-firing active driver works in tandem with a passive radiator of the same diameter mounted on the underside of the cabinet (downfire). This layout offers a concrete advantage: the passive cone absorbs part of the excursion work, which reduces the strain on the main driver and allows it to reach lower frequencies without increasing distortion. Canton claims a response extending down to 20 Hz.
Both cones use the same black aluminium-titanium composite material (ATB), developed for the GLE S2 series. The multi-fold wave surround allows for substantial cone excursion, a key parameter for reproducing deep bass at high sound levels without the driver reaching its mechanical limits.
Amplification and electronic protection
The built-in class D amplifier delivers 200 W continuous and 380 W peak power. SC (Soft Clipping) technology, a Canton staple for several years, intervenes upstream of the power stage to gradually clip the signal before it can cause audible distortion. The subwoofer can handle intense dynamic passages without clipping or damage, a valuable safeguard during high-impact movie scenes or electronic music tracks.
Adapting to room acoustics
The rear panel offers three essential controls: volume, crossover frequency (adjustable from 50 to 200 Hz), and phase. A three-position Room Compensation switch lets you adapt the frequency response according to the subwoofer’s placement in the room. In the “Normal” position, the curve remains balanced. The “Wide” position boosts the lowest frequencies, useful if the subwoofer is placed away from walls or in a large room where the bass lacks reinforcement. This function partially compensates for installation constraints without requiring complex acoustic measurements.
The inputs accept both line-level signals (RCA) and high-level signals via screw terminals for speaker cable. This dual connectivity makes it easy to integrate into stereo systems without a dedicated subwoofer output.
Size and finishes
The subwoofer measures 36 cm wide, 47.5 cm high, and 50 cm deep: a classic cubic format, but its depth means you need to plan an appropriate space. Height-adjustable feet allow you to fine-tune stability and optimize contact with the floor. The fabric grille, fixed by magnets, features a rounded oval frame that echoes the visual language of the GLE S2 speakers. It can be removed easily if you prefer to leave the cone visible. Two décor finishes are available: black or white.
Integration into an audio system
The Power Sub 12 S2 is designed to work with speakers from the GLE S2 series, but its standard connectivity allows it to complement any stereo or home cinema system. In a 2.1 configuration, it handles low frequencies and relieves the main speakers. In multichannel setups, it delivers the LFE (Low Frequency Effects) channel of soundtracks. The crossover frequency control lets you match the subwoofer’s low end to that of the satellite speakers without gaps or excessive overlap in the spectrum.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between the Power Sub 12 S2 and the original Power Sub 12?
The S2 adopts ATB (Aluminium Titanium Black) cones developed for the GLE S2 series, replacing the titanium cones of the previous version. The exterior design has also evolved with an oval grille matching the GLE S2 speakers. Power and volume specs remain identical.
Can the subwoofer be connected to a stereo amplifier without a subwoofer output?
Yes. The high-level inputs (screw terminals) allow the subwoofer to be connected directly to the amplifier’s speaker outputs, in parallel with the main speakers. The built-in low-pass filter isolates the bass.
What do the three positions on the Room Compensation switch correspond to?
The “Normal” position suits most setups. “Wide” boosts the lowest frequencies to compensate for free-field placement or a very large room. A third position attenuates the bass if the subwoofer is placed in a corner or against a wall, where low frequencies tend to accumulate.
Does the Power Sub 12 S2 work wirelessly?
No. This model requires a wired connection (RCA or speaker cable). Canton offers other subwoofers with wireless connectivity in its Smart range.
Are the feet supplied and adjustable?
Yes. The subwoofer comes with height-adjustable feet that provide stability and allow you to slightly adjust the angle of the passive radiator in relation to the floor.
Can two Power Sub 12 S2 units be used in the same system?
Yes. Adding a second subwoofer can even out bass distribution in a large room or compensate for room modes. Each subwoofer retains its own volume, phase, and crossover settings.
What minimum distance should be allowed behind the subwoofer?
Since the passive radiator is downward-firing rather than rear-firing, the subwoofer does not require special clearance behind it. A few centimetres are enough for ventilation of the connector panel.
