Overview
Townus series flagship floorstanding speaker, the 90 adopts several technologies developed by Canton for its more expensive Vento range. The German manufacturer, based in the Taunus region of Hesse, created this series name by merging “Town” and “Taunus” as a way to link modern urban life to its rural roots. The result: a 105 cm three-way floorstander combining four drivers in a slim cabinet with rounded corners.
Titanium and ceramic drivers: technology transfer
Each Townus 90 incorporates four drivers. The two woofers and the 174 mm midrange use titanium cones, a material that offers high rigidity with low mass. The woofers benefit from the Double Cone structure, a dual-cone diaphragm that limits distortion, while their sinusoidal Wave Surround suspensions allow for long excursions without loss of control.
The 25 mm tweeter is a ceramic dome made from aluminum oxide, capable of reaching up to 40,000 Hz thanks to a waveguide designed to optimize dispersion. This titanium–ceramic combination comes directly from the work carried out on the Vento series, usually reserved for a higher price segment.
Down-firing bass-reflex system
Canton has opted for a down-firing bass-reflex design, with the port located under the cabinet and directed towards the floor. This configuration offers a practical advantage: the acoustic excitation of the room is more even than with a rear or front-firing port, which reduces the risk of unwanted rumbling when the speaker is placed close to a wall. The wooden plinth, resting on four metal feet, provides the necessary clearance between the port and the floor.
The speaker incorporates DC (Displacement Control) technology, a high-pass filter patented by Canton. Its role is to prevent the woofer cones from reacting to infrasonic frequencies, which are inaudible but cause distortion. By eliminating these unnecessary excursions, DC technology delivers cleaner, more defined bass, even at high volume.
Cabinet construction and finish
The high-density MDF cabinet features several internal braces and carefully targeted damping. The internal wiring and crossover components are meticulously selected, a point Canton emphasizes in its communications. Each speaker weighs 24 kg, an indication of its structural solidity.
Three finishes are available: high-gloss black, satin-matte white, and walnut veneer. The cabinet’s rounded edges are not just aesthetic; they also improve sound dispersion by reducing diffraction. The drivers are integrated into the baffle with no visible screws, framed by aluminum rings machined using the Seamless Diamond Cut process. A magnetically attached acoustic fabric grille can conceal the drivers for a more discreet look.
Connectivity and acoustic adjustments
The terminal block supports bi-wiring and bi-amping. The gold-plated connectors accept banana plugs or bare wire up to a generous cross-section. Canton has also provided a level control and room-acoustic adjustment options, offering welcome flexibility to tailor the sound to real-world listening conditions.
A neutral and demanding sonic signature
The Townus 90 features a frequency response of 20 Hz to 40,000 Hz and an impedance of 4 to 8 ohms. It handles 150 W nominal power and musical peaks of 300 W. These characteristics make it a speaker that benefits from a quality amplifier—not necessarily the most powerful, but one capable of delivering stable current.
Canton has voiced this speaker for linear reproduction. The bass is not artificially boosted: it appears when it’s present in the recording and stays understated otherwise. This choice has a side effect: poor productions are not flattered. The Townus 90 reproduces voices with precision and stable imaging, a strong asset for acoustic recordings and film soundtracks.
Integration into a multichannel system
The Townus series includes the Townus 30 bookshelf speaker, the Townus 50 center speaker, and the Townus Sub 12 subwoofer equipped with a 300 mm titanium driver. The range shares consistent tonal balance, making it easy to build a 5.1 home cinema system. Canton also offers the Smart Amp 5.1, a compact wireless amplification and streaming module capable of replacing a traditional AV amplifier.

Frequently Asked Questions
What type of amplifier is suitable for this speaker?
With impedance dropping to 4 ohms and moderate efficiency, the Townus 90 requires an amplifier capable of delivering current without strain. A quality integrated amp between 50 and 150 W per channel is suitable, provided it is stable with low-impedance loads. Canton notes good synergy with amplifiers that have a balanced rather than analytical sound.
What is the difference between the Townus 90 and the Vento 90?
The two speakers share several technologies, including the Wave Surround suspensions and DC technology. The Vento 90 uses titanium–graphite cones (an evolution of standard titanium) and a larger cabinet with 192 mm woofers. It weighs around 30 kg versus 24 kg for the Townus 90 and offers slightly deeper bass extension.
Are decoupling spikes included?
No, but the plinth is prepped to accommodate them. Spikes can improve mechanical decoupling on certain floors, particularly floating wood floors. On thick carpet, they also help stabilize the speaker and preserve bass clarity.
Does the Townus 90 support passive bi-amping?
Yes, the dual-pair binding posts allow it. In a bi-amping configuration, one amplifier powers the woofers while a second amplifier drives the midrange and tweeter. This setup can improve separation and dynamics, provided the amplifiers have compatible sonic characteristics.
