Canton Townus 90 walnut (pack of 2)

Townus series flagship floorstanding speaker, the 90 adopts several technologies developed by Canton for its more expensive Vento range. The German manufacturer, based in the Taunus region of Hesse, created this series name by blending “Town” and “Taunus,” a way of linking modern urban life to its rural roots. The result: a 3-way, 105 cm tall floorstander that combines four drivers in a slim cabinet with rounded edges.

Titanium and ceramic drivers: technology transfer

Each Townus 90 houses four drivers. The two woofers and the 174 mm midrange use titanium diaphragms, a material that offers high rigidity for low mass. The woofers benefit from the Double Cone structure, a dual-cone diaphragm that limits distortion, while their sinusoidal Wave Surround suspensions allow for large excursions without loss of control.

The 25 mm tweeter is an aluminium oxide ceramic dome capable of extending up to 40,000 Hz thanks to a waveguide designed to optimize dispersion. This titanium–ceramic combination comes directly from the work carried out on the Vento series, usually reserved for a higher price segment.

Down-firing bass-reflex system

Canton has opted for a down-firing bass-reflex port, positioned underneath the cabinet and directed towards the floor. This layout offers a practical advantage: the acoustic excitation of the room is more uniform than with a rear or front port, reducing the risk of unwanted boom caused by proximity to a wall. The wooden plinth, resting on four metal feet, provides the necessary clearance between the port and the floor.

The speaker incorporates DC (Displacement Control) technology, a high-pass filter patented by Canton. Its role is to prevent the woofer diaphragms from reacting to infrasonic frequencies, which are inaudible but a source of distortion. By eliminating these unnecessary excursions, DC technology delivers cleaner, better-defined bass, even at high volume.

Cabinet construction and finish

The high-density MDF cabinet features multiple internal braces and targeted damping. The internal wiring and crossover components are carefully selected, a point Canton emphasizes in its communications. Each speaker weighs 24 kg, a sign of structural solidity.

Three finishes are available: high-gloss black, satin-matte white, and walnut veneer. The cabinet’s rounded edges are not just aesthetic; they also improve sound dispersion by reducing diffraction. The drivers are integrated into the baffle with no visible screws, surrounded by aluminium rings machined using the Seamless Diamond Cut process. A magnetically attached acoustic fabric grille can conceal the drivers if a more understated look is preferred.

Connectivity and acoustic tuning

The terminal allows for bi-wiring and bi-amping. Gold-plated connectors accept banana plugs or bare wire up to a comfortable gauge. Canton has also provided a level control and room-acoustic adjustment, a welcome flexibility for tailoring the sound to real-world listening conditions.

A neutral, demanding sound signature

The Townus 90 offers a frequency response from 20 Hz to 40,000 Hz and an impedance of 4 to 8 ohms. It handles 150 W nominal power and 300 W music peaks. These specifications make it a speaker that benefits from a quality amplifier—not necessarily the most powerful, but capable of delivering a stable current.

Canton has tuned this speaker for linear reproduction. The bass is not artificially boosted: it appears when it’s in the recording and stays unobtrusive otherwise. This choice has a side effect: poor productions are not flattered. The Townus 90 reproduces voices with precision and stable imaging, a strong point for acoustic recordings or film soundtracks.

Integration into a multichannel system

The Townus series includes the Townus 30 bookshelf speaker, the Townus 50 center speaker, and the Townus Sub 12 subwoofer equipped with a 300 mm titanium driver. The range shares consistent voicing, making it easy to build a 5.1 home cinema system. Canton also offers the Smart Amp 5.1, a compact wireless amplification and streaming module capable of replacing a traditional AV amplifier.
