EISA Awards: Award-Winning Product
Each year, dozens of European journalists gather to select the best electronic products of the year. Awarded by a diverse and impartial jury, the EISA (Expert Imaging and Sound Association) awards recognize exceptional products for their performance, design, or ergonomics.
Overview
When Andrew Jones joined MoFi Electronics after decades at KEF, TAD, Pioneer, and then ELAC, no one expected this brand — known for its turntables and phono preamps — to venture into loudspeaker design. The SourcePoint 10, his first model, quickly found its audience. The SourcePoint 8 carries forward the same principles in a format scaled down to 80%, with dedicated engineering work on the driver and the cabinetry.
A custom concentric driver
The principle of a concentric driver is simple to explain, difficult to execute: the tweeter is housed at the center of the woofer/midrange cone, so that both transducers radiate from the same point. The benefit is immediate: spatial coherence between frequency ranges no longer depends on the listener’s position, and the soundstage remains stable across a wider listening area than with a conventional separate-driver arrangement.
On the SourcePoint 8, the 20 cm (8-inch) cone is made from paper pulp, a lightweight and well-damped material. Its corrugated surround replaces the traditional half-roll rubber surround. This choice is significant: the corrugated surround takes up less surface area, which increases the active surface of the cone. As a result, this 8-inch driver offers excursion and radiating area close to those of the 10-inch driver in the SourcePoint 10. The trade-off is that bass extension stops at 47 Hz instead of 42 Hz — which remains entirely respectable for a speaker of this size.
The 3.2 cm (1.25-inch) soft-dome tweeter features a large-diameter voice coil and a wide surround, both unusual for a high-frequency transducer. The woofer/midrange cone acts as a waveguide: it channels the tweeter’s dispersion and improves its efficiency in the lower part of its operating range. The crossover frequency is set at 1.6 kHz, as on the SourcePoint 10, and the filter uses laminated steel-core inductors.
The Twin-Drive system with neodymium magnets
The magnetic motor is shared between the woofer/midrange and the tweeter. Two neodymium magnets, arranged in opposition, create a symmetrical magnetic field. Copper sleeves reduce nonlinear inductance variations. The advantage of this arrangement: the two motors reinforce each other, increasing flux density in both gaps. MoFi claims very low intermodulation distortion, and this is confirmed by independent measurements published to date. The sound gains in clarity, transients are better defined, and micro-details emerge without perceptible effort.
This is the same motor structure as in the SourcePoint 10: Jones was able to retain it without modification when moving to the 8-inch format, as the relationship between cone mass, surface area, and magnetic force remains correctly proportioned.
A baffle shaped to combat diffraction
The front baffle, 38 mm thick, is sculpted with multiple facets. This is not merely an aesthetic choice: the sharp edges of a flat baffle cause spurious reflections (diffraction) that color the sound and blur the stereo image. The facets break up these reflections and scatter them, reducing their audible effect. You hear more of the driver and less of the cabinet.
The cabinet itself is built from 19 mm MDF, reinforced by an internal bracing system. The panels are covered with book-matched natural wood veneer: the two speakers in a pair display mirror-image grain patterns. Two wood veneer finishes are available — satin walnut and satin black ash — along with a satin white lacquer version.
Listening and room placement
With a sensitivity of 87 dB and a nominal impedance of 8 ohms (minimum 6.4 ohms), the SourcePoint 8 presents no difficulty for amplification. An amplifier of 30 watts is sufficient to achieve a comfortable listening level; 25-watt models have produced convincing results in tests with this speaker. Both tube and solid-state amplifiers work well. Maximum power handling is 150 watts.
Placement deserves attention. MoFi recommends keeping at least 60 cm between the speaker and the rear wall to avoid excess bass caused by room reinforcement. The two rear-firing bass-reflex ports load the bass down to 47 Hz: in a moderately sized room, the natural acoustic gain can extend the response down to around 40 Hz. Andrew Jones advises positioning the speakers with no toe-in, aimed straight ahead. The concentric design makes the frequency response more consistent slightly off-axis than in strictly on-axis listening, where minor diffraction effects related to the concentric tweeter can appear.
The dimensions are worth noting: 290 × 456 × 335 mm with grille, and 12.7 kg per speaker. This is not a small bookshelf speaker. On a desk, the footprint will likely be excessive. On stands, in a room of 12 to 25 m², it comes into its own. MoFi offers dedicated 56 cm three-column steel stands, fillable, with interchangeable spikes and pads.
Sound reproduction and musical versatility
The tonal balance of the SourcePoint 8 is somewhat more neutral than that of the SourcePoint 10: the treble does not exhibit the slight prominence of the larger model. The frequency response extends to 30 kHz, but the extreme high frequencies remain understated. With slightly bright sources (magnetic tape, noisy electronics), this is more of an advantage; on the other hand, listeners who love the last shimmer of air in the treble may find this range a touch recessed.
The bass is firm, controlled, and tonally precise. The midrange stands out for its transparency: voices are reproduced with a natural quality and presence that are genuinely appreciable. The stereo image, supported by the coherence of the concentric driver, is wide and above all very precise in source placement. Soundstage depth is well rendered.
This speaker does not favor any musical genre at the expense of another. From acoustic jazz to distorted rock, from chamber music to electronic, it adapts without changing character. This is one of the merits of concentric design: coherence between frequency ranges does not deteriorate when the music becomes more complex.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does the SourcePoint 8 need a powerful amplifier?
No. Its 87 dB sensitivity and 8-ohm impedance make it easy to drive. An integrated amplifier of 30 watts will be sufficient in most situations, and 25-watt models have already delivered good results. Tube amplifiers are perfectly suitable.
Can it be used without dedicated stands, on a piece of furniture?
It is possible but not optimal. The SourcePoint 8 performs at its best on stands that place the tweeter at ear height in a seated position, around 56 cm. Any quality stand at that height will work — not exclusively the MoFi model.
What are the main differences from the SourcePoint 10?
The SourcePoint 8 is scaled to approximately 80% of the SourcePoint 10’s dimensions. Its 8-inch driver uses the same magnetic motor and the same tweeter, but with a smaller cone fitted with a specific corrugated surround. Bass extension is slightly reduced (47 Hz vs. 42 Hz), sensitivity is lower (87 dB vs. 91 dB), and the overall tonal balance is more neutral in the treble.
What room size is recommended?
The SourcePoint 8 works in rooms of approximately 10 to 25 m². In a larger space, adding a subwoofer can be considered to complement the lowest frequency range.
