Overview
Two additional years of development after the release of the original SourcePoint 10 in late 2022: that is the time Andrew Jones devoted to refining the crossover filter of this bookshelf speaker. The Master Edition retains the same 25 cm concentric driver and the same cabinet as the original model, but fundamentally rethinks the signal processing between the bass and treble. The result is a more precise speaker, better suited to its environment, and one that remains uncommonly easy to use in this price range.
A 25 cm concentric driver, and why that is rare
The most striking design choice of the SourcePoint 10 is its concentric driver: a 3.2 cm soft-dome tweeter housed at the center of a 25 cm paper pulp woofer. Both transducers emit from a single point, eliminating time offsets between bass and treble. The soundstage gains in coherence and the sweet spot widens, including vertically.
This type of two-way concentric arrangement is uncommon. Andrew Jones practiced it for a long time in three-way configurations at TAD and KEF, where a separate midrange driver handled the intermediate frequencies to limit the excursion of the central driver. At MoFi, he took the opposite approach: a single large transducer covers the bass and midrange, its 25 cm size allowing it to move the necessary air with minimal excursion. The paper cone also acts as a waveguide for the tweeter, which aligns the directivity of both transducers and improves tweeter efficiency in the lower part of its operating range.
The tweeter, with its wide-roll surround and large-diameter voice coil, can reach down to the crossover frequency of 1.6 kHz, a low crossover point that contributes to the smoothness of the transition between registers.
The Twin-Drive system: limiting distortion at the source
The driver’s magnetic motor is based on the Twin-Drive system developed by MoFi. Two high-energy neodymium magnets create a symmetrical magnetic field that eliminates flux modulation. The acoustic benefit is tangible: intermodulation distortion (IMD) drops to very low levels, meaning the driver generates little to no spurious frequencies absent from the original signal. Copper sleeves further reduce the non-linear inductance of the voice coil.
In practice, this translates into a clean, defined sound where instrumental timbres remain legible even during complex passages or at high volume.
The Master Edition crossover, the heart of the update
This is where the Master Edition sets itself apart from the original SourcePoint 10. The new crossover filter is mounted on two separate circuit boards and uses higher-quality components: polypropylene film capacitors, metal film resistors, and air-core inductors. The original filter used laminated steel-core inductors. Switching to air-core inductors reduces losses and core saturation, improving signal linearity and transparency.
MoFi states that these modifications allow for better integration between the woofer and tweeter, more precise phase alignment, and a lower noise floor. Impedance is also more linear than with the original filter, making the amplifier’s job easier.
A three-position selector (High, Mid, Low) is integrated into the filter to adjust the tweeter level by approximately ±1 dB. The Mid position corresponds to the neutral factory setting. High slightly boosts the treble in heavily damped rooms (thick carpet, curtains, upholstered furniture). Low attenuates it in reflective rooms (hard floors, bare walls, large bay windows). This adjustment is direct and lossless since it is an integral part of the filter circuit.
Owners of the original SourcePoint 10 can purchase the Master Edition filter as an upgrade kit installable with a simple screwdriver, which reflects a commendable approach on the part of the manufacturer.
A cabinet built for a 25 cm woofer
A driver of this size requires a substantial internal volume and a cabinet that does not vibrate. The top, bottom, and side panels are made of 25 mm thick MDF, clad in genuine book-matched wood veneer with a satin finish. The front baffle is made of 50 mm MDF, providing significant mass and rigidity at the precise point where the driver is mounted. Two internal braces connect the panels together to lock the structure.
The baffle is sculpted into several angled facets that reduce diffraction — the spurious reflections generated when a sound wave meets the edge of the baffle. On a conventional flat-baffle speaker, these diffractions color the reproduction and blur the stereo image. Here, the facets break up these reflections and allow the driver to radiate more evenly.
Two rear bass-reflex ports handle the woofer’s bass loading, with low-turbulence airflow. Foam tuning bungs are supplied to attenuate bass energy if the speaker must be placed close to a rear wall, within 60 cm. MoFi ideally recommends a clearance of at least 60 cm from both rear and side walls.
The speaker weighs 21 kg. At 57 cm tall and 37 cm wide, it is large for a bookshelf speaker and requires a sturdy stand. MoFi offers dedicated “Low Slung” stands that tilt the speaker slightly upward to direct the sound toward a seated listener.
An easy speaker to drive
With a sensitivity of 91 dB (2.83 V / 1 m), the SourcePoint 10 Master Edition draws a comfortable volume from any amplifier capable of delivering 30 watts or more. Its nominal impedance of 8 ohms (minimum 6.2 ohms) makes it a stable load that will not challenge a modest tube power amplifier. It works equally well with higher-powered transistor amplifiers, up to 200 W. This versatility broadens the range of possible pairings and allows the amplifier to be chosen on the basis of musicality rather than raw power.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between the SourcePoint 10 Master Edition and the original SourcePoint 10?
The driver and cabinet are identical. The difference lies in the crossover filter: the Master Edition uses higher-quality components (film capacitors, metal film resistors, air-core inductors) spread across two circuit boards, and adds a three-position tweeter level selector. Together, these improvements enhance integration between registers, impedance linearity, and the noise floor.
What type of amplifier is best suited?
The 91 dB sensitivity and 8-ohm impedance make this speaker compatible with a wide range of amplifiers. A 30 W tube amplifier is sufficient for comfortable listening levels in a medium-sized room. A more powerful transistor amplifier will provide greater dynamic headroom in a large space or at high volume levels.
Are stands or a support strictly necessary?
Yes. The speaker stands 57 cm tall and weighs 21 kg: it requires a stable support. MoFi offers “Low Slung” stands that position the speaker at an optimal height with a slight upward tilt. Quality universal stands are also suitable, provided they can support the weight and dimensions.
How far from the walls should the speakers be placed?
MoFi recommends at least 60 cm from rear and side walls for balanced bass. If the room requires placement closer to the wall, the supplied foam bungs can reduce the bass energy transmitted through the rear ports, at the cost of a slight loss of extension in the lower end of the spectrum.
Does the speaker go low enough to do without a subwoofer?
The stated frequency response begins at 42 Hz, which covers the majority of musical content. In a medium-sized room with free placement, the acoustic reinforcement from the walls can extend the response to around 40 Hz. For orchestral music at very high dynamic levels or for home cinema, a subwoofer will provide a useful complement below 40 Hz.
