Three 20 cm speakers, a concentric driver derived from the SourcePoint 8, a 43 kg cabinet per speaker: the SourcePoint 888 is the first floorstanding speaker in MoFi Electronics’ SourcePoint range. Designed by Andrew Jones, an engineer who has worked at KEF, Pioneer, TAD, and ELAC, it takes the point-source principle of the SourcePoint 8 and 10 (compact standmount speakers) and applies it to a three-way floorstanding format capable of reaching down to 32 Hz.

A concentric driver freed from bass duties

At the heart of the SourcePoint 888 is a 20 cm concentric transducer: a 32 mm soft-dome tweeter (28 mm copper voice coil) is housed at the center of a paper-pulp midrange cone. The assembly uses a dual neodymium magnet system (“Twin Drive”) to reduce distortion. The midrange and treble come from the same physical point, ensuring time coherence and a stable stereo image regardless of listening angle.

On the SourcePoint 8, this transducer also had to reproduce the lower end of the spectrum. Here, the 130 Hz crossover frees it from that task. The midrange cone operates over a narrower band (130 Hz to 1.6 kHz), which reduces its excursion and improves transparency in the vocal and instrumental range.

Two 20 cm woofers with opposed magnets

Below the concentric driver, two 20 cm paper-cone woofers handle the entire bass range. Their design follows a principle Jones had used at TAD at much higher price points: a short voice coil in a long gap, powered by two oppositely arranged neodymium magnets. The magnetic field remains uniform throughout the cone’s travel, promoting linear excursion control.

The pleated surrounds (rather than the usual rolled surrounds) contribute to power handling. With two rear ports, the bass-reflex tuning provides a claimed extension down to 32 Hz. In practice, the energy in the deep bass is generous, to the point of making a subwoofer unnecessary in most setups. That is also the downside: in a modest-sized room or one with poor acoustic treatment, the bass can become overwhelming. MoFi recommends at least 60 cm of clearance from the walls, and at minimum a medium-sized room, preferably a large one.

A cabinet designed for rigidity

Each speaker weighs 43 kg. This weight is explained by the thick MDF construction, reinforced with multiple internal braces. The cabinet is divided into three isolated chambers, one per driver, which limits mechanical interaction between the transducers and reduces unwanted resonances.

The front baffle adopts a multi-faceted profile (somewhat like the facets of a diamond) that breaks up parallel surfaces and reduces diffraction. This aesthetic choice has a direct acoustic function: reflections on the front panel are attenuated, which contributes to the cleanliness of the sound image. The front baffle is about 32 cm wide, and the cabinet narrows slightly toward the rear, again to limit internal standing waves.

Screw-on feet are supplied in two versions: spikes for carpet, flat pads for hard floors. Two pairs of binding posts allow bi-amping or bi-wiring, with a 130 Hz split between the bass section and the mid/treble sections.

Finishes and magnetic grilles

Three finishes are available. Satin walnut and satin black ash use “bookmatched” solid wood veneer: the two speakers in a pair feature mirrored, symmetrical grain patterns. The third finish, satin white, is exclusive to the SourcePoint 888. In all three cases, the front baffle remains satin black.

The fabric grilles attach magnetically and follow the multi-faceted profile of the front baffle. MoFi recommends removing them for critical listening, but their presence does not drastically alter the sound.

Sound character and amplification

The SourcePoint 888 offers a warm tonal balance, with a slightly elevated mid-bass that brings body to voices and density to instruments. The treble, smooth and extended (up to 30 kHz), avoids any aggressiveness. This character makes it forgiving with older or average-quality recordings, which often sound better than expected.

The trade-off for this smoothness: on very well-recorded material, more analytical speakers may reveal more micro-detail. This is a design choice deliberately made by Andrew Jones, who favors long-term listening pleasure over surgical transparency.

With a sensitivity of 87 dB and a nominal impedance of 6 ohms (minimum 4.5 ohms), the SourcePoint 888 is not a difficult load. An integrated amplifier delivering 50 to 70 watts per channel may be enough, although additional power reserve (maximum admissible power is 200 W) allows full use of its dynamics on orchestral passages or fast transients.

Placement and setup

Its size and bass energy impose a few constraints. The speakers need space: at least 60 cm behind them, ideally one meter, so the rear ports can function properly and the bass does not build up against the wall. Placement in an equilateral triangle with the listening position, with the speakers slightly angled toward the listener, gets the best out of the concentric transducer.

In a room smaller than 20 m², excess energy below 50 Hz may excite the room’s modes. Foam plugs in the lower ports can help tame this behavior, a simple trick that does not compromise the rest of the spectrum. A digital room correction system below 300 Hz is an option worth considering if the listening room has pronounced resonances.
