Five 25.4 cm drivers per speaker, a 72.5 kg cabinet, and a frequency response that extends down to 27 Hz: the SourcePoint V10 Master Edition is the most ambitious floorstanding speaker ever produced by MoFi Electronics. Designed by Andrew Jones, it takes the concentric driver from the SourcePoint 10 (bookshelf model) and installs it in a 3-way passive-radiator system, with two dedicated woofers to relieve the midrange of any effort in the lower part of the spectrum.

Where the SourcePoint 888 left off

The SourcePoint range was built step by step: first the SourcePoint 8 and SourcePoint 10 bookshelf speakers, then the SourcePoint 888 floorstander, which added two 20 cm woofers to the SourcePoint 8’s concentric driver. The V10 applies the same logic to the 25.4 cm concentric driver from the SourcePoint 10, but on a completely different scale. The woofers are also 25.4 cm, and the 888’s bass-reflex ports give way to two passive radiators of the same diameter.

Why this choice? Andrew Jones explained it simply: with the combined surface area of the two 25.4 cm woofers, conventional ports were no longer viable. Passive radiators meet the same need (acoustically loading the woofers in the cabinet) without the air turbulence or chuffing that a port can generate at high levels. Here, they reach down to a tuning frequency of around 23 Hz, which explains the stated usable response down to 27 Hz.

A 25.4 cm concentric driver freed from low frequencies

At the heart of the V10 is the concentric driver developed by Jones: a 25.4 cm paper cone with a 3.2 cm soft-dome tweeter mounted at its center. The midrange cone acts as a waveguide for the tweeter, allowing both transducers to radiate from the same point. The benefit is tangible: coherence between midrange and treble no longer depends on the listening position, and the stereo image remains stable even off-axis.

On the SourcePoint 10 bookshelf speakers, this concentric driver also had to reproduce bass. The cone excursion at low frequencies would then modulate the response of the tweeter placed at its center, which limited listening level before distortion appeared. In the V10, the crossover frequency between bass and midrange is set at 130 Hz: the concentric driver works only in the midrange and treble, with reduced excursion. Modulation distortion drops, and the tweeter operates under far more favorable conditions.

This is also an approach Andrew Jones had already adopted in his 3-way concentric designs at TAD. The two-way SourcePoint 10 models were, by his own admission, a compromise dictated by the bookshelf format.

A three-position Master Edition crossover

The V10 inherits the upgraded “Master Edition” crossover, already found in the latest evolutions of the SourcePoint 10. Components are selected one by one: polypropylene film capacitors, metal-film resistors, air-core inductors. The network is split across two separate printed circuit boards.

A three-position switch, accessible on the back of the speaker, allows the tweeter level to be adjusted by about +1 dB, 0 dB (neutral), or -1 dB. The adjustment is modest but sufficient to compensate for a heavily damped room (high position) or, conversely, a reflective environment (low position). Jones also indicated that the V10 benefits from being slightly toed out, by around 10 to 15 degrees, to smooth the treble response, as is often the case with concentric drivers.

The speaker features dual binding posts for bi-amping or bi-wiring, allowing the bass range (below 130 Hz) and the midrange-treble range to be driven separately.

A substantial cabinet designed for rigidity

At 124 cm tall, 39.4 cm wide, and 50.5 cm deep, the V10 does not aim for discretion. Each speaker weighs 72.5 kg, placing it in the heavy floorstanding category even at this market level. The panels are made of 25 mm-thick MDF, while the front baffle reaches 50 mm. Internal bracing links the walls and contributes to compartmentalization: each woofer/passive radiator pair is housed in its own acoustic chamber, isolated from the volume of the concentric driver.

The baffle adopts the sculpted shape characteristic of the SourcePoint range, with angled facets around each driver. These facets are not decorative: they function as an extension of the waveguide and reduce edge diffraction that, on a conventional flat baffle, colors the off-axis response. MoFi recommends listening without the grilles (attached by magnets) for this reason: their frame slightly interferes with the baffle’s work.

Sensitivity and amplification

With a sensitivity of 91 dB (2.83 V / 1 m) and a nominal impedance of 6 ohms (minimum 4.5 ohms), the V10 is not very demanding in terms of power. Andrew Jones stated that he tested it with 10 W Class A tube amplifiers as well as 200 W push-pull blocks, with good results in both cases thanks to a smooth impedance curve. An amplifier capable of operating into 4 ohms is recommended to get the most out of the speaker without strain.

In practice, the V10 does not need to be pushed hard to deliver a strong sense of dynamics. The combined surface area of its five 25.4 cm drivers moves enough air for the sound to remain lively and contrasted at moderate volume. At high levels, the speaker remains controlled and does not compress.

Setup: a few constraints to plan for

The V10 requires space. MoFi recommends between 60 cm and 120 cm of distance from the rear and side walls. The passive radiators, mounted on the back, need clearance to operate properly, and placement too close to a wall will amplify the low end in an uncontrolled way.

The speaker comes with two sets of interchangeable feet: spikes for carpet and flat pads for hard floors. Given the weight (72.5 kg per speaker), setup requires two people and a minimum of planning. This format is not suited to small listening rooms, nor to spaces where placement distance is limited.
