R_volution Chassis DIY-X700 + UBP-X700 multi-regions
Overview
The Sony UBP-X700, released in 2018, remains one of the few 4K Blu-ray players on the market to support Dolby Vision at an affordable price. Its switching power supply, however, limits the potential of the audio and video signal. R_volution’s DIY-X700 multi-region Chassis addresses both frustrations at once: an audiophile-grade linear power supply and the removal of all region locking, for both Blu-ray and DVD.
A chassis, not a player
The DIY-X700 is not a standalone Blu-ray player. It is a metal enclosure into which the motherboard and optical drive of the Sony UBP-X700 are transplanted. The Sony electronics remain intact: same interface, same menus, same 4K Ultra HD, Dolby Vision, and HDR10 playback features. What changes is everything around it.
The chassis is larger than the original plastic enclosure (43 × 28.23 × 7.17 cm, weighing 5 kg). It rests on wide feet suited to a hi-fi cabinet, and rack ears are included for integration into a technical rack. A dedicated grounding terminal completes the setup to eliminate ground loops in complex installations.
Linear power supply and carefully selected components
The original Sony switching power supply generates high-frequency noise and jitter, two phenomena that affect the stability of digital audio and video signals. R_volution replaces it with a linear power supply built around an 81 W toroidal transformer in OFC (oxygen-free) copper, paired with a Toshiba voltage regulator and a Lintec LDO (low-dropout) regulator.
On the power supply board, the capacitors have been selected from Japanese manufacturers well known in the audio field: Nichicon and Nippon Chemi-Con for the audio circuits, WIMA for the video circuits. The goal is simple: to provide cleaner, more stable current to the Sony player’s printed circuit board.
According to R_volution, the gains result in deeper blacks, more faithful color reproduction, better rendering of film grain, and a more precise multichannel audio signal. These improvements still depend on the rest of the system: amplifier, speakers, cabling, display. On an already refined setup, the difference will be more noticeable than on an entry-level system.
Borderless playback
The multi-region version removes the Sony player’s geographical restrictions. Blu-rays from regions A (Americas, Southeast Asia), B (Europe, Africa, Oceania), and C (East Asia, Russia) are all supported, as are DVDs from regions 0 to 8.
In practical terms, this opens access to U.S. editions (often the first available), Japanese imports (regularly enhanced with exclusive bonus features), and European catalogs, all on a single device. Region selection is done via the remote control, seamlessly.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does the DIY-X700 kit modify the video or audio decoding capabilities of the Sony UBP-X700?
No. The Sony motherboard remains unchanged. Dolby Vision, HDR10, Dolby Atmos, and DTS:X work just as they do on the original player. The improvement concerns the quality of the power supply, which affects the cleanliness of the transmitted signal, not the supported formats.
Do I need to own a Sony UBP-X700 to use the kit?
Yes, for the DIY kit-only version. You must provide your own UBP-X700 and extract its components. The pre-assembled version includes the Sony player: you receive a ready-to-use device.
Is the multi-region modification reversible?
The Sony components can be reinstalled in their original enclosure. The multi-region modification depends on the firmware version applied during assembly. Contact R_volution for details specific to each configuration.
Do the Sony streaming apps still work?
Yes. The software interface is not modified. The apps installed on the player remain accessible, as do the Wi-Fi and Ethernet connections.
