The Super HeavyWeight Champion extends MoFi Electronics’ range of record weights upward, with a 35% increase in mass compared to the original Super HeavyWeight, and a reformulated internal absorption material. It targets heavy-platter turntables, where a lighter weight is no longer sufficient to properly couple the record.

A record weight that absorbs noise, not just mass

Most record weights simply press the vinyl against the platter using their own weight. The Super HeavyWeight Champion goes further: it functions as a noise dissipator. Its eight internal chambers, filled with an ultra-dense polymer developed with Harmonic Resolution Systems (HRS), absorb parasitic vibrations generated by the groove, the motor, and the turntable’s bearing. Mechanical noise is drained away before it reaches the stylus, lowering the noise floor during playback.

Mike Latvis, chief engineer at HRS, has dedicated his career to vibration control — first in aerospace and defense (helicopter rotor isolation, anti-missile systems), then in high-end audio since founding HRS in 1999. The polymer used in the Super HeavyWeight Champion is the result of a long-standing collaboration between Latvis and a polymer chemist, with dozens of formulations tested and hundreds of listening sessions before final approval.

Construction and finish

The outer shell is machined from a block of 6061 aluminum (billet machining), an alloy commonly used in aeronautics for its rigidity and relative lightness. The surface provides a comfortable grip. The top cap features a black anodized finish and a laser-engraved MoFi logo.

The bottom face, which comes into contact with the record label, is coated with a soft polymer to prevent any marks or damage. No threading required: the weight is placed and removed by hand, with no screws or adapters. Precision transfer molding ensures perfect balance, eliminating any risk of warping or eccentricity once in place.

495 grams: which turntables is it for?

At 495.1 g, the Super HeavyWeight Champion weighs approximately 128 g more than the standard Super HeavyWeight (367.4 g). This additional mass only makes sense on turntables whose platter weighs at least 2.3 kg (approximately 5 pounds). On a lighter platter, an overly heavy weight could place excessive strain on the motor, bearing, or suspension, and sonic performance could actually deteriorate.

Direct-drive or belt-drive turntables fitted with heavy platters (solid aluminum, thick acrylic, or multi-layer combinations) will get the most out of this weight. If your platter weighs less than 2 kg, the lighter original Super HeavyWeight remains the logical choice.

What changes in listening

The effect of proper record-to-platter coupling combined with effective vibration absorption manifests in several ways. The sonic background becomes quieter: micro-details buried in the groove emerge more clearly, separation between instruments gains in definition, and the bass tightens up. The stereo image tends to stabilize, with improved source localization within the soundstage.

It is worth staying clear-eyed: a record weight does not affect the quality of the cartridge, tonearm, or phono stage. Its action concerns mechanical coupling and the reduction of structural noise. On a well-designed turntable already equipped with a heavy platter, the improvement may be subtle but perceptible. On a turntable whose platter vibrates or resonates, the improvement will be more pronounced.

Compared to the original Super HeavyWeight

The Super HeavyWeight Champion is not a replacement for the original model. Both weights coexist in the MoFi lineup. The Super HeavyWeight (367.4 g) remains the versatile model, compatible with all turntables without restriction. The Champion, heavier and featuring a reformulated eight-chamber polymer, targets a more limited category of massive-platter turntables, where its additional mass produces firmer coupling and greater absorption.

The external dimensions are identical, and both models share the same machined 6061 aluminum shell, the same protective bottom surface, and the same threadless design.
