Canton Vento 31 walnut (pack of 2)

Seventh generation of the Vento line, the Vento 31 is the larger of the two bookshelf speakers in the 2026 series. Canton designed it and hand-built it in its Weilrod factory in Hesse, incorporating several technologies from its Reference series, including the BC black ceramic tweeter and ATB diaphragms. The cabinet has been completely redesigned compared with the Vento 30, with a more generous internal volume and shaping that brings this compact speaker closer to floorstanding territory in terms of bass foundation.

A cabinet redesigned from top to bottom

The most visible change compared with the Vento 30 concerns the cabinet proportions. The Vento 31 gains 4 cm in height (40 cm versus 36) and 4 cm in depth (35 cm versus 31), while losing one centimeter in width (22 cm versus 23). This increased internal volume, combined with a weight increase from 8.7 to 10 kg, reflects significant structural reinforcement. The cabinet is built from curved multilayer MDF, with curved side panels and a front baffle with rounded edges that reduce acoustic diffraction. A system of internal chambers decouples the drivers from one another, and targeted damping controls parasitic reflections inside the speaker.

The finish has evolved: white changes from a glossy lacquer (High Gloss) to a matte satin (White Satin), while black remains in glossy lacquer. Two additional finishes are offered: Walnut, a walnut veneer already present on the Reference series, and Sand, an exclusive shade shared only with the Vento 91 and Vento 101. The protective grilles in acoustically neutral fabric attach magnetically, and the drivers are mounted on the baffle with no visible screws.

The Transmission Front Plate and the BC tweeter

The most distinctive design element of the Vento 2026 series is the Transmission Front Plate. It is a square-shaped waveguide, developed under the direction of designer Jannik Franzen, which frames the tweeter’s round dome. Canton says it drew inspiration from watch design for this part (the shape recalls the square case of certain sports watches). Beyond aesthetics, this waveguide controls high-frequency dispersion more evenly than a simple circular horn, improving stereo image stability across a wider listening area.

The tweeter itself is a 25 mm black ceramic dome (BC technology, for Black Ceramic), derived from the one used in the Reference series. The blackened aluminum oxide ceramic combines high rigidity and internal damping, two properties that allow the dome to operate like a piston across its entire useful range, up to 40 kHz. This is a clear step up from the standard ceramic tweeter of the Vento 30.

ATB diaphragm and Wave Surround suspension

The 174 mm woofer/midrange driver uses an ATB (Aluminium Titanium Black) diaphragm. This composite material is an evolution of the titanium-graphite diaphragms from the previous generation: the surface is treated with a chemical process that increases rigidity while reducing mass and improving damping. Canton claims that partial vibrations, which color the sound in the transition zone between midrange and treble, are eliminated across the entire useful range and the crossover region (the crossover is set at 3000 Hz).

The driver’s suspension uses Wave Surround technology, a multi-fold surround that allows large excursions while maintaining precise control of cone movement. This design contributes to the speaker’s ability to reach low frequencies (27 Hz claimed) despite its compact format, and it improves power handling (150 W peak music power, 80 W continuous).

Backfire bass-reflex loading

The Vento 31 uses a rear-firing bass-reflex port (a configuration Canton calls Backfire). This choice has practical implications for placement: the speaker needs a minimum amount of space between its rear panel and the wall for the port to work properly. Canton indicates that the loading has been optimized to facilitate integration near a wall, but a distance of 15 to 30 cm is still desirable for optimal bass performance. On dedicated stands out in the room, the Vento 31 will deliver its best in terms of stereo imaging and low-frequency response.

Sensitivity and amplification

With a sensitivity of 84.1 dB (1 W / 1 m), the Vento 31 is not an easy speaker to drive. A nominal impedance between 4 and 8 ohms confirms that the amplifier will need to supply current, particularly at frequencies where the impedance drops toward its minimum value. An integrated amplifier or power amplifier capable of delivering at least 50 to 80 W into 4 ohms with a stable power supply will be necessary to properly exploit this speaker’s dynamics. Small tube amplifiers or entry-level AV receivers may run out of steam on demanding passages.

The terminal is single-wiring with gold-plated binding posts, compatible with banana plugs, spades, or bare wire. Canton did not retain bi-wiring on this compact model.

Integration into a multichannel system

The Vento 31 is part of a complete family of nine models. It can serve as a front, surround, or rear speaker in a home theater system, in combination with the Vento 51 center speaker (3-way), the Vento Sub 1 subwoofer, and the Vento AR-1 Dolby Atmos modules. Canton has ensured consistency of sonic signature across all models in the series, making integration within a multichannel system easier without tonal mismatch between channels.

Compatible stands and placement

Two stands are compatible: the Vento LS stand and the LS 860. On a shelf, the Vento 31 will work, but the proximity of the rear wall and reflections from surrounding surfaces will affect bass behavior and stereo image precision. Placement on dedicated stands, in free space, remains the reference configuration for this type of speaker.
